What is a vaginal yeast infection?
A vaginal yeast infection, also called candidiasis or a vaginal thrush, is caused by excessive growth of Candida in the vagina. Candida is a type of yeast which is normally present in the vagina in small numbers.
It is important to note that candidiasis is very common. Approximately 20% of women get an infection yearly. And about 75% of will have at least one infection in their lifetime.
Lastly, this east infection can be diagnosed by testing a sample of the vaginal discharge
Risk factors:
The usage of antibiotics, pregnancy, diabetes, HIV, a high carb diet and poor personal hygiene.
Symptoms:
Irritation, itching, burning sensation while peeing, a thick white vaginal discharge without smell, pain during sex and redness around the vagina. Symptoms often get worse during your periods.
Lifestyle interventions:
People often suggest to wear cotton underwear and loose fitting clothing. The idea here is that synthetic underwear as well as thigh clothing make you more sweaty, which enables the yeast to grow faster.
Don’t use a vaginal douch or scented hygiene products for your genitals. These can irritate your skin, increasing your risk for an yeast infection.
Get a medical examination
Now if you do experience any of the previously mentioned symptoms it would be wise to visit your doctor and get yourself checkout. So you know there is no other infection going on.
Antifungal drugs:
Once you know you are indeed dealing with a vaginal yeast infection it can be treated with antifungal drugs. In most countries these can be bought without prescription. Antifungal medicines come in the form of creams, tablets, ointments, or suppositories that you insert into your vagina.
Next up, it is important to note that if you get more than four vaginal yeast infections a year, or if your yeast infection doesn't go away after using over-the-counter treatment, you may need to contact your doctor, who might prescribe a regular doses of antifungal medicine for up to six months.
Probiotics:
Lastly, there is little medical evidence for the use of probiotics in the treatment of a vaginal yeast infection.

Vaginal yeast infection treatment with Pelvic Floor Physical Therapist Michelle from https://www.pelvicexercises.com.au Treat yeast infection symptoms for immediate relief from vaginal itching and burning and long-term relief from Candida Albicans overgrowth (thrush). Learn the natural home yeast treatments that don’t work, the 2 most effective antifungal treatments and how to manage recurrent yeast infection.
Yeast Infection Timestamps
1:09 Vaginal yeast infection symptoms
1:30 Immediate symptom relief OTC remedies
2:37 Natural yeast infection treatments that don’t work
4:36 Effective vaginal yeast infection treatment
7:13 Time for thrush symptoms to stop
7:20 Recurrent yeast infection management
Vaginal Yeast Infection Symptoms
*Itching
*Burning
*Dryness
*Swelling and redness
*White thick discharge is not a definite sign of a vaginal yeast infection.
Causes of Yeast Infection
*Antibiotics
*High sugar levels in urine
*High estrogen levels for example just before menstruation, during pregnancy or HRT therapy
*Smoking cigarettes or cannabis
*Clothing that traps moisture e.g. latex, waterproof incontinence underwear, pads or panty liners that trap moisture
Home Remedies for Thrush to Avoid
*Candida diet is not backed by scientific evidence
*Garlic is an antifungal treatment that burns vaginal tissues
*Tea tree oil lacks scientific evidence and can cause irritation and allergy
*Yogurt can soothe but is not an antifungal
Treatments for Vaginal Yeast Infection
Medications for immediate symptom relief:
*Antihistamines such as Zyrtec can help reduce itching
*Topical steroid cream with 1% hydrocortisone on the vulva can also reduce swelling, redness and itching (speak with your doctor)
The most common yeast infections from Candida Albicans overgrowth. Two forms of antifungal medications treat thrush:
*Oral medication
*Topical creams or pessary
Both are equally effective for treating Candida albicans which causes approximately 90% of vaginal yeast infections.
Topical over the counter medications to treat vaginal yeast infection are drugs known as azoles such as clotrimazole. Topical creams act locally in the vagina and don't cause nausea that the oral medication can cause. Some women experience burning when applied.
Oral medication is Fluconazole (Diflucan) where 1 dose is usually used for mild to moderate yeast infection. Oral antifungals can interact with other medications and may have other effects on the body systems. Check with your doctor or pharmacist first before taking oral antifungal medications.
How long for Vaginal Yeast Treatment to Work?
Symptoms usually start to ease within 3 days but may take a week to fully resolve.
How to Manage Recurrent Yeast Infection
When antifungal medications are ineffective see your doctor. Symptoms may not be caused by vaginal yeast infection or the yeast may not be treated by regular antifungal medications.
