Founded in 1972 following the landmark UN Conference on the Human Environment, UNEP was conceived to monitor the state of the environment, inform policy making with science and coordinate responses to the world’s environmental challenges.
Since its creation, UNEP has worked closely with its 193 Member States and other stakeholders to galvanize worldwide commitments and coordinated action to address many of the world’s most pressing environmental challenges. It also played a leading role as the docking station for 15 multilateral environmental agreements.

Broken record: UNEP's #EmissionsGap Report 2023
The Emissions Gap Report is UNEP's spotlight report launched annually in advance of the annual Climate negotiations. The EGR tracks the gap between where global emissions are heading with current country commitments and where they ought to be to limit warming to 1.5°C. Each edition explores ways to bridge the emissions gap.
In addition to providing an update on where global GHG emissions are heading and where they should be, the 2023 edition focuses on energy transitions in low- and middle-income countries and looks at the role of carbon dioxide removal (CDR) in bridging the emissions gap. This year is a crucial year as it is the Global Stocktake, the EGR launches a week ahead of COP28 and will serve as a key input to the Global Stocktake.

We are experiencing a dangerous decline in nature: One million species are threatened with extinction, soils are turning infertile and water sources are drying up.
But there are glimmers of hope: Mountain regions face unique challenges. Climate change is melting glaciers, eroding soils and driving species uphill – often toward extinction. Yet, in Uganda, Rwanda, Serbia and Kyrgyzstan vulnerable animal species are bouncing back. Watch to learn how mountain countries are creating opportunities for people – to help nature recover.
The Multi-country Mountain Initiative has been recognized as a World Restoration Flagship under the UN Decade on Ecosystem Restoration.
These initiatives represent Earth’s frontiers of hope, as countries agreed to a new Global Biodiversity Framework. Under the agreement, countries promise to protect 30% of the planet’s lands and seas, and bringing back 20% from degradation.
