In this episode of #FunWithFlags I talk about the Maritime Flags that countries use. How they range from Civil to State, Naval Ensigns, Jacks, etc.
There's no unique rule to how countries represent themselves at sea. A lot of times these flags can be used together or individually. And the type of flag used by each category can be unique or equal to those used on land.

International maritime ship flags codes and signals with Morse Code
Although you would now most commonly see signal flags in use for dressing ships on special occasions, they are still used all over the world to signal between two ships or between ship and shore. The International code of signals (ICS or INTERCO) is the name given to this communication system.
It is important that sailors and boaters understand the meanings of these flags. Some flags can alert you to a weather warning, while others can let you communicate with other ships even if they do not speak the same language as you.
The nautical flag alphabet consists of 26 square flags, one for each letter, ten numeral pennants (long tapering flag), one answering pennant, and three repeaters or substitutes. Each letter of the alphabet has a different ICS message associated. The flags can be used to spell out specific words as well.
Learn how to read the signal flags of each letter and the related ICS message in this video. Each flag/letter is accompanied with the NATO phonetic alphabet. These words help to avoid confusion between letters with similar sounds, such as "m" and "n." Morse Code also represents each letter.

What are day shapes?
Day shapes are mast head signals comprised of geometric shapes. These signals convey the status of a vessel during daylight hours. The four basic shapes of the markers are ball, cylinder, cone, and diamond.
The meanings of the shapes are defined by the International Regulations for Preventing Collisions at Sea (colregs).
Day shapes correspond to the various navigation lights required to be shown at night, and are required to be complied with by day from sunrise to sunset.
