Tomatoes are one of the most widely consumed vegetables in the world, with a global production of over 170 million tons per year. They are also a staple crop in the United States, particularly in states like California where its warm and sunny climate is perfect for growing tomatoes. Harvest yields 120,000 pounds per acre.
Commercial tomato harvesting in California typically starts around late June or early July and continues until September. The mechanization of tomato harvesting has played a tremendous role in this process.
In the mid-20th century, the University of California developed the first mechanical tomato harvester. This innovative machine revolutionized the industry, greatly increasing the efficiency and scale of tomato harvesting. Modern mechanical harvesters can traverse a field, picking ripe tomatoes and leaving unripe ones for a later pass. These machines also eliminate most of the manual labor involved, thus significantly reducing labor costs.
The mechanical harvesters work by shaking the plants gently to dislodge the ripe tomatoes, which are then transported by a conveyor belt system to a storage bin. The tomatoes are then sorted and packed directly in the field, ready for transport to processing facilities. This mechanization process has allowed California to maintain its position as a leading tomato producer despite labor shortages and increasing production costs.
