Top of the Pops, also known as TOTP, is a British music chart television programme, made by the BBC and originally broadcast weekly between 1 January 1964 and 30 July 2006. It was traditionally shown every Thursday evening on BBC1, except for a short period on Fridays in mid-1973 before being again moved to Fridays in 1996, and then to Sundays on BBC Two in 2005. Each weekly programme consisted of performances from some of that week's best-selling popular music artists, with a rundown of that week's singles chart. Additionally, there was a special edition of the programme on Christmas Day (and usually, until 1984, a second such edition a few days after Christmas), featuring some of the best-selling singles of the year.
Although the weekly show was cancelled in 2006, the Christmas special has continued. It also survives as Top of the Pops 2, which began in 1994 and features vintage performances from the Top of the Pops archives.
In the 1990s, the show's format was sold to several foreign broadcasters in the form of a franchise package, and at one point various versions of the show were shown in nearly 100 countries. Editions of the programme from the 1970s (and now 1980s) are being repeated on most Thursdays on BBC Four.
Top of the Pops is the name of a series of records issued by Pickwick Records on their Hallmark label, which contain anonymous cover versions of recent and current hit singles. The recordings were intended to replicate the sound of the original hits as closely as possible. The albums were recorded by a studio group comprising session musicians and singers who remained unaccredited, although they included Tina Charles, Elton John and Trevor Horn before they became successful.
Creation of the series
Record producer Alan Crawford conceived the idea for Top of the Pops, having noted several UK labels such as Music for Pleasure pioneer the anonymous covers format during 1967 and 1968. Crawford's key idea was to create a continuous series of albums with the same title. The Pickwick label agreed to undertake Crawford's idea and the first volume was issued in mid-1968, containing versions of twelve hits including "Young Girl", "Jennifer Eccles", "Do You Know The Way To San Jose" and "I Can't Let Maggie Go". A second volume appeared later in the year and included versions of two Beatles songs.
Top of the Pops 2 (also known as TOTP2) is a British television music show broadcast on BBC Two, showing archive footage from the long-running Top of the Pops show, some dating back to the 1960s when the programme first aired on British television.
For the most of Top of the Pops 2, the 2 in their logo is the BBC Two '2' from their idents, first used in 1991, though in 2002 until 2006 the '2' symbol was a new one.
History
The show was originally narrated by BBC Radio 2 DJ Johnnie Walker. Colleague and fellow DJ Steve Wright took over in 1997 and hosted until being replaced by Mark Radcliffe in 2009. The presenter never appears in-vision but provides voice-over commentary that introduces each piece.
The original show format consisted of archival footage apart from the last performance, which was usually a more recent performance or an exclusive performance recorded in the main TOTP studio for TOTP2.
In 2003 the BBC started to run a daily version of TOTP2 in which celebrities chose their favourite archive performances. These celebrities, typically comedians, have included Vic Reeves & Bob Mortimer, Phill Jupitus and Jack Dee. There have also been a number of TOTP2 specials in which a "greatest hits" show dedicated to one musician or band is put together from both archive and new footage.

Oh whatever makes her happy on a Saturday night
Oh whatever makes her happy, whatever makes it alright

We'll go to discos, casinos,
We'll go where people go and let go...

I've just come in at Number 25 I'm oh so happy, so glad to be alive And everybody says it's going to get to the top Life is so easy when your record's hot. Go tell my mamma and my sister too To press my trousers and polish my shoes I might even end up a rock-and-roll god It might turn into a steady job. And my agent said to me: "Son, I always told you so." Now my record's number 11 on the BBC But number seven on the N.M.E. Now the Manager Maker want to interview me And ask my view on politics and theories on religion. Now my record's up to number 3 And a woman recognized me and started to scream This all seems like a crazy dream I've been invited to a dinner with a prominent queen And now I've got friends that I thought I never had before It's strange how people want you when you record's high 'Cos when it drops down they just pass you by Now my agent called me on the telephone and he said:
