The Tongue
Xannon Shirley, better known by the stage name The Tongue, is a musical artist from Sydney, Australia, and is signed to Australian independent label Elefant Traks. He has released two EPs (Bad Education and "Victorious Remixes"), four albums (Shock And Awe, Alternative Energy, Surrender To Victory and Hard Feelings) and three mixtapes (Redux,The Tongue Is Dead and "The Sextape).
Biography
The Tongue is a MC/songwriter from Newtown, Sydney, New South Wales, Australia.
Musical career
Tongue is especially known for his live freestyle ability. He represented Australia in the "Battle 4 Supremacy" competition/DVD against New Zealand in 2005 and won the Revolver MC battle the same year. Tongue's songs have been placed on rotation by national Australian youth broadcaster Triple J.
Tongue was signed by independent Sydney record label Elefant Traks following the submission of the Bad Education EP to the Marrickville-based label—the EP was a result of the Revolver victory and featured the production skills of the Bag Raiders (Jack Glass and Chris Stacey), who were former schoolmates of the MC. Elefant Traks, managed by Tim Levinson (Urthboy) from Australian hip hop collective The Herd, explained to Tongue that a record contract would be arranged on the proviso that the MC also recorded an album for the label.

Tip of the tongue
The tip-of-the-tongue (TOT) phenomenon is the failure to retrieve a word from memory, combined with partial recall and the feeling that retrieval is imminent. The phenomenon's name comes from the saying, "It's on the tip of my tongue." The tip of the tongue phenomenon reveals that lexical access occurs in stages.
People experiencing the tip-of-the-tongue phenomenon can often recall one or more features of the target word, such as the first letter, its syllabic stress, and words similar in sound and/or meaning. Individuals report a feeling of being seized by the state, feeling something like mild anguish while searching for the word, and a sense of relief when the word is found. While many aspects of the tip-of-the-tongue state remain unclear, there are two major competing explanations for its occurrence, the direct-access view and the inferential view. The direct-access view posits that the state occurs when memory strength is not enough to recall an item, but is strong enough to trigger the state. The inferential view claims that TOTs aren't completely based on inaccessible, yet activated targets; rather they arise when the rememberer tries to piece together different clues about the word. Emotional-induced retrieval often causes more TOT experiences than an emotionally neutral retrieval, such as asking where a famous icon was assassinated rather than simply asking the capital city of a state. Emotional TOT experiences also have a longer retrieval time than non-emotional TOT experiences. The cause of this is unknown but possibilities include using a different retrieval strategy when having an emotional TOT experience rather than a non-emotional TOT experience, fluency at the time of retrieval, and strength of memory.

JUPITER, FL – In a landmark neurobiology study, scientists from Scripps Research have discovered a memory gating system that employs the neurotransmitter dopamine to direct transient forgetting, a temporary lapse of memory which spontaneously returns.
The study adds a pin to scientists’ evolving map of how learning, memory and active forgetting work, says Scripps Research Neuroscience Professor Ron Davis, PhD.
“This is the first time a mechanism has been discovered for transient memory lapse,” Davis says. “There’s every reason to believe, because of conservation biology, that a similar mechanism exists in humans as well.”
The study, “Dopamine-based mechanism for transient forgetting,” appears Wednesday in the journal Nature.
Everyone has experienced transient forgetting. A name sits on the tip of our tongue, but resurfaces only after a meeting. We walk into a room and forget why we entered – until we leave. Annoying, to be sure. But does it represent a mental glitch, or is absentmindedness a feature of a normal brain? Was the elusive memory erased and somehow restored, or merely hidden for a time? Exactly how transient forgetting worked was unknown until now.
To derive an answer, Davis’ team worked in the common fruit fly, a model favored by neurobiologists for decades due to its relatively simple brain structure, ease of study and translatability to more complex animals.
The team put their flies through a series of training exercises, teaching them to associate an odor with an unpleasant foot shock. They then watched as several interfering stimuli, such as a blue light or a puff of air, distracted the flies so they forgot the odor’s negative association, temporarily. Interestingly, stronger stimulation led to longer lasting periods of forgetting.
Additional biochemical studies revealed a single pair of dopamine-releasing neurons in the flies, called PPL1-α2α’2, which directed the transient forgetting. Dopamine sent from other neurons didn’t have the same effect. The neurons activated dopamine receptors called DAMB on axons extending from neurons in the memory-processing center of the fruit fly brain, called its mushroom body.
Activation of the transient forgetting circuit did not erase the flies’ long-term memory recall, suggesting that transient forgetting doesn’t affect permanent, consolidated memory traces, or engrams, that are acquired over time, Davis says.
Intriguingly, they found the flies’ memory performance was restored after the transient forgetting period lifted, says the paper’s first author, John Martin Sabandal, a Scripps Research graduate student, who worked with staff scientist Jacob Berry, PhD, at the team’s lab in Jupiter, Florida.
“Could we perform better if certain memories are suppressed over others – could we learn or adapt to situations better? Nobody knows. Those are the type of questions that will be explored in the future,” Sabandal says. “We found, provisionally, there is a potential memory reserve that is just unable to be expressed at a particular moment.”
The mechanisms underlying long-term memory acquisition and consolidation have been thoroughly studied over the past 40 years, Davis says, but forgetting has been overlooked until recently. It’s proving to be a fascinating field. In 2012 Davis’ group found a mechanism directing permanent forgetting, finding it is an ongoing, active process, one apparently needed for healthy brain function.
“You can imagine that we have thousands of memories that occur every day in our lifetime, and the brain does not have the capability of remembering, or encoding, all of those memories. So there is a need to erase those memories that are irrelevant to our existence and our daily lives,” Davis says.
Taken together, it’s increasingly clear that much of what we think of as memory loss is not a result of broken connections or age-related decline, but an important feature, one necessary for survival, Davis says. Much more work lies ahead, he adds.
“We now know that there is a specific receptor in the memory center that receives the transient forgetting signal from dopamine. But we don’t yet know what happens downstream. What does that receptor do to the physiology of the neuron that temporarily blocks memory retrieval? That’s the major next goal, to understand how this block in retrieval occurs through the activation of this dopamine receptor,” Davis says. “We are just at the very beginning of understanding how the brain causes transient forgetting.”

I'm going to divide this answer into two parts: One is for those things that you never properly memorized, things you never applied any mnemonic system, you never applied a system at all. It's just something you may have read sometime or a song you might have heard or a picture you may have seen. And what's happening is there's a lot of scientific literature about it, indeed. It's the TOT - tip of tongue syndrome - and you can find thousands and thousands of pages about it.
Technically what's happening, I can't tell you. But the bottom line what's happening is you didn't really know it well to begin with as a rule. What can you do about it? All kinds of theories, I can only suggest one. If something is on the tip of your tongue, and you can't spit it out, back away from it, relax a little bit.
Another theory that you're going to hear about is clench your left fist. Some scientists will say that what that does is stimulate some neurons that are going left wrist to the right side of the brain and all of that material that I'm not really sure about: I'm not a scientist. But I do think that the very act of clenching your fist takes your mind away of that terribly troubling sense of the tip of tongue syndrome and may relieve it. Give it a try. See what works for you.

Where you see a strawberry tongue or a red coloured tongue and the most commonly asked question for a red patch on the tongue is when there is immune system like a fever or malaise , there is a velvety red patch and that is erythroplakia, which is a precancerous condition and this particular condition progresses into cancer very fast and has very high incidence of developing into a cancer and that condition should be consulted with a dentist or an oral and maxillofacial surgeon. This particular patch if it exists more than 2 weeks, then you have to visit a dentist. There are other anatomical variations called as the geographic tongue or there are certain other conditions called as canker sore, you have a yellow white spot and a red ring around it and that also goes away once the systemic condition goes away. So there are several reasons and several conditions that must be understood, diagnosed properly and given the right treatment for.

JUPITER, FL – In a landmark neurobiology study, scientists from Scripps Research have discovered a memory gating system that employs the neurotransmitter dopamine to direct transient forgetting, a temporary lapse of memory which spontaneously returns.
The study adds a pin to scientists’ evolving map of how learning, memory and active forgetting work, says Scripps Research Neuroscience Professor Ron Davis, PhD.
“This is the first time a mechanism has been discovered for transient memory lapse,” Davis says. “There’s every reason to believe, because of conservation biology, that a similar mechanism exists in humans as well.”
The study, “Dopamine-based mechanism for transient forgetting,” appears Wednesday in the journal Nature.
Everyone has experienced transient forgetting. A name sits on the tip of our tongue, but resurfaces only after a meeting. We walk into a room and forget why we entered – until we leave. Annoying, to be sure. But does it represent a mental glitch, or is absentmindedness a feature of a normal brain? Was the elusive memory erased and somehow restored, or merely hidden for a time? Exactly how transient forgetting worked was unknown until now.
To derive an answer, Davis’ team worked in the common fruit fly, a model favored by neurobiologists for decades due to its relatively simple brain structure, ease of study and translatability to more complex animals.
The team put their flies through a series of training exercises, teaching them to associate an odor with an unpleasant foot shock. They then watched as several interfering stimuli, such as a blue light or a puff of air, distracted the flies so they forgot the odor’s negative association, temporarily. Interestingly, stronger stimulation led to longer lasting periods of forgetting.
Additional biochemical studies revealed a single pair of dopamine-releasing neurons in the flies, called PPL1-α2α’2, which directed the transient forgetting. Dopamine sent from other neurons didn’t have the same effect. The neurons activated dopamine receptors called DAMB on axons extending from neurons in the memory-processing center of the fruit fly brain, called its mushroom body.
Activation of the transient forgetting circuit did not erase the flies’ long-term memory recall, suggesting that transient forgetting doesn’t affect permanent, consolidated memory traces, or engrams, that are acquired over time, Davis says.
Intriguingly, they found the flies’ memory performance was restored after the transient forgetting period lifted, says the paper’s first author, John Martin Sabandal, a Scripps Research graduate student, who worked with staff scientist Jacob Berry, PhD, at the team’s lab in Jupiter, Florida.
“Could we perform better if certain memories are suppressed over others – could we learn or adapt to situations better? Nobody knows. Those are the type of questions that will be explored in the future,” Sabandal says. “We found, provisionally, there is a potential memory reserve that is just unable to be expressed at a particular moment.”
The mechanisms underlying long-term memory acquisition and consolidation have been thoroughly studied over the past 40 years, Davis says, but forgetting has been overlooked until recently. It’s proving to be a fascinating field. In 2012 Davis’ group found a mechanism directing permanent forgetting, finding it is an ongoing, active process, one apparently needed for healthy brain function.
“You can imagine that we have thousands of memories that occur every day in our lifetime, and the brain does not have the capability of remembering, or encoding, all of those memories. So there is a need to erase those memories that are irrelevant to our existence and our daily lives,” Davis says.
Taken together, it’s increasingly clear that much of what we think of as memory loss is not a result of broken connections or age-related decline, but an important feature, one necessary for survival, Davis says. Much more work lies ahead, he adds.
“We now know that there is a specific receptor in the memory center that receives the transient forgetting signal from dopamine. But we don’t yet know what happens downstream. What does that receptor do to the physiology of the neuron that temporarily blocks memory retrieval? That’s the major next goal, to understand how this block in retrieval occurs through the activation of this dopamine receptor,” Davis says. “We are just at the very beginning of understanding how the brain causes transient forgetting.”
The study, “Dopamine-based mechanism for transient forgetting,” was supported by the National Institutes of Health, grant 5R35NS098224 and F31MH123022.

My name is Barry Reitman. I'm the author of "Secrets, Tips and Tricks of a Powerful Memory," and I'd like to discuss the question of what happens when something is on the tip of your tongue. It happens to all of us. I'm going to divide this answer into two parts: One is for those things that you never properly memorized, things you never applied any mnemonic system, you never applied a system at all. It's just something you may have read sometime or a song you might have heard or a picture you may have seen. And what's happening is there's a lot of scientific literature about it, indeed. It's the TOT - tip of tongue syndrome - and you can find thousands and thousands of pages about it.
Technically what's happening, I can't tell you. But the bottom line what's happening is you didn't really know it well to begin with as a rule. What can you do about it? All kinds of theories, I can only suggest one. If something is on the tip of your tongue, and you can't spit it out, back away from it, relax a little bit.
Another theory that you're going to hear about is clench your left fist. Some scientists will say that what that does is stimulate some neurons that are going left wrist to the right side of the brain and all of that material that I'm not really sure about: I'm not a scientist. But I do think that the very act of clenching your fist takes your mind away of that terribly troubling sense of the tip of tongue syndrome and may relieve it. Give it a try. See what works for you.

There are several causes for small red spots on the tongue. It can vary from small spots, large patches and also depends on the location where it is for example if there are small spots and they are spread over the various parts of the tongue, it can be an inflamed papilla, which are nothing but taste buds So if one ingests something very hot or extremely spicy, it gets raised and inflamed which goes on its own, so it is not a big problem. there are other conditions which causes red patches milk there are viral condition like Kawasaki ’s disease, which is seen in children and it is a viral condition and it can be solved. It can be scarlet fever. Where you see a strawberry tongue or a red coloured tongue and the most commonly asked question for a red patch on the tongue is when there is immune system like a fever or malaise , there is a velvety red patch and that is erythroplakia, which is a precancerous condition and this particular condition progresses into cancer very fast and has very high incidence of developing into a cancer and that condition should be consulted with a dentist or an oral and maxillofacial surgeon. This particular patch if it exists more than 2 weeks, then you have to visit a dentist. There are other anatomical variations called as the geographic tongue or there are certain other conditions called as canker sore, you have a yellow white spot and a red ring around it and that also goes away once the systemic condition goes away. So there are several reasons and several conditions that must be understood, diagnosed properly and given the right treatment for.

The Tongue
Xannon Shirley, better known by the stage name The Tongue, is a musical artist from Sydney, Australia, and is signed to Australian independent label Elefant Traks. He has released two EPs (Bad Education and "Victorious Remixes"), four albums (Shock And Awe, Alternative Energy, Surrender To Victory and Hard Feelings) and three mixtapes (Redux,The Tongue Is Dead and "The Sextape).
Biography
The Tongue is a MC/songwriter from Newtown, Sydney, New South Wales, Australia.
Musical career
Tongue is especially known for his live freestyle ability. He represented Australia in the "Battle 4 Supremacy" competition/DVD against New Zealand in 2005 and won the Revolver MC battle the same year. Tongue's songs have been placed on rotation by national Australian youth broadcaster Triple J.
Tongue was signed by independent Sydney record label Elefant Traks following the submission of the Bad Education EP to the Marrickville-based label—the EP was a result of the Revolver victory and featured the production skills of the Bag Raiders (Jack Glass and Chris Stacey), who were former schoolmates of the MC. Elefant Traks, managed by Tim Levinson (Urthboy) from Australian hip hop collective The Herd, explained to Tongue that a record contract would be arranged on the proviso that the MC also recorded an album for the label.
