Types of Prickly Pear Cactus
Prickly Pear Types @ParadiseOnPennies
Today, I’m presenting several Prickly Pear cacti you can meet in North America.
You’ll see the Brown-spined prickly pear, a common prickly pear especially in the Sonoran and Chihuahuan and other deserts across Arizona to Texas and even up and to Utah. It’s a spreading Cactus with not much of a trunk and not in clusters or tight mounds like the hedgehogs we've seen. Pads grow in chains and are typically about 5 inches in size. It also has juicy red to purple fruits or tunas as they’re called in some places!
You’ll meet the pancake prickly pear which grows up to around 7 feet tall. This guy is like a prickly pear tree with trunk and all!! You can find the pancake prickly pear all over the Southwest and it has orange or yellow flowers!

Opuntia humifusa (Eastern prickly pear) Houseplant Care — 37 of 365
Unusual for the Northeastern United States, Opuntia humifusa, also known as Eastern prickly pear or Devil's tongue, is the ONLY cacti growing natively to this area. I grow this indoors in the colder weather and put it out on my fire escape in the warmer weather, so I figured this classifies as an interesting houseplant and earned the 37 spot of "365 Days of Plants". This one was filmed in its winter dormancy, so its not at its peak performance, but perks right back up in the spring and summer months!
In this video I go over some basic care tips including where this plant grows natively, where I'm growing it in my home, propagation, watering, lighting and more.
You can check out more of these videos here and on my IGTV @homesteadbrooklyn.

And did you know that Prickly Pear's aren't always characteristically green!? Some are a blue green but some are even purple! The Santa Rita Prickly Pear, named for the mountains where it's found, often has a purplish tinge and the discoloration is caused by a pigment known as betacyanin, a product the plant creates in response to stress is like cold or drought or a lack of water access. It has few to no spines.
And there are other spineless varieties, like the Blind Pear. Find out where it gets it name today & learn about a bunch of other prickly pears, many with edible fruits, as we explore Prickly Pears here!

In this episode of In the Kitchen with Matt, I show you how to prepare and eat cactus fruit also known as prickly pear, cactus pear, tuna fruit, opuntia, nopal. Let me show you how to eat them and do a taste test. Let's get started!
Things you will need:
Cactus fruit (green or purple ones)
Knife (that's it)
The taste is somewhat sweet with crunchy hard seeds, which are edible or you can spit them out. The texture and taste is kind of like a mix between a kiwi and a pear or a watermelon and a pear.
