Tu BiShvat (Hebrew:ט״ו בשבט) is a Jewish holiday occurring on the 15th day of the Hebrew month of Shevat (in 2016, Tu BiShvat begins at sunset on 24 January and ends at nightfall on 25 January). It is also called "Rosh HaShanah La'Ilanot" (Hebrew:ראש השנה לאילנות), literally "New Year of the Trees." In contemporary Israel, the day is celebrated as an ecological awareness day, and trees are planted in celebration. Its role is important to the concept of Chadash.
Etymology
The name Tu BiShvat is derived from the Hebrew date of the holiday, which occurs on the fifteenth day of Shevat. "Tu" stands for the Hebrew lettersTet and Vav, which together have the numerical value of 9 and 6, adding up to 15. Tu BiShvat is a relatively recent name; the date was originally called "Ḥamisha Asar BiShvat" (חמשה-עשר בשבט), which also means "Fifteenth of Shevat".
Talmud
Tu BiShvat appears in the Mishnah in Tractate Rosh Hashanah as one of the four new years in the Jewish calendar. The discussion of when the New Year occurs was a source of debate among the rabbis: "And there are four new year dates: – The first of Nisan – new year for kings and festivals – The first of Elul – new year for animal tithes. Rabbi Elazar and Rabbi Shimon say: – The first of Tishrei– new year for calculation of the calendar, sabbatical years and jubilees, for planting and sowing – The first of Shevat, according to the school of Shamai; The school of Hillel says: the fifteenth of Shevat" (Rosh Hashana:2a).
Tu Bishvat is a joyous Jewish holiday that celebrates trees and nature. It brings us back to our roots, literally. Learn how to celebrate this nature-loving holiday with naturalist and former park ranger Deborah Newbrun. What will you do to celebrate the birthday of the trees?
The name of this holiday is often spelled Tu B'Shevat or Tu B'Shvat by some - this is a fun digression we're not going to get into here, but just know that Hebrew grammar nerds love to talk about this.

The Jewish Holiday of TU B’SHVAT is the Jewish New Year for the trees also known as Arbor Day. It’s very common to eat different varieties of fruits such as dates, figs, pomegranates, olives and grapes. I find that my kids are quit disconnected from this holiday. So in order to get them more involved and excited I spent the day doing different fun activities with them.
To incorporate nuts and seeds into the menu we made a delicious Baklava. We also decorated a chocolate tree with yummy goodies.
Hope this provides you and your family some fun activities to do together on this day.
Happy TU B’SHVAT from my family to yours. ❤️
Baklava Recipe:
2 cups crushed walnuts
1 cup crushed pistachios
1 egg
Dash on cinnamon
1 cup of sugar
1 tbspn of vanilla extract
Bake at 360 F for 20 minutes

Tu Bishvat is a joyous Jewish holiday that celebrates trees and nature. It brings us back to our roots, literally. Learn how to celebrate this nature-loving holiday with naturalist and former park ranger Deborah Newbrun. What will you do to celebrate the birthday of the trees?
The name of this holiday is often spelled Tu B'Shevat or Tu B'Shvat by some - this is a fun digression we're not going to get into here, but just know that Hebrew grammar nerds love to talk about this.
Tu B'shvat is a Jewish holiday that occurs on the 15th of the Hebrew month Shevat, which is usually around January or February in the secular calendar.

Celebrate Tu B’shvat by hosting or attending a seder. When we typically think of a seder, we think Passover and matzo ball soup. But actually, seder is just a Jewish term to describe a special meal that commemorates a certain holiday or story. The Tu B’shvat seder celebrates trees and its fruit. This video will teach you everything you need to know!

Dive deeper behind the meaning of Tu B'Shvat in our guide: https://www.alephbeta.org/tu-bishvat
Every year, we celebrate the strange Jewish tree holiday of Tu B’Shvat – according to the Talmud, it’s a birthday for all of the trees born in the previous year. And not just a birthday – it’s really a “new year” for the trees. How odd is that?
In this video, Imu Shalev breaks down this strange tree holiday to uncover what Tu B’Shvat really means to us today. Join his journey, as he discovers how Tu B’Shvat is actually all about gratitude to our Creator, for the fruits of the trees.

On Tu BiShvat they celebrated Avinathan's 31st birthday ...On the eve of Tu BiShvat we stood outside the Kirya with lots of posters and balloons that Nvidia prepared.
By Aryeh Stern... Dorit Yitzchak, executive director of Me’irim-Education Is Tradition, said. “Our education system has been taken over ... They didn’t mark Tu BiShvat there this year ... They’re helpless because of the system.” ... .
Many do not even eat the traditional dried fruits – the Tu Bishvat seder, a meal of all the fruits of the land (though most of them are imported from abroad) ... Tu Bishvat for me is a holiday of the formation of connections between all seasons.
) Tu BiShvat, the holiday known as the 'New Year for Trees', is a time-honoured celebration of nature's renewal and the vital role trees play in our ecosystem ...
