Exploring the Isle of Portland in Dorset! | Jurassic Coast Circular Walk, UK
Hey all! In this video we are exploring the Isle of Portland in Dorset! This Jurassic Coast walk in the UK is a fantastic way to see all of the highlights and best views from the Isle of Portland - a 6km tied island on England's south coast!
Highlights include: Portland Bill Lighthouse, Pulpit Rock, Tout Quarry, Olympic Rings Lookout and a ton of amazing viewpoints as you make your way around the coastline of the island. You will be following the South West Coast Path most of the way around and can start from either the north or south of the island. We started from Portland Bill Lighthouse and walked round in a clockwise direction!
The total length of our route was about 16km so if you are after something a little shorter then you could just walk up one side of the island (we suggest t...

Portland, The Story of an Island Part 1. A history of one of the most fascinating places in England
Part 1 of the story of the Island and Royal manor of Portland. The script is based on my book "Portland: An Illustrated History". Digitised from the original 1998 VHS tape, this is a potted history of the unique Island and Royal Manor of Portland, England. Many of the characters and interviewees are no longer with us. The landscape has changed and some of the features are now hardly recognisable, but the character and natural environment are still to be appreciated today. Written by Stuart Morris, a 'Video SouthWest' Production.

Walking The Entire Isle Of Portland: Jurassic Coast, South West Coast Path, Dorset, UK #greenspaces
What a quirky and epic place the Isle of Portland is, a proper 'must see'! We decided to walk around the whole Isle using the South West Coast Path, which turned out to be 10.5 miles, worth every step. Portland Bill Drone Flight FORTS and FORBIDDEN CITY
The Island of Portland Bill has some interesting fortifications and 2 prisons and due to the restricted access is best viewed by drone. I am uncertain if this footage was not uploaded to the channel by error, so if this is a duplicate I apologise.
The term frbidden city is what has been given to the dockland area which was so large that it was considered by locals to be a city and being offlimits then earned the city the title forbidden. Most of the military presence has gone from the area so the forbidden title is probably no longer deserved.
Portland Bill is a narrow promontory (or bill) at the southern end of the Isle of Portland, and the southernmost point of Dorset, England. One of Portland's most popular destinations is Portland Bill Lighthouse. Portland's coast has been notor...

Isle of Portland | Dorset | 2021 | U.K.
Exploring the Isle of Portland. Channelling the energies in the Memory Stones circle, meeting some stone sculptors, walking the West Weares, looking for some good spots to throw old car batteries into the sea, and checking out Portland Bill, the Trinity House Obelisk and the Pulpit Rock. Dorset, U.K. 29/06/2021
And I'm still using Cornish dialect phrases even though I'm not in Cornwall anymore. I just like it.
Cornish sayings used in this video:
Look at ee minit - Look at him
Gotta face like a diseased ham bone - He's ugly
It's darker than a dog's guts with it's arsehole blocked - It's very dark
Leaking like a bull's arse shit leaking - It's leaking

Unique film! The Last Train to Easton, Portland railway 1965
A unique record of the last passenger train to Portland, on Saturday 27th March 1965. Ghostly images! From my original Super-8 cine film. A glimpse of a long-lost scene, before so many of Britain's lovely branch lines were closed after the Beeching report. This unique footage shows just a short section, between Wakeham and Easton. Further around, the cliff-hugging line was one of the most picturesque coastal railways in England. The normal passenger services on the Weymouth to Portland line ceased in 1952, but goods traffic continued until 1965. Three 'specials' ran on the last day. (Sorry about the typo in title, 'glimpse')

What a quirky and epic place the Isle of Portland is, a proper 'must see'! We decided to walk around the whole Isle using the South West Coast Path, which turned out to be 10.5 miles, worth every step. We started from a free road parking area (DT5 1LQ) and headed towards Tout Quarry Reserve and Sculpture Park.
An extremely interesting spot to explore, a disused Portland and Purbeck stone quarry with persevered signs of the old industry mixed with the most beautiful sculptures, there is even an area for people to learn the art of carving in stone, we loved it here, spent a long time just admiring the work. The whole place is now a reserve, full of specialist species such as, rock stonecrop, Portland spurge and very rare lichens.
From here we jumped back onto the South West Coast Path, also the Jurassic Coast, over looking the dramatic Chisel Beach, a natural barrier beach that links the isle with the mainland and headed towards the imposing fortress, Blacknor Fort, used as a defense outpost in both World Wars. There are many signs of this isle being used as a defensive and observational area during WW1 & WW2, including Anti-Aircraft gun emplacements and pillboxes.
As we walked down to Portland Bill itself, we passed the first of the 3 lighthouses on the Isle, two (twin lighthouses) are now decommissioned, one of which is used as a bird Observatory. The very famous red and white Portland Bill Lighthouse is still in use, and is pretty spectacular!
We then continued along this unusual coast, with the waves crashing into the limestone cliffs, until we reached Church Ope Cove, where the first Viking attack on the British Isles was recorded. We spent some time investigating the Norman church ruins and castle (no public access to castle but it can be seen clearly).
After a short walk from Church Ope Cove we headed up the cliffs reaching an old Young Offenders Institute, past the East Weare C Battery and to the Victorian HMP The Verne, currently in use as an adult prison but was once a huge citadel for defense of the South coast and as refuge for the Navy.
We really had an awesome time exploring this industrial, natural, defensive, prison ridden, lighthouse littered, wild but tamed Isle.
Thank you for being here, all the best, Ceri & Kat!

Portland's coast has been notorious for the number of shipwrecked vessels over the centuries. The dangerous coastline features shallow reefs and the Shambles sandbank, made more hazardous due to the strong Portland tidal race.[1]
The Bill is an important way-point for coastal traffic, and three lighthouses have been built to protect shipping. The original two worked as a pair from 1716, and they were replaced in 1906 by the current one.[1]

Lost Ships XIV: The Age of the Steamship
1712: A new invention makes its debut on the world's stage, the Steam Engine, ushering in the Industrial Revoution and the beginning of the end for what has come to be known as the Age of Sail. As the 19th Century dawned a new breed of ship was born, ships that would come to dominate the world's oceans, rivers and lakes from the 19th Century until the end of the Second World War: The Steamship.
Yet like so many things built by men, these technological marvels were still susceptible to the wrath of war and nature, and simple human error. Today the age of the Steamship has passed, yet the oceans remain littered with the remains of those vessels whose lives ended in tragedy. Silent tombstones marking forgotten graves

I first met Carlos in 2007, and visited him a number of times over a period of several months. He was part of a small group of people who had made homes for themselves in abandoned parts of an Amtrak train tunnel that runs under the West Side highway in New York City.
Carlos was very friendly. He showed me his home on several occasions, and invited me in at one point to help him fix his computer. He had an interesting life, and I am grateful he was willing to be on camera.
Carlos no longer lives in the Freedom Tunnel. A number of years ago the authorities removed all the people living in the tunnel, and cleaned up the area. The section of tunnel that Carlos and several other homeless people had chosen to live in is very different now.
One of Carlos' friends has set up a Gofundme for him. Thank you to everyone who wishes to help him.

PART THREE OF THREE
James McNeill Whistler, John Singer Sargent, and William Bouguereau
This exciting 3-part series looks at seven of the world’s best oil painters from history and examines how each laid down their paint layers to create their masterpieces. Part three covers three amazing artists who were all contemporaries of one another but whose styles varied significantly.
American artist, James McNeill Whistler, was one of the most influential of the avant-garde painters in the late 19th and early 20th centuries. John Singer Sargent painted stylistic portraits of some of the biggest names of his time, and William Bouguereau was one of the most renown artists in Western Europe during his lifetime.
PART ONE - Jan van Eyck and Titian

The Rockland Public Library is pleased to present this recording of our event with Kevin Johnson.
Kevin Johnson, photo archivist for the Penobscot Marine Museum in Searsport, Maine gives a guided tour of Rockland photographs found in the museum’s photography archives. Penobscot Marine Museum’s photography archive is made up of dozens of collections and includes more than 300,000 photographic images spanning the 1880s to the recent past. Johnson’s slideshow and talk explores the various collections with a special feature on Rockland, including the works of Kosti Ruohomaa, Maynard Bray, and Ed Coffin.
Kevin Johnson earned his bachelor’s degree from St. Joseph’s University and worked for a number of years working as a paralegal before deciding he wanted to shift his focus to fine art photography. He earned his Professional Certificate in Photography from the Maine Photographic Workshops, where he first encountered the Eastern Illustrating and Publishing Company’s postcard collection. When the collection needed to be rehoused in 2007, Penobscot Marine Museum brought it into their archive. As the museum’s Photo Archivist, Kevin Johnson has cultivated its current collection into a robust array of works.
