Tourette Syndrome: What Makes People Tic?
Tourette Syndrome in popular culture is often simplified to a poorly timed foul mouth, but that’s only a small part of the story—or sometimes not part of the story at all.

Having Tics in Public can be Difficult! 😅 #tourettesyndrome #disability #awareness
I’ve had “noticeable” and “disruptive” and “offensive” tick for around four years now, to the point that these stop me from going out in public for quite awhile during the worst months 🙈
I’ve gradually adapted and with lifestyle changes, my tics have actually reduced to a lesser severity most of the time… but on days when I still need to do things like travelling on the tube or going in a very busy place, it’s still really difficult and can feel embarrassing 🫠
We shouldn’t have to feel embarrassed of our text, but unfortunately the general public aren’t very understanding - being stared at is just an everyday occurrence for people with tics, and for some people it’s even an everyday occurrence being shouted out or kicked out of places! 👎🏻
but luckily, this tube trip was pretty uneventfu...

The Man With One of the UK's Most Severe Cases of Tourette’s | This Morning
Subscribe now for more! http://bit.ly/1JM41yF
When Ryan Stevens was just 15, his life changed forever. He developed tics, began having seizures known as 'tic attacks' and at the age of 21, was diagnosed with Tourette’s Syndrome. Ryan is now considered to have one of the most severe cases in the UK. He joins Holly and Phillip, alongside occupational psychologist Nancy Doyle, to talk about how his condition affects his daily life.
Apologies in advance if you find anything offensive during this clip, however, we think it is important to allow Ryan to speak freely.

but luckily, this tube trip was pretty uneventful apart from the staring and weird looks we got from people! so grateful to @lauren_wyatt_2410 for supporting me on this trip (and making me laugh) 🧡

**Title: Understanding Tic Disorders: Causes, Types, and Diagnosis**
Tic disorders are neurological conditions characterized by sudden, repetitive movements or vocal sounds that are difficult to control. These tics can be either motor (physical) or vocal and may range from mild to severe, sometimes interfering with daily activities.
### Causes:
The exact cause of tic disorders is not fully understood, but research suggests a combination of genetic and environmental factors. Abnormalities in certain areas of the brain, including the basal ganglia, which controls motor movements, and neurotransmitter imbalances (dopamine) are thought to play a role. Stress, anxiety, or excitement can also trigger or worsen tics.
### Types:
1. **Transient Tic Disorder**: Tics lasting for less than a year. Common in children, often resolves without treatment.
2. **Chronic Tic Disorder**: Tics (motor or vocal) that persist for more than a year. They are more stable and less likely to disappear on their own.
3. **Tourette Syndrome**: The most severe form, involving both motor and vocal tics that have been present for over a year. It's often associated with other conditions like ADHD or OCD.
### Diagnosis:
Diagnosing tic disorders usually involves a clinical evaluation of symptoms. A neurologist or psychiatrist will observe the tics' frequency, duration, and type. There are no specific tests, but sometimes MRI or CT scans are done to rule out other neurological conditions. A detailed family and medical history is also important for diagnosis.
Treatment often involves behavioral therapies or medication, though many mild cases don't require intervention.
This brief overview of tic disorders highlights the importance of understanding the causes, types, and diagnostic approaches to managing this condition effectively.
