Mamertine Prison
The Mamertine Prison (Italian Carcere Mamertino), in antiquity the Tullianum, was a prison (carcer) located in the Comitium in ancient Rome. It was located on the northeastern slope of the Capitoline Hill, facing the Curia and the imperial fora of Nerva, Vespasian, and Augustus. Located between it and the Tabularium (record house) was a flight of stairs leading to the Arx of the Capitoline known as the Gemonian stairs.
The church of San Giuseppe dei Falegnami now stands above the Mamertine.
Name and origin
The origins of the prison's names are uncertain. The traditional derivation of "Tullianum" is from the name of one of the Roman kings Tullus Hostilius or Servius Tullius (the latter is found in Livy, Varro, and also Sallust); there is an alternative theory that it is from the archaic Latin tullius "a jet of water", in reference to the cistern. The name "Mamertine" is medieval in origin, and may be a reference to a nearby temple of Mars.
According to tradition, the prison was constructed around 640–616 BC, by Ancus Marcius. It was originally created as a cistern for a spring in the floor of the second lower level. Prisoners were lowered through an opening into the lower dungeon.

Eluveitie
Eluveitie (/ɛlˈveɪti/ el-VAY-ti) is a Swiss folk metal band from Winterthur, Zurich, founded in 2002 by Chrigel Glanzmann. The project's first EP, Vên, was released in 2003. Vên was a studio project of Glanzmann's, but its success led to the recruitment of a full band. The band then released a full-length album, Spirit, in June 2006. In November 2007, Eluveitie was signed by Nuclear Blast. The group rose to fame following the release of their first major-label album, Slania, in February 2008. The album peaked at number 35 in the Swiss charts and number 72 in the German charts.
Eluveitie describe themselves as "The new wave of folk metal". The band's style incorporates characteristics of melodic death metal combined with the melodies of traditional Celtic music. They use traditional European instruments, including the hurdy-gurdy and bagpipes, amidst guitars and both clean and harsh vocals. Their lyrics include references to Celtic mythology, particularly the Celtic Gaul village. The lyrics are often in the extinct ancient language Gaulish. The name of the band comes from graffiti on a vessel from Mantua (ca. 300 BC). The inscription in Etruscan letters reads eluveitie, which has been interpreted as the Etruscan form of the Celtic (h)elvetios (“the Helvetian”), presumably referring to a man of Helvetian descent living in Mantua.

It consisted of two superimposed floors of caves dug on the southern slopes of the Capitol, next to the Gemonie Stairs for this called Stairs of Sighs, towards the Comitium. [2] The deepest dates back to the archaic age (VIII-VII century BC) and was dug into the walls of the royal age that - within the Servian walls - protected the Capitol; the second, subsequent and overlapping, is of the Republican age. Underneath it all, an ancient source that still exists.
The complex is located today under the church of San Giuseppe dei Falegnami, of the sixteenth century, in the area of the Forum where, in Roman times, justice was administered.
The Tullianum, the deepest level of the prison, was built, according to Livy, under Anco Marzio in the seventh century BC. The name derives from tullus (pool of water), although some derive it from some traditions that link it to the initiative of Servius Tullius or Tullus Hostilius. [2]
The upper floor was built in the sixth century BC, and restored several times, until, in the early imperial age, the current façade was built. [3]
On the frame of the façade of the early imperial age are engraved the names of Caius Vibius Rufinus and Marcus Cocceius Nerva, who intervened on the monument in the year of their consulate (22 AD). [4]
The Christianization of the complex can be dated around the eighth century, a period to which the traces of a fresco found in the Tullianum date back, and both rooms were converted into chapels. In this same period the place began to be called Mamertine Prison. [5]
The site is now a museum that can be visited and owned by the Vicariate of Rome. [3]

Notable prisoners include Vercingetorix, Simon Gioras, and the Catiline Conspirators. During the late Republic however the demand for prisons increased as reforms to the criminal justice system meant more people were going to court. More public prisons were built as well as growing trend in private prisons. During the transition to the Roman Empire however the consolidation of power prompted a crackdown against private prisons and shifting the focus back to public prisons. These would continue to see use a temporary holdings cells but now also housed enemies of Rome. For the most part however, corporal punishment still remained the norm. This trend would continue through the medieval era and its only with the age of Enlightenment that we start to see justice systems shift to mass incarceration as the preferred vessel for justice.

The MAMERTINUM PRISON, built in the 7th century BC was situated on the Capitoline Hill, facing the Roman Forum.
It held political prisoners and enemies of the state doomed for execution.
It was here at this ancient Roman prison that both the Apostles St. Peter & St. Paul were incarcerated by Emperor Nero.
The Roman historian Gaius Sallustius Crispus, to many known as Sallust, described the TULLIANUM as it was then -
“ "There is a place called the Tullianum, about twelve feet below the surface of the ground. It is enclosed on all sides by walls, and above it is a chamber with a vaulted roof of stone. Neglect, darkness, and stench make it hideous and fearsome to behold.”
This video required extensive research.
But I was compelled to undertake it, because this experience visiting the MAMERTINE truly touched my heart. ♥️

Eluveitie n’est peut-être pas l’inventeur du folk metal, mais les Suisses allient avec tant de brio musique celtique et metal qu’on se demande parfois s’ils ne sont pas les véritables fondateurs du genre. Toujours en quête d’authenticité, le groupe nourrit ses textes de l’histoire, du quotidien et de la spiritualité des Helvètes, un peuple celte de l’antiquité. En celtique, Eluveitie signifie "je suis helvète". D’ailleurs, le fondateur du groupe, Christian Glanzmann, utilise parfois cette langue quand il cisèle les paroles des chansons du groupe. Eluveitie n’est peut-être pas l’inventeur du folk metal, mais les Suisses allient avec tant de brio musique celtique et metal qu’on se demande parfois s’ils ne sont pas les véritables fondateurs du genre. Toujours en quête d’authenticité, le groupe nourrit ses textes de l’histoire, du quotidien et de la spiritualité des Helvètes, un peuple celte de l’antiquité.
En celtique, Eluveitie signifie "je suis helvète". D’ailleurs, le fondateur du groupe, Christian Glanzmann, utilise parfois cette langue quand il cisèle les paroles des chansons du groupe. Les textes sont portés par un trio classique guitare-basse-batterie auquel vient s’ajouter une vielle à roue, une harpe et une cornemuse. Ces bardes modernes ont déjà près de huit albums à leur actif.

The Mamertine prison (or Tullian prison, in Latin Carcer or Tullianum) is an ancient prison, the oldest in Rome[1], and is located in the Roman Forum.
It was the symbolic prison for illustrious prisoners of ancient Rome and it is no coincidence that it is located in a very central area, close to the Via Sacra in the Forum. It has hosted in shackles, for about a thousand years, the great enemies of the people and the state, the great vanquished and the great traitors of Rome: from the king of the Samnites Pontius, to the king of the Gauls Vercingetorix, from Peter the apostle to the conspirators of Catiline.
It consisted of two superimposed floors of caves dug on the southern slopes of the Capitol, next to the Gemonie Stairs for this called Stairs of Sighs, towards the Comitium. [2] The deepest dates back to the archaic age (VIII-VII century BC) and was dug into the walls of the royal age that - within the Servian walls - protected the Capitol; the second, subsequent and overlapping, is of the Republican age. Underneath it all, an ancient source that still exists.
The complex is located today under the church of San Giuseppe dei Falegnami, of the sixteenth century, in the area of the Forum where, in Roman times, justice was administered.
The Tullianum, the deepest level of the prison, was built, according to Livy, under Anco Marzio in the seventh century BC. The name derives from tullus (pool of water), although some derive it from some traditions that link it to the initiative of Servius Tullius or Tullus Hostilius. [2]
The upper floor was built in the sixth century BC, and restored several times, until, in the early imperial age, the current façade was built. [3]
On the frame of the façade of the early imperial age are engraved the names of Caius Vibius Rufinus and Marcus Cocceius Nerva, who intervened on the monument in the year of their consulate (22 AD). [4]
The Christianization of the complex can be dated around the eighth century, a period to which the traces of a fresco found in the Tullianum date back, and both rooms were converted into chapels. In this same period the place began to be called Mamertine Prison. [5]
The site is now a museum that can be visited and owned by the Vicariate of Rome. [3]

The MAMERTINUM PRISON, built in the 7th century BC was situated on the Capitoline Hill, facing the Roman Forum.
It held political prisoners and enemies of the state doomed for execution.
It was here at this ancient Roman prison that both the Apostles St. Peter & St. Paul were incarcerated by Emperor Nero.
The Roman historian Gaius Sallustius Crispus, to many known as Sallust, described the TULLIANUM as it was then -
“ "There is a place called the Tullianum, about twelve feet below the surface of the ground. It is enclosed on all sides by walls, and above it is a chamber with a vaulted roof of stone. Neglect, darkness, and stench make it hideous and fearsome to behold.”
This video required extensive research.
But I was compelled to undertake it, because this experience visiting the MAMERTINE truly touched my heart. ♥️

In this history documentary we begin with an overview of how prisons were present since the earliest civilizations but did not function the same as today. Justice did not involve locking people up. Rather, justice was built around the idea of vengeance and the philosophy of "an eye for an eye". In this context, prisons served merely as temporary holding cells while people awaited trial or their punishment.
In ancient Rome we see this with the Mamertine prison which was built during the early monarchy. Consisting of a small dungeon, it never saw widespread use and was instead reserved for mostly high profile figures like war captives. Notable prisoners include Vercingetorix, Simon Gioras, and the Catiline Conspirators. During the late Republic however the demand for prisons increased as reforms to the criminal justice system meant more people were going to court. More public prisons were built as well as growing trend in private prisons. During the transition to the Roman Empire however the consolidation of power prompted a crackdown against private prisons and shifting the focus back to public prisons. These would continue to see use a temporary holdings cells but now also housed enemies of Rome. For the most part however, corporal punishment still remained the norm. This trend would continue through the medieval era and its only with the age of Enlightenment that we start to see justice systems shift to mass incarceration as the preferred vessel for justice.

The MAMERTINUM PRISON, built in the 7th century BC was situated on the Capitoline Hill, facing the Roman Forum.
It held political prisoners and enemies of the state doomed for execution.
It was here at this ancient Roman prison that both the Apostles St. Peter & St. Paul were incarcerated by Emperor Nero.
The Roman historian Gaius Sallustius Crispus, to many known as Sallust, described the TULLIANUM as it was then -
“ "There is a place called the Tullianum, about twelve feet below the surface of the ground. It is enclosed on all sides by walls, and above it is a chamber with a vaulted roof of stone. Neglect, darkness, and stench make it hideous and fearsome to behold.”

Mamertine Prison
The Mamertine Prison (Italian Carcere Mamertino), in antiquity the Tullianum, was a prison (carcer) located in the Comitium in ancient Rome. It was located on the northeastern slope of the Capitoline Hill, facing the Curia and the imperial fora of Nerva, Vespasian, and Augustus. Located between it and the Tabularium (record house) was a flight of stairs leading to the Arx of the Capitoline known as the Gemonian stairs.
The church of San Giuseppe dei Falegnami now stands above the Mamertine.
Name and origin
The origins of the prison's names are uncertain. The traditional derivation of "Tullianum" is from the name of one of the Roman kings Tullus Hostilius or Servius Tullius (the latter is found in Livy, Varro, and also Sallust); there is an alternative theory that it is from the archaic Latin tullius "a jet of water", in reference to the cistern. The name "Mamertine" is medieval in origin, and may be a reference to a nearby temple of Mars.
According to tradition, the prison was constructed around 640–616 BC, by Ancus Marcius. It was originally created as a cistern for a spring in the floor of the second lower level. Prisoners were lowered through an opening into the lower dungeon.

Eluveitie n’est peut-être pas l’inventeur du folk metal, mais les Suisses allient avec tant de brio musique celtique et metal qu’on se demande parfois s’ils ne sont pas les véritables fondateurs du genre. Toujours en quête d’authenticité, le groupe nourrit ses textes de l’histoire, du quotidien et de la spiritualité des Helvètes, un peuple celte de l’antiquité.
En celtique, Eluveitie signifie "je suis helvète". D’ailleurs, le fondateur du groupe, Christian Glanzmann, utilise parfois cette langue quand il cisèle les paroles des chansons du groupe. Les textes sont portés par un trio classique guitare-basse-batterie auquel vient s’ajouter une vielle à roue, une harpe et une cornemuse. Ces bardes modernes ont déjà près de huit albums à leur actif.
