Did the First Triumvirate Destroy the Roman Republic?
The so-called "first triumvirate," composed of Pompey the Great, Marcus Crassus, and Julius Caesar, is sometimes given disproportionate blame for the collapse of the Roman Republic in the 1st century BC. These three tyrannical conspirators, the story goes, collaborated to fatally weaken the Republic for their own gain, with Caesar--according to this version of events--eventually striking the death-blow upon his election to Dictator for Life.
But how much conspiring did these three powerful, ambitious, proud men really do? Were they consciously working as a team, or did their interests coincidentally align in some key instances? Is it even fair to call them a triumvirate? Did they call themselves that?
We take on all of these questions and more in our defense of the first triumvirate, wh...

Augustus the Butcher?: Proscriptions of the 2nd Triumvirate
Today, Augustus Caesar is remembered as the (mostly) benevolent, hyper-competent first emperor of Rome, and is often thought to be among history's all-time great leaders. But you can't make an omelette without cracking a few eggs, and you certainly don't become emperor of the most powerful nation-state of the ancient world without a few people -- or possibly many thousands of people -- dying in the process.
In this video, we look at the readiness of Augustus and his fellow triumvirs, Antony and Lepidus, to have their political enemies hunted and killed. It would solidify their hold on the moribund former Republic, but at what cost?

The Roman Empire. Or Republic. Or...Which Was It?: Crash Course World History #10
In which John Green explores exactly when Rome went from being the Roman Republic to the Roman Empire. Here's a hint: it had something to do with Julius Caesar, but maybe less than you think. Find out how Caesar came to rule the empire, what led to him getting stabbed 23 times on the floor of the senate, and what happened in the scramble for power after his assassination. John covers Rome's transition from city-state to dominant force in the Mediterranean in less than 12 minutes. Well, Rome's expansion took hundreds of years, he just explains it in under 12 minutes. The senate, the people, Rome, the caesarian section, the Julian calendar, and our old friend Pompey all make appearances, but NOT the Caesar Salad, as Julius had nothing to do with it.

We take on all of these questions and more in our defense of the first triumvirate, who, we will argue, perhaps don't deserve quite so much blame as they often get.
