Session 12 of The Behavioral Observations Podcast features an in-depth conversation with Mary Lynch Barbera, BCBA-D. In this episode, we talk about a wide range of topics including, but not limited to,
Her pre-ABA career as a nurse (which actually involved quite a bit of OBM work!). How she learned about behavior analysis, and how her advocacy for her son led her to becoming a BCBA. The motivation behind writing her best-selling book, The Verbal Behavior Approach, and creating her e-course, Autism ABA Help: Online Training for Professionals and Gung-Ho Parents. What her writing practices are, and how best to avoid, “the curse of knowledge,” when communicating behavioral principles with lay people. Her thoughts on some recent workshops from the recent National Autism Confere...

This book discussed the science of ABA, how kids can have the potential to recover from autism, and how parents and professionals can start to help their children or clients with autism live happier lives to their fullest potential. Recently, I met a speech and language therapy student who picked out two crucial lessons from the set of Applied Behavior Analysis techniques and strategies that I covered in my book. Today I want to share these two lessons and get your input on what lessons stood out the most to you if you’ve read my book already. If you haven’t yet read my book, I encourage you to do so, especially if you love my video blogs. I’ve talked a lot about the Verbal Behavior Approach on this channel, but what is verbal behavior, what is the verbal behavior approach? In short, it’s one of the many autism ABA techniques that happens to be an extension of Applied Behavior Analysis. And if you’re wondering what is applied behavior analysis, then that’s what we’ll be covering in this video as well. Autism research has come up with numerous methodologies to treat or prevent autism, and ABA and the Verbal Behavior approach are just two of the most popular. When going through autism training, professionals tend to work with one or both methodologies. Both autism strategies are super useful, and I happen to be a strong supporter of the Verbal Behavior approach.

Her thoughts on some recent workshops from the recent National Autism Conference at Penn State University.
Mary shares tons of resources in this episode, so please check out www.behavioralobservations.com for the Session 12 show notes. She also has generously provided listeners with a $50 coupon for her course. Enter BEHAVIORPOD at checkout to redeem it. B.F. Skinner - the most influential psychologist of the 20th century - uncovered the natural laws of behavior:
- reinforcement
- extinction
- motivation
- punishment
- stimulus control
In his landmark book Verbal Behavior (1957), B.F. Skinner detailed how language develops in human beings under the principles of behavior.
Dr. Carbone reviews the evolution of the field of Applied Behavior Analysis (ABA) which makes use of methods based upon behavior principles and the book Verbal Behavior.
This video was recorded during Dr. Carbone's workshop on March 6th 2019 in Edinburgh, Scotland. Dr. Carbone provides workshops each year in the spring (UK) and in the fall (Dubai).
At The Carbone Clinic, we are committed to providing quality ABA services to children and adults with autism and other related disabilities.
In Dubai:
The Carbone Clinic specializes in the treatment and education of children and adolescents with autism and other special needs. For families in Dubai, we provide clinic-based one-on-one instruction, developing skills through the provision of direct instruction several hours per week.
For families living outside Dubai, we provide autism consultation services to parents who would like a review or a second opinion on their child’s current program. We assess the child, train the family and the child’s therapist, and provide the families with a program that can be run in their home country. We continue to remotely support the child’s development, and families have the opportunity to come back to our Center periodically to refresh training, and for our team to evaluate the child's progress first hand.

In this video,we provide a comprehensive explanation of verbal behavior within the context of Applied Behavior Analysis (ABA). Verbal behavior refers to communication and language skills, emphasizing not only the presence of language but also how it is used. We highlight the importance of teaching across different language operants, such as labeling, receptively identifying, requesting, and matching. By utilizing a verbal behavior approach, learners are taught to understand and apply language in various contexts and functions.
We also discuss the concept of mixing and varying skills, demonstrating that teaching language is not limited to one program or skill at a time. We explain that true verbal behavior instruction involves a combination of new targets (around 20%) and mastered targets (around 80%), promoting a more natural learning experience.
How to ABA brings practical programs and resources to you! Whether you are a brand new BCBA, BCaBA, or RBT, or have been in the field for a while, How to ABA has something for everyone.
