In sailing, the trapeze refers to a wire that comes from a point high on the mast, usually where the shrouds are fixed, to a hook on the crew member's harness at approximately waist level. The position when extended on the trapeze is outside the hull, braced against it (or an extension of it outwards) with the soles of the feet, facing the masthead, and clipped on by a hook on the trapeze harness. This gives the crew member more leverage to keep the boat flat by allowing the crew member's centre of gravity to balance the force of the wind in the sails.
An additional benefit is the ability to "walk" along the gunwale to balance the boat's trim fore and aft. This is necessary to prevent racing catamarans such as the Tornado from digging the bow into the water, also called pitchpoling, and causing a nosedive and often a spectacular capsize.
Boats may have only one trapeze, such as the 420, where only the crew uses the trapeze. Boats, such as the 49er, may have trapeze wires for both the skipper and the crew. Trapeze has several colloquial names such as "the wire" or simply "the trap".
A trapeze is a short horizontal bar hung by ropes or metal straps from a support. It is an aerial apparatus commonly found in circus performances. Trapeze acts may be static, spinning (rigged from a single point), swinging or flying, and may be performed solo, double, triple or as a group act. It is officially the last performance of the circus.
History
The art of trapeze performance was developed by Jules Léotard, a young French acrobat and aerialist, in Toulouse in the mid-1800s. He invented the flying trapeze, practising over his father's swimming pool.
Types of trapeze
Static trapeze refers to a trapeze act in which the performer moves around the bar and ropes, performing a wide range of movements including balances, drops, hangs while the bar itself stays generally static. The difficulty on a static trapeze is making every move look effortless. It is like dance, in that most people of a reasonable level of strength can get onto the trapeze bar for the first time and some basic tricks, but an experienced artist will do them with much more grace and style.
The Girl Who Fell from the Sky (as published in the UK by Little, Brown and Company) or Trapeze (as published in the US by Other Press) is a novel written by Simon Mawer, published in 2012. It is a historical novel about a woman during World War II whose ability to speak French and propensity for risk attracts the attention of a Special Operations Executive and eventually leads her to be an agent operating in occupied Europe before she is even twenty years old. Mawer incorporates both fact and fiction in the telling of her story. The American title was chosen to avoid confusion with the 2010 novel by Heidi W. Durrow.
Music website AllMusic awarded Trapeze two out of five stars. Writer Dave Thompson described the album as "a dour little disc, desperately missing the funk infusions of Glenn Hughes and, for the most part, overshadowed even by its disappointing predecessor". Thompson identified opening track "Star Breaker" as "probably the best" song on Trapeze, but summarised the release as "lumpen rock by rote, dull and dismissed by all but the most desperately faithful".
A gear or cogwheel is a rotatingmachine part having cut teeth, or cogs, which mesh with another toothed part to transmit torque, in most cases with teeth on the one gear being of identical shape, and often also with that shape on the other gear. Two or more gears working in a sequence (train) are called a gear train or, in many cases, a transmission; such gear arrangements can produce a mechanical advantage through a gear ratio and thus may be considered a simple machine. Geared devices can change the speed, torque, and direction of a power source. The most common situation is for a gear to mesh with another gear; however, a gear can also mesh with a linear toothed part, called a rack, thereby producing translation instead of rotation.
The gears in a transmission are analogous to the wheels in a crossed belt pulley system. An advantage of gears is that the teeth of a gear prevent slippage.
When two gears mesh, and one gear is bigger than the other (even though the size of the teeth must match), a mechanical advantage is produced, with the rotational speeds and the torques of the two gears differing in an inverse relationship.
Gear is a Linsnarian (named for Joseph Michael Linsner?), a race composed of organic machinery beneath humanoid shells. The Blackstar Juvenile Correctional Facility captured him for use in maintaining their systems. For quite some time, he pretended to be servile, while programming some of his machinery to disable the systems keeping the inmates contained and powerless upon his deactivation. On the arrival of the Legionnaire Sensor on the station, he was convinced by her to move prematurely, and was severely damaged in the process, activating his failsafes.
However, Brainiac 5 successfully repaired him, and Gear remained on the Legion Outpost space station until most of the Legion was lost in a rift and the team was forcefully disbanded as a result. R.J. Brande then made contact with many of the remaining Legionnaires, including Gear, and put together a plan to construct a "Legion World" - an artificial planetoid to house a revived and expanded team, which Gear and Invisible Kid designed and helped to construct.

Strong enough for 1 to 1? The pro setup without pro strength
Over the last 5-10 years 1:1 trapeze adjusters have taken over the professional 49er and Nacra fleets.
But why are the pro's using them? And are mere mortal amateur sailors strong enough to use them too?

4:42 - Laser trapeze
