Transatlantic crossing

Transatlantic crossings are passages of passengers and cargo across the Atlantic Ocean between the Americas and Europe or Africa. The majority of passenger traffic is across the North Atlantic between North America and Western Europe. Centuries after the dwindling of sporadic Viking trade with Markland, a regular and lasting transatlantic trade route was established in 1566 with the Spanish West Indies fleets, following the Voyages of Christopher Columbus.

By sea

Prior to the 19th century, transatlantic crossings were undertaken in sailing ships, and the journeys were time consuming and often perilous. The first trade route across the Atlantic was inaugurated by Spain a few decades after the Discovery of America, with the establishment of the West Indies fleets in 1566, a convoy system which regularly linked its territories in the Americas with Spain for over two centuries. Portugal created a similar maritime route between its ports in Brazil and the Portuguese mainland. Other colonial powers followed, such as Britain, France and the Netherlands, as they colonized the New World.

We left Brooklyn, NY on a sunny but cold day. When we boarded the ship the captain made it very clear we were going to face multiple storms. And we did! THANK GOODNESS WE WERE ON THE QUEEN MARY 2! The Queen Mary 2 is the only actively sailing ocean liner in the world. We were so fortunate to be able to sail on her from New York to Southampton and eventually on to Perth Australia. However the 8 day sailing from New York to Southampton was a journey all by itself with 3 straight days and nights of massive storms and one day of gale force winds. The Queen Mary 2, because of her ocean liner design and the way she was built, handled all the storms like a hot knife through butter. We felt a little rocking and felt safe the whole time. We really embraced the storms only because of the way the ship could handle them. We think if it was any other ship we may have had a “may-day” situation. It was 3 straight days & nights of 30 to 40 foot sea swells, extremely high winds, snow and ice. We were able to have some fun with the situation only because the QM2 made it safe for us. We left Brooklyn, NY on a sunny but cold day. When we boarded the ship the captain made it very clear we were going to face multiple storms. And we did! THANK GOODNESS WE WERE ON THE QUEEN MARY 2! The Queen Mary 2 is the only actively sailing ocean liner in the world. We were so fortunate to be able to sail on her from New York to Southampton and eventually on to Perth Australia. However the 8 day sailing from New York to Southampton was a journey all by itself with 3 straight days and nights of massive storms and one day of gale force winds. The Queen Mary 2, because of her ocean liner design and the way she was built, handled all the storms like a hot knife through butter. We felt a little rocking and felt safe the whole time. We really embraced the storms only because of the way the ship could handle them. We think if it was any other ship we may have had a “may-day” situation. It was 3 straight days & nights of 30 to 40 foot sea swells, extremely high winds, snow and ice. We were able to have some fun with the situation only because the QM2 made it safe for us. This journey started in NY in January 2024 when we boarded the Queen Mary 2 and sailed to Southampton, England - Tenerife, Spain - Walvis Bay, Namibia - Port Elizabeth, Capetown & Durban, South Africa - Reunion Island - Mauritius Island and then finally Perth, Australia. We stayed in an inside cabin (check out our cabin tour & review video) for 45 days that included a Transatlantic Crosssing and 2 Segments of her World Cruise. With many interesting changes in weather, sickness, safety protocols, breaking-news LIVE updates, as well as amazing ports of call with two overnight stops we hope you find our videos both informative and fun to watch. Transatlantic crossing

Transatlantic crossings are passages of passengers and cargo across the Atlantic Ocean between the Americas and Europe or Africa. The majority of passenger traffic is across the North Atlantic between North America and Western Europe. Centuries after the dwindling of sporadic Viking trade with Markland, a regular and lasting transatlantic trade route was established in 1566 with the Spanish West Indies fleets, following the Voyages of Christopher Columbus.

By sea

Prior to the 19th century, transatlantic crossings were undertaken in sailing ships, and the journeys were time consuming and often perilous. The first trade route across the Atlantic was inaugurated by Spain a few decades after the Discovery of America, with the establishment of the West Indies fleets in 1566, a convoy system which regularly linked its territories in the Americas with Spain for over two centuries. Portugal created a similar maritime route between its ports in Brazil and the Portuguese mainland. Other colonial powers followed, such as Britain, France and the Netherlands, as they colonized the New World.
