Timber framing and "post-and-beam" construction are methods of building with heavy timbers rather than dimensional lumber such as 2"x4"s. Traditional timber framing is the method of creating structures using heavy squared-off and carefully fitted and joined timbers with joints secured by large wooden pegs (larger versions of the mortise and tenon joints in furniture). It is commonplace in wooden buildings from the 19th century and earlier. The method comes from making things out of logs and tree trunks without modern high tech saws to cut lumber from the starting material stock. Using axes, adzes, and draw knives, hand-powered augerdrill bits (bit and brace), and laborious woodworking, artisans or farmers could gradually assemble a building capable of bearing heavy weight without excessive use of interior space given over to vertical support posts. Since this building method has been used for thousands of years in many parts of the world, there are many styles of historic framing. These styles are often categorized by the type of foundation, walls, how and where the beams intersect, the use of curved timbers, and the roof framing details. Three basic types of timber frames in English-speaking countries are the box frame, cruck frame, and aisled frame.

In both our in-person and Online Purely Post-And-Beam timber framing courses, we use a 24' x 24’ Class Timber Frame to teach you all the basic joints you will need to build your own timber frame structure. Raising our Japanese timber frame, no machines, just one mans hands, ASMR
Finally time to raise our Japanese Timber frame house extension. Due to the demure nature of this style of framing, I was able to assemble the entire frame alone with just my two hands, no mechanical advantage such as lifting shears, tackle blocks, cranes, or hoists of any kind were needed. Having worked with much heavier framing styles, this is a joy!

Building a Timber Frame Cabin - hand tools only
In September of 2019 I partook in a timber framing and half-timbering with wattle and daub workshop organised by the Museum for Older Techniques in Grimbergen, Belgium.
Three teams of seven people worked together with two intructors (Ante Corthals and Mathijs Huyghebaert) on the building using only hand tools and traditional techniques over a span of eleven days in total, each group working five days individually.
Starting from felled timber, the proces of hewing a beam, laying out a joint and making it were excercised. This finally resulted in raising the complete timber framed structure after about nine days of work.
This frame was to be half timbered by filling the voids between the beams with wattle and daud. This proces was demonstrated by local expert in the matter, Gerrit Van den ...

One of the more complicated joints in this frame is the Thru Mortise, which has multiple slants and angles that help lock the beam & post together. In this video, Gaius & Gabe will walk through the whole joint using a full-scale model, explaining the best order for cutting an accurate thru mortise, and how it fits together with its corresponding Thru Tenon.

This proces was demonstrated by local expert in the matter, Gerrit Van den Dries.
After the workshop was completed, the remaining walls were filled with wattle and daub and the remaining portions of the roof were covered with wooden shingles on a later date.
The result is a beautiful half-timbered, timber framed cabin which holds the museums winnowing machine and is a great addition to the site.
Thanks for watching,

Here are two pieces of feedback we think really sum up why we created this online course:
“…thank you for finally putting this online. I am a busy working mom without the opportunity to travel to Maine…I’ve been lurking on your website for years hoping to squeeze a class into the family vacation schedule, but have been out of luck. This will be great! I can’t wait to get started!”
“...I am very excited to see and participate in the online course. Just watching the teaser videos I gleaned some gems that I somehow missed when I took the in person Post and Beam course. I think both methods will have their benefits...so glad I was able to take the in person class (interacting with the staff and building relationships with like minded folks is amazing!) but really looking forward to seeing what you all will be presenting with the online format."
We really appreciate the votes of confidence on this new way to teach timber framing.

If you are planning to build and trying to pick what style of framing is best for you, unfortunately, there is no simple answer you can reason your way through a decision by knowing more. In this clip, Pat Hennin provides a series of points.

In both our in-person and Online Purely Post-And-Beam timber framing courses, we use a 24' x 24’ Class Timber Frame to teach you all the basic joints you will need to build your own timber frame structure.

Part one of the Tiny Timber Frame Workshop Build. The workshop will be 10’x12’. Metal roofing, double doors, and Shou Sugi Ban siding.
The concrete pier foundation was made using 8” diameter form tubes. Each pier is dug 2’ below ground level.
The long sills in this video have a mortise on each end and a single mortise in the center of the sill that will accept the tie joist. The floor joists drop in to the housing cut every 2 ft down the sill.
Next video, we will cut the tenons in the short sills, and assemble the base of the timber frame. Thanks for watching!

Thanks for watching,
Marcel

The development will also support sustainable living, with the homes constructed of timber frame and all with air source heat pumps and solar PV panels.
