The VC was introduced on 29 January 1856 by Queen Victoria to honour acts of valour during the Crimean War. Since then, the medal has been awarded 1,358 times to 1,355 individual recipients. Only 15 medals, 11 to members of the British Army, and four to the Australian Army, have been awarded since the Second World War. The traditional explanation of the source of the metal from which the medals are struck is that it derives from Russian cannon captured at the Siege of Sevastopol. Some research suggested a variety of origins for the material actually making up the medals themselves. Research has established that the metal for the medals came from two Chinese cannons that were captured from the Russians in 1855.

Corporal Bryan Budd & the Siege of Sangin | Victoria Cross | August 2006
In April 2006, the 16th Air Assault Brigade, centred around the 3rd Battalion, the Parachute Regiment, deployed to Helmand, Afghanistan. Two months later, despite already being overstretched, the 3rd Battalion committed troops to the town of Sangin to prevent the enemy seizing it. Over the next few months, Sangin became the focus of some of the most intense fighting of the deployment, including on the 20 August 2006 when 1st Platoon, A Company, 3 PARA, was ambushed whilst on patrol to the North of town. It was during this action that Corporal Bryan Budd, a Section Commander, led an attack on, and singlehandedly cleared, an enemy dug-out.

The Queen and Prince Philip hold a reception to honour recipients of the Victoria Cross and George Cross and their families
Queen Elizabeth and the Duke of Edinburgh have hosted a reception in Buckingham Palace to honour 23 recipients of the Victoria Cross and George Cross and their families.
The Victoria Cross is the highest British military decoration awarded "for most conspicuous bravery or some daring pre-eminent act of valour or self-sacrifice or extreme devotion to duty in the presence of the enemy".
Introduced by Queen Victoria in 1856, it is awarded irrespective of rank to those serving in British and Commonwealth forces.
The George Cross, the second highest British military award, was introduced by King George VI in September 1940, during the height of the Blitz.
It is granted in recognition of "acts of the greatest heroism or of the most conspicuous courage in circumstances of extreme danger" and can be awarded posthumously and to civilians.
The Queen has been patron of the Victoria Cross and George Cross Association since 1957.
During the reception Prince Philip was pictured wearing hearing aids for the first time.

This video is dedicated to the memory of Corporal Bryan Budd and the men of the 3rd Battalion, the Parachute Regiment, who lost their lives in the defence of Sangin.

Lance Corporal Joshua Leakey, bottom left, is the first living British soldier to be awarded the VC, the highest military decoration for valour, in ten years and only the second since 1969. Three times he sprinted across an open field in a hail of Taliban bullets in Afghanistan to save an injured U.S. marine and grab a machine gun to fire on the enemy, turning a crucial battle in 2013. In an extraordinary moment at the ceremony where he received his VC yesterday, General Sir Nick Carter, the head of the Army, congratulated him with a handshake only to pull him in for an emotional hug. The 27-year-old also became the second person in his family to be awarded the medal – his second cousin Sergeant Nigel Gray Leakey, bottom right, was given the honour 70 years ago during the Second World War.
