Trieste (/triːˈɛst/;Italian pronunciation:[triˈɛste]listen) (Slovenian Trst, German Triest) is a city and seaport in northeastern Italy. It is situated towards the end of a narrow strip of Italian territory lying between the Adriatic Sea and Slovenia, which lies almost immediately south and east of the city. Trieste is located at the head of the Gulf of Trieste and throughout history it has been influenced by its location at the crossroads of Latin, Slavic, and Germanic cultures. In 2009, it had a population of about 205,000 and it is the capital of the autonomous region Friuli-Venezia Giulia and the Province of Trieste.
Trieste was one of the oldest parts of the Habsburg Monarchy. In the 19th century, it was the most important port of one of the Great Powers of Europe. As a prosperous seaport in the Mediterranean region, Trieste became the fourth largest city of the Austro-Hungarian Empire (after Vienna, Budapest, and Prague). In the fin-de-siecle period, it emerged as an important hub for literature and music. It underwent an economic revival during the 1930s, and Trieste was an important spot in the struggle between the Eastern and Western blocs after the Second World War. Today, the city is in one of the richest regions of Italy, and has been a great centre for shipping, through its port (Port of Trieste), shipbuilding and financial services.
Trieste was the first manned vessel to have reached the bottom of the Challenger Deep.
Design
Trieste consisted of a float chamber filled with gasoline (petrol) for buoyancy, with a separate pressure sphere to hold the crew. This configuration (dubbed a bathyscaphe by the Piccards), allowed for a free dive, rather than the previous bathysphere designs in which a sphere was lowered to depth and raised again to the surface by a cable attached to a ship.
Trieste was designed by the Swiss scientist Auguste Piccard and originally built in Italy. His pressure sphere, composed of two sections, was built by the company Acciaierie Terni. The upper part was manufactured by the company Cantieri Riuniti dell'Adriatico, in the Free Territory of Trieste (on the border between Italy and Yugoslavia); hence the name chosen for the bathyscaphe. The installation of the pressure sphere was done in the Cantiere navale di Castellammare di Stabia, near Naples. Trieste was launched on 26 August 1953 into the Mediterranean Sea near the Isle of Capri. The design was based on previous experience with the bathyscaphe FNRS-2. Trieste was operated by the French Navy. After several years of operation in the Mediterranean Sea, the Trieste was purchased by the United States Navy in 1958 for $250,000.
In historical Germanic society, nīþ (Old Norse:níð; Old English:nīþ, nīð; Old Dutch:nīth); was a term for a social stigma implying the loss of honour and the status of a villain. A person affected with the stigma is a nīðing (Old Norse:níðingr, Old English:nīðing, nīðgæst, or Old High German:nidding), one lower (cf. modern English beneath, modern Dutch beneed/beneden, modern German nieder and modern Danish nedre) than those around him.
Middle English retained a cognate nithe, meaning "envy" (cf. modern Dutch nijd and modern German neid/neidvoll), "hate", or "malice."
A related term is ergi, carrying the connotation of "unmanliness".
Níð, argr, ragr and ergi
Ergi and argr or ragr can be regarded as specifying swearwords. Ergi, argr and ragr were the severe insults made by calling someone a coward, and due to its severity old Scandinavian laws demanded retribution for this accusation if it had turned out unjustified. The Icelandic Gray Goose Laws referred to three words that were regarded as equal to argr by themselves. Those were ragr, strodinn, and sordinn, all three meaning the passive role of a man included in same-sex activities among males. Another semantic belonging to argr, ragr and ergi was, from the Gray Goose, "being a sorcerer's friend."

How Italy Got Slovenia's Coastline
If you look at a map of Slovenia's coastline, it kind of looks like Italy went way out of its way just to get the city of Trieste, but that's sort of obscuring the whole story, which I reckon should take about 7-8 minutes to explain in the form of an educational YouTube video

The Free Territory of Trieste (1947 – 1954)
The Free Territory of Trieste (1947–1954) was the result between a dispute between the West and the East, between the United States and the Soviet Union, between Italy and Yugoslavia. Once part of the Austro-Hungarian Empire the Italians took it after World War One was over. However, after the Second World War the new Yugoslav state, led by Josip Broz Tito claimed it. British Gen. Sir William Morgan proposed a temporalily solution and the Morgan Line was created. The Tito–Stalin split (Yugoslav–Soviet split) put an end to the tensions. It was formalized much later in 1975 by the Treaty of Osimo. The history of Trieste is a forgotten episode in history of the Cold War.

If you look at a map of Slovenia's coastline, it kind of looks like Italy went way out of its way just to get the city of Trieste, but that's sort of obscuring the whole story, which I reckon should take about 7-8 minutes to explain in the form of an educational YouTube video

Trieste is hidden in the northeast of Italy. It is out of the way and gets skipped by a number of travelers, and you shouldn't! Trieste is a wonderful combination of Italian and Austrian culture with wonderful food, architecture, and museums, and to go and explore the hills and water is great too!

Trieste is hidden in the northeast of Italy. It is out of the way and gets skipped by a number of travelers, and you shouldn't! Trieste is a wonderful combination of Italian and Austrian culture with wonderful food, architecture, and museums, and to go and explore the hills and water is great too!

In 1960, Lieutenant Don Walsh of the US Navy and Swiss oceanographer Jacques Piccard navigated the Trieste bathyscaphe into the Mariana Trench. They accomplished a feat so incredible that it forever raised the bar for deep-ocean exploration.

Trieste is a Swiss-designed, Italian-built deep-diving research bathyscaphe which reached a record depth of about 10,911 metres in the Challenger Deep of the Mariana Trench near Guam in the Pacific. On 23 January 1960, Jacques Piccard and US Navy Lieutenant Don Walsh achieved the goal of Project Nekton. It was the first crewed vessel to reach the bottom of the Challenger Deep.
Cette machine révolutionnaire, le bathyscaphe, permet de réaliser une prouesse : voir les créatures sous marines dans leur habitat naturel.

An American explorer has descended nearly 11km (seven miles) to the deepest place in the ocean - the Mariana Trench in the Pacific.
Victor Vescovo spent four hours exploring the bottom of the trench with the risk of his submersible imploding if anything were to go wrong.
The dive was later verified to be 10,972m and Victor became the first person to reach the deepest part of the Pacific Ocean.
