STORYLINE:
British Ministry of Defence (MOD) officials have confirmed English submarines took part in missile attacks on military targets within Afghanistan on Sunday.
At least one of three British submarines deployed in the area launched Tomahawk missiles at strategic targets inside Afghanistan.
The submarines involved were the Superb, Trafalgar and Triumph.
At a press conference with military chiefs, Defence Secretary Geoff Hoon denied some media reports that civilians had been hurt or their property damaged in the overnight raids.
He said the 30 targets included the al Qaida network of terrorist training camps and military installations belonging to the Taliban regime who have supported the terrorist group.
Airfields, anti-aircraft weapon emplacements and a garrison were among the military targets
A battle damage assessment will be undertaken to determine just how successful the air and missile assault was.
British military chiefs say it is only the first salvo in what will be a long and relentless attack on global terrorism.
The Navy's Admiral Sir Michael Boyce said the British armed services and its allies were committed to the "long haul" military campaign against Osama bin Laden who is believed to have masterminded the suicide plane attacks on New York and Washington.
Describing the three-day visit as "entirely routine", the Ministry of Defence said it had been arranged some time ago.
