A tour guide (U.S.) or a tourist guide (European) provides assistance, information and cultural, historical and contemporary heritage interpretation to people on organized tours and individual clients at educational establishments, religious and historical sites, museums, and at venues of other significant interest.
History
In 18th century Japan, a traveler could pay for a tour guide or consult guide books such as Kaibara Ekken's Keijō Shōran (The Excellent Views of Kyoto).
Description
The CEN (European Committee for Standardization) definition for "tourist guide" – part of the work by CEN on definitions for terminology within the tourism industry – is:
CEN also produced a definition for "tour manager":
In Europe, tourist guides are represented by FEG, the European Federation of Tourist Guide Associations. In Europe, the tourist guiding qualification is specific to each and every country; in some cases the qualification is national, in some cases it is broken up into regions. In all cases it is embedded in the educational and training ethic of that country. EN15565 is a European Standard for the Training and Qualification of Tourist Guides.

Being funny is one of those traits that many incredible tour guides seem to share. You don’t have to be funny to be a great guide, but a well placed joke or a good hearted jab can really make your tour a lot more fun.
People love laughing, being surprised and hearing about absurd people and places. A great tour is ultimately a form of entertainment and it is worth it to try and figure out how you can incorporate humour into your experience.
Luckily, there are lots of ways to be funny, but unfortunately, there is nothing less funny than someone trying too hard to tell jokes.
My strategy today is as follows:
1) Check out the above video for some tips on writing jokes for your tour.
2) I’ve found on youtube a tremendously funny English tour guide named Beefeater Bill. His tour lasts just under an hour, but is a great example of a tour guide being hilarious.
Hopefully, you find these videos helpful and they will at least provide you with a little inspiration for being funny on tour!

Let’s start with some good news. The overall number of tour guide jobs is growing globally, and the WTO (United Nations World Tourism Organization) shows reports that global tourism continues to be one of the fastest growing sectors of the global economy! When asking ‘How to get a job as a tour guide?’ I believe there are at least 7 questions you will need to ask yourself first!
In this video I also share some insights into looking for a tour guide job, discuss some of the advantages of working for a smaller or larger tour company and how you can work as a guide internationally or locally.
As mentioned, here are a number of resources to help you on the job search.
First, our amazing Be a Better Guide Team put a lot of effort into researching a list of the largest tour guide employers on the planet. There are over 63 companies on this list that hire guides from all over the world! Use it to research what they are up to and reach out if you are interested in their hiring process. This free PDF can be downloaded right here: http://goo.gl/1XE0UH
Second, here is another one of our videos that will help you understand the distinction between ‘tour guides’ and ‘tour directors’. You’ll need to decide which has more appeal to you, as it will mean approaching different companies to get your tour guide career underway! http://goo.gl/MdbcrM
Third, here is a list of 101 different tour ideas from our friends over at Tourism Tiger. This list is not only amazingly long, but it also shares company websites for each different tour type. Scroll through for inspiration, or maybe even reach out to some of the companies to find your dream job. Check out the list here: http://goo.gl/nhKgLZ
Fourth, another list from Tourism Tiger that shares over 80 different places where you can list your tours and activities online. This list will be a big help to you if you are interested in becoming a freelance guide or start up your own tour company! Furthermore, I highly recommend checking out this listing sites and services, as you can find out what other guides and companies are doing in the area you want to work. https://goo.gl/2zoadA

A day in the life of a Prague tour guide. Follow a Prague tour guide from morning till evening. Valery works in Prague as a tour guide since 2016. To be a guide she studied a course organized by the Prague City Tourism agency. She mainly guides in English but can also speak Russian and Czech. Valery takes tourists through the busy streets of Old Town and the Jewish Quarter on the Free Walking Tour but also does small group tours through the interiors of Prague Castle, which according to the Guinness Book of Records is the largest ancient castle in the world.
Prague is one of the most visited cities in Europe, right after places like London, Paris, and Rome. Over 8 million tourists visited Prague in 2019. Being a guide in a city like this can be quite challenging and in the high season definitely exhausting. But Valery approaches the job with passion and humor and that helps her to overcome many obstacles that wait for her every day.
In this video, you will learn what her typical day in the life looks like. #adayinthelife #prague #realpragueguides

What if one day some mysterious machine would cause a body swap and tour guides would become tourists and tourists would become tour guides? Kind of like one of Franz Kafka's novels. We decided to explore such a possibility in today's video. Have fun!

Today’s Tour Guide Training? How to be a funny tour guide and how to give a funny tour
To see the Beefeater Bill tour, or see all the comments on Be a Better Guide.com, head over here:

Holy cow… that’s a lot of resources!
I know that the getting a job as a tour guide is not always easy, and sometimes it can be discouraging. Hopefully these tools will help you on your way to finding that perfect tour guide job.
As always, be sure to join the Be a Better Guide community for more resources and videos, and thoughtful discussions on what it means to lead unforgettable tours.
All the best and happy hunting!
