The Man Who Set Up His Own Toll Road, Without Permission
http://tomscott.com - @tomscott - Welcome to the Kelston Toll Road: Fed up with a 14-mile diversion caused by a landslip, businessman Mike Watts has taken a £300,000 risk and set up his own private toll road. It costs £2 for cars to travel the 400 metres -- which is slightly less than the cost of the petrol to take the detour. And the odd thing is this: despite the Kelston Toll Road not being approved by the local council, Mike is still on the right side of the law.
Many thanks to Mike Watts and the team at the Kelston Toll Road: they can be found on Twitter at @KelstonTollRoad and, obviously, between Bath and Kelston on the A431!

Why The US Toll System Is So Complicated - Cheddar Explains
If you’re one of the 72% of Americans taking a road trip this year, don’t forget your toll passes---plural. There are, after all, over 130 toll systems across 34 states, so you better be prepared.
Technically, by now, you should be able to have just one transponder. Congress passed a law in 2012 requiring what’s called “interoperability” between all the nation’s toll systems - a concept that means one pass would work for every toll.
That law was supposed to take effect in 2016. Yet here you are in 2021, emerging from the pandemic and packing three or four transponders for your cross-country trip. What gives?

The public toll road with no speed limit
The Nürburgring Nordschleife is the longest permanent racetrack in the world: 21km of unforgiving blind corners and hills, nicknamed "the Green Hell". Oh, and some days, it's also just a public toll road with no speed limit.

Why are toll booths going away?
Toll agencies are tearing down staffed booths (cash lanes) because they are dangerous and slow. Instead, we have to start using electronic toll collection (ETC) -- those special transponder passes. But most toll passes won't work out of state. With no toll booths, how do you pay when you are on vacation?
I speak with Samuel Johnson, the chief operations officer for a southern California toll road agency (The Toll Roads - TCA), about a cool new technology which will soon make paying a toll easier than ever. It's called electronic toll interoperability, and it's all possible with a tiny sticker.

THE TOLL ROAD
In the summer of 2014, four friends met up with foreign pilots to go on the ultimate paramotor adventure - to tour the American Southwest. Only weeks after the trip, Jeff Toll was tragically killed flying at his home flying field in Chesapeake, VA.
Nine months later, remaining members of Team Fly Halo revisited the southwest to honor and commemorate their fallen friend; and to share his story with the world.
The Toll Road is a non-profit and completely independent film, the soul purpose of the production is to honor Jeff Toll's memory and share his love for the sport.

A toll road, also known as a turnpike or tollway, is a public or private road for which a fee (or toll) is assessed for passage. It is a form of road pricing typically implemented to help recoup the cost of road construction and maintenance.
Toll roads in some form have existed since antiquity, collecting their fees from passing travellers on foot, wagon or horseback; but their prominence increased with the rise of the automobile, and many modern tollways charge fees for motor vehicles exclusively. The amount of the toll usually varies by vehicle type, weight, or number of axles, with freight trucks often charged higher rates than cars.
Tolls are collected at points known as toll booths, toll houses, plazas, stations, bars, or gates. Some toll collection points are unmanned and the user deposits money in a machine which opens the gate once the correct toll has been paid. To cut costs and minimise time delay many tolls today are collected by some form of automatic or electronic toll collection equipment which communicates electronically with a toll payer's transponder. Some electronic toll roads also maintain a system of toll booths so people without transponders can still pay the toll, but many newer roads now use automatic number plate recognition to bill drivers who use the road without a transponder, and some older toll roads are being upgraded with such systems.
Criticisms of toll roads include the time taken to stop and pay the toll, and the cost of the toll booth operators—up to about one third of revenue in some cases. Automated toll paying systems help minimise both of these. Others object to paying "twice" for the same road: in fuel taxes and with tolls.
In addition to toll roads, toll bridges and toll tunnels are also used by public authorities to generate funds to repay the cost of building the structures. Some tolls are set aside to pay for future maintenance or enhancement of infrastructure, or are applied as a general fund by local governments, not being earmarked for transport facilities. This is sometimes limited or prohibited by central government legislation. Also road congestion pricing schemes have been implemented in a limited number of urban areas as a transportation demand management tool to try to reduce traffic congestion and air pollution.
