The bridge is named for the Florentine explorer Giovanni da Verrazzano, whose name is misspelled on the bridge, as well as for the Narrows. In 1524, while in the service of Francis I of France, Verrazzano became the first European to enter New York Harbor and the Hudson River. It has a central span of 4,260 feet (1,298m) and was the longest suspension bridge in the world at the time of its completion in 1964, surpassing the Golden Gate Bridge by 60 feet, until it was in turn surpassed by 366 feet by the Humber Bridge in the United Kingdom in 1981. It has the eleventh longest main span in the world, while retaining its place as the longest bridge span in the Americas. Its massive towers can be seen throughout a good part of the New York metropolitan area, including from spots in all five boroughs of New York City and in New Jersey.
Made up of two road bridges and a railway bridge located over a section of water known as The Narrows, located between Mill Point and Point Lewis, it connects the Mitchell and Kwinana Freeways, linking the city's northern and southern suburbs. The original road bridge was opened in 1959 and was the largest precastprestressed concrete bridge in the world. Construction of the northern interchange for this bridge necessitated the reclamation of a large amount of land from the river.
The bridge formed part of the Kwinana Freeway which originally ran for only 2.4 miles (3.9km). Over the following decades, the freeway system was expanded to the north and south, greatly increasing the volume of traffic using the bridge. As a result, in 2001, a duplicate traffic bridge was opened to the west of the original bridge, and in 2005, the railway bridge was constructed in the gap between the two traffic bridges. Passenger trains first traversed the Narrows in 2007 with the opening of the Mandurah railway line.
The Narrows Covered Bridge was built to replace the previous bridge that Salmon Lusk had built in 1847, which itself had been built to replace the bridge he'd built in 1840. The first bridge was destroyed in 1847 and the second in 1875.
The Parke County Commissioners didn't decided to replace the bridge for several years and by then iron bridges were becoming popular. Finally on August 24, 1882 the first bids opened. These included: Smith Iron Works(iron)- @$6,680, Wrought Iron Bridge Co.(iron)- @$5,706, King Iron Bridge Co.(iron)- @$2,904, Columbia Bridge Works(iron)- @$3,288, G.F. Haynes(wood)- @$2,704, and J.A. Britton(wood)- $3,750 total. Except for Mr. Britton's bid the others may or may not include the cost for the abutments or other costs. At any rate, all of the bids were rejected.

The double-deck bridge carries 13 lanes of Interstate 278, with seven lanes on the upper level and six on the lower level. Engineer David B. Steinman proposed a bridge across the Narrows in the late 1920s, but plans were deferred over the next twenty years. A 1920s attempt to build a Staten Island Tunnel was aborted, as was a 1930s plan for vehicular tubes underneath the Narrows. Discussion of a tunnel resurfaced in the mid-1930s and early 1940s, but the plans were again denied. In the late 1940s, urban planner Robert Moses championed a bridge across the Narrows as a way to connect Staten Island with the rest of the city. Various problems delayed the start of construction until 1959. Designed by Othmar Ammann, Leopold Just and other engineers at Ammann & Whitney, the bridge opened on November 21, 1964, and a lower deck in 1969 to alleviate high levels of traffic. The New York City government began a $1.5 billion reconstruction of the bridge's two decks in 2014.

The upper level of the Verrazano-Narrows Bridge connecting Staten Island and Brooklyn, New York, was closed on Monday, November 30, due to high winds, police said.
The National Weather Service issued a wind advisory for Brooklyn on November 30, which included a gale warning for the New York Harbor.
Video that surfaced on social media on Monday shows the empty suspension bridge making groaning noises as it shifted in the wind.

Verrazzano-Narrows Bridge, formerly spelled Verrazano-Narrows Bridge, long-span suspension bridge spanning New York Harbor from Brooklyn to Staten Island, built by Othmar H. Ammann from 1959 to 1964. An exceptionally expensive engineering project largely because of the problem of land acquisition, its total cost was $325 million. It is the longest suspension bridge in the United States and the 17th longest in the world.

The Verrazano Narrows Bridge (Interstate 278) is the largest suspension bridge in the western hemisphere with a main suspension span of 4,260 ft. It spans the mouth of the Hudson River and is viewed by many as the Gateway to New York Harbor. The bridge's two towers stand 680 ft. high. Altogether, its two decks carry 12 lanes of traffic.

The Verrazzano-Narrows Bridge (/vərəˈzɑːnoʊ/ vər-ə-ZAH-noh) is a suspension bridge connecting the New York City boroughs of Staten Island and Brooklyn. It spans the Narrows, a body of water linking the relatively enclosed Upper New York Bay with Lower New York Bay and the Atlantic Ocean. It is the only fixed crossing of the Narrows. The double-deck bridge carries 13 lanes of Interstate 278, with seven lanes on the upper level and six on the lower level. The span is named for Giovanni da Verrazzano, who in 1524 was the first European explorer to enter New York Harbor and the Hudson River.
Engineer David B. Steinman proposed a bridge across the Narrows in the late 1920s, but plans were deferred over the next twenty years. A 1920s attempt to build a Staten Island Tunnel was aborted, as was a 1930s plan for vehicular tubes underneath the Narrows. Discussion of a tunnel resurfaced in the mid-1930s and early 1940s, but the plans were again denied. In the late 1940s, urban planner Robert Moses championed a bridge across the Narrows as a way to connect Staten Island with the rest of the city. Various problems delayed the start of construction until 1959. Designed by Othmar Ammann, Leopold Just and other engineers at Ammann & Whitney, the bridge opened on November 21, 1964, and a lower deck in 1969 to alleviate high levels of traffic. The New York City government began a $1.5 billion reconstruction of the bridge's two decks in 2014.
