Hakone & The Old Tokaido Road
We're back with another FTJ episode, which sees us going around Hakone on August 11, 2019. Sorry if this video seems a bit...off? I honestly didn't shoot as much footage during it as I had hoped. But, with luck, I salvaged something okay with what I have.
I had hoped to be able to hike a bit during this trip, despite how hot it was. Lucky for me, my friend Will loves to hike, and mentioned Hakone and the old Tokaido Road as an easy spot to hit up. The Old Tokaido Highway in Shizuoka - Overview
The Old Tokaido Highway in Shizuoka - Overview
The ancient Tokaido Highway follows Shizuoka Prefecture’s winding Pacific coastline and expertly juxtaposes the modern and ancient sides of Japan that the country has come to be known for.
Along the original Tokaido Highway there were a total of 53 Post Stations or ‘Shukuba’ / ‘Juku’. 22 of these post stations are located in Shizuoka Prefecture.
Along the Shizuoka leg of the Tokaido you can still catch a glimpse of what inspired artists and travelers all those years ago as they made their journey along this famous road.

Hakone is a beautiful area, even during the summertime.
To my surprise, I did okay with the hike! The only downside was how bad my right knee hurt from all the slippery surfaces along the trail. But other than that, I think I was able to keep up well. Hot tip: always have something on hand to hydrate yourself with, and remember to bring salt tablets. Since you will SWEAT.

THE PATH OF WILDNESS
The Path of Wildness is easy to find
The course of a stream
Leaves blown in the wind
A beast's track through the brush
And the direction of our first inclination
The Path of Wildness is an answer and response to a prescribed way of life which may leave some individuals with a sense that their living is little more than a series of pre-determined, step-like episodes between birth and death. The stages of living between these events: childhood, adolescence, adulthood, parenthood and senior are themselves natural and in accord with the needs of the species and most individuals. Many find their satisfaction in living this course and to these individuals I have little or nothing to say. Others though long for something more; something innate, genetic and seemingly calling. Adventure and change can give a degree of satisfaction and relief yet even these may seem too tame. To those who feel drawn to something beyond the entertainment and stimulation of senses I offer a walk along The Path of Wildness. Don't bother penciling the event in your schedule, preparing a pack with goodies and supplies or even inviting a friend along, for this experience is along the course of your first inclination and you must surely always go alone.

53 Stations of Tokaido (3/6) Ukiyo-e Art Explained and Historical Context | Edo ANDO Hiroshige
【How to Cross Rivers】This is THE PERFECT GUIDE to the Japanese woodblock print series "The Fifty-three Stations of the Tokaido" by UTAGAWA Hiroshige, which depicts the everyday lives of people living along the Tōkaidō network system in the samurai era. His works influenced an art movement known as Japonism and inspired artists such as Monet, Van Gogh, and many other European artists.
The development of the Tokaido Highway increased travel opportunities for ordinary people. However, the rivers were a major obstacle. Here, the intentions of the shogunate are expressed. Together with Hiroshige's Ukiyoe tour guide, we will take a closer look at the lives of the people.

Shank's Mare Book Spoiler Free
Hitch up for a hilarious romp along the Tokaido road in Edo-period Japan with "Shank's Mare" by Ikku Jippensha. This picaresque novel follows two roguish travelers, Yaji and Kita, on their journey from Edo (old Tokyo) to Kyoto.
Forget samurai and stoicism. These guys are all about good times, pranks, and a healthy dose of trouble. Expect bawdy humor, witty exchanges, and plenty of encounters with eccentric characters along the way. Jippensha's sharp eye for detail brings Edo Japan to life, from bustling towns to serene landscapes.
While there's no overarching plot, the episodic adventures keep things fresh and unpredictable. You'll never know what kind of comical situation Yaji and Kita will stumble into next, whether it's outsmarting a greedy innkeeper or charming their way out of a sti...

You'll never know what kind of comical situation Yaji and Kita will stumble into next, whether it's outsmarting a greedy innkeeper or charming their way out of a sticky situation.
Be warned, the humor can be a bit earthy at times, reflecting the commoner culture of the period. But if you're looking for a side-splitting escape that offers a unique glimpse into Japan's past, "Shank's Mare" is the perfect ride. Just grab your imaginary reins and get ready to laugh!

BOOK DESCRIPTION
The dynamic epic novel of political upheaval and societal change in late 1800s Japan, by the #1 New York Times bestselling author and unparalleled master of historical fiction, James Clavell
This epic novel by master writer James Clavell, loosely based on the Namamugi Incident and Anglo-Satsuma War that took place in the late 1800s, is a richly researched, panoramic view of Japan’s budding relationship with the Western powers, its sweeping societal changes, and the political upheaval that followed.
As Malcolm Struan, the son of Culum and Tess Struan, and a small band of Westerners travel down the Tōkaidō road, they are attacked by two Satsuma samurai, who mortally wound John Canterbury and seriously injure Malcolm, who then finds reprieve in the merchant village of Yokohama after a narrow escape facilitated by the unscathed Angelique.
Angelique Richaud, Malcolm’s penniless but beautiful French companion, is thrown into a world of political intrigue, fierce devotion, unstable family dynamics, blackmail, and secrets as the trading houses battle for supremacy.
With a cast of dynamic and fully recognized characters, Gai-Jin spins a tale of passionate love affairs, devastating loss, intense power struggles, and the fight to survive and thrive in a hostile new land that will leave readers longing for another foray into Clavell’s extraordinary Asian Saga.
