After Napoleon I had conquered and then lost Europe, France went through multiple revolutions. In 1851, Napoleons nephew and French president Louis-Napoléon Bonaparte took control and in 1852 crowned himself Emperor Napoleon III. The new French Empire wanted to regain the glory of Napoleon's uncle and together with his wife Empress Eugenie he ruled a state known for lavish balls and spending.

Philip Nord on “France 1940: Defending the Republic”

This is a production by the National History Center in cooperation with the Woodrow Wilson Center’s History and Public Policy Program in Washington DC
France suffered a crushing defeat in 1940, and its democratic constitution was then set aside to make way for the authoritarian regime of Vichy. A classic explanation chalks up this series of events to decadence, to France’s moral failings as a nation. Philip Nord argues, however, that the defeat was contingent, the result of poor military decision-making on the part of the army brass, and that the turn to authoritarianism thereafter was the result of a betrayal by the nation’s military and administrative elites, more interested in national regeneration than in democracy. Does such an analysis alter how France’s history in this period is to be understood?
Philip Nord is the Rosengarten Professor of Modern and Contemporary History at Princeton University, where he has taught since 1981. He is the author of five books on French history since the Revolution, among them The Republican Moment: Struggles for Democracy in Nineteenth-Century France (Harvard University Press, 1995), France’s New Deal: From the Thirties to the Postwar Era (Princeton University Press, 2010), and most recently France 1940: Defending the Republic (Yale University Press, 2015).
The seminar meets at 4:00 p.m. at the Woodrow Wilson Center, 6th Floor Moynihan Board Room, Ronald Reagan Building, Federal Triangle Metro Stop.
The seminar is sponsored jointly by the National History Center of the American Historical Association and the Wilson Center. It meets weekly during the academic year. See www.nationalhistorycenter.org for the schedule, speakers, topics, and dates as well as webcasts and podcasts. The seminar thanks the Society for Historians of American Foreign Relations and the George Washington University History Department for their support. Reservations requested because of limited seating.

The time between the French defeat against Prussia in the Franco-Prussian War and the outbreak of the First World War is often described as the Belle Époque. But it certainly was a turbulent time for one of the major world powers too.

What’s the best historical analogue for the American political situation today? Often, pundits will compare our current age of rising polarization and increasing political violence to the era preceding the American Civil War. If they’re alarmed and looking for a European analogy, sometimes they’ll point to Weimar Germany. But another point of comparison from prewar Europe might be more apt: the French Third Republic, from the late 19th century leading up to World War II.Lawfare Managing Editor Jacob Schulz and Quinta Jurecic spoke with John Ganz, who writes the Substack newsletter Unpopular Front and is working on a book about American politics in the 1990s. He’s written in depth about the political crises roiling the Third Republic, from the Dreyfus Affair to February 6, 1934—a violent ri...

The political situation in Israel during the years since 2009 (Netanyahu return to power), reflects a major transition, actually generating a Third Republic in Israel, as evident in the results of Israel’s seven last general elections (2009, 2013, 2015, 2019a, 2019b, 2020, 2021 and 2022), which revealed the deepening power of the Israeli right and its transformation into a dominant bloc in Israeli politics. This followed three decades that began in 1977 with the historical victory of the right-wing Likud party and Menachem Begin over the Mapai socialist party that had retained electoral success since the creation of the State of Israel, a situation described by many as the Israel’s "Second Republic", in the eve of this ‘second republic’ Israel succeeded in keeping a balance between the occupation in one hand, and the legislation of a set of basic laws that were considered by many to be a fundamental elements of the emerging constitution in Israel..
The political situation in Israel over the past years, 2009-2023, can be best explained as a right wing 'dominant bloc system'. Although Israel has had no single dominant party, the Likud has emerged as the clear center of a right-wing dominant bloc, with various smaller parties orbiting around it. This situation both bolsters and reflects Likud’s success in changing the Israeli landscape – leaving their mark on a deep change\ deterioration on the status and situation of Human Rights in Israel proper and in all the territory that are controlled by Israel (The Land from the Sea to the Jordan Valley- This was reflected in a continuance efforts to change the status of the Israel Supreme Court as an independent branch of power, right wing monitoring and supervision over academic institutions, civil society organizations, and a continence efforts for changing and re-conceptualizations of patriotism, delegitimizing the left, human rights movements, and abolishing the prospects for a peaceful solution for the Israeli-Palestinian conflict.
Professor As’ad Ghanem (PhD), is a lecturer at the School of Political Science, University of Haifa. Currently a visiting professor at the Frankel Center for Judaic Studies at University of Michigan. His research agenda and work has explored the legal, institutional and political conditions in ethnic states, democratization in the Middle East, fundamentalism, Palestinian political orientations, the political structure of the Palestinian National Movement, and the future of the Israeli-Palestinian conflict. His recent books are: Palestinians in Israel: The Politics of Faith after Oslo w/ Mohanad Mustafa (2018, Cambridge University Press), Israel in the Post Oslo Era – Prospects for Conflict and Reconciliation with the Palestinians w/Mohanad Mostafa & Salim Brake, (2019, Routledge); and The Palestinian Question after Oslo. He’s written in depth about the political crises roiling the Third Republic, from the Dreyfus Affair to February 6, 1934—a violent riot outside the French National Assembly, which has striking echoes in January 6. So why is France a more apt comparison than Germany or Italy? What can studying the Third Republic, and February 6, tell us about January 6 and the rise of an American far right? And what might we learn from the striking differences between how French civil society responded to February 6, as opposed to the more muted American response to a similar riot almost 90 years later?

I Investigated South Africa's Whites-Only Town
In this documentary, we take you inside South Africa’s whites-only town, Orania.
Orania is home to around 3,000 residents and if you want to live there, you have to meet certain requirements. The first and most important is that you have to be a White Afrikaner. Afrikaners are descendants of Dutch settlers who played a key role in establishing and enforcing apartheid. Additionally, residents must be Calvinist Christians, have a clean criminal record, and exclusively speak Afrikaans within the enclave.
Despite its size, Orania is a self-sufficient community with its own local government, currency, flag, college, farms, bank, airstrip, and their own rules. The community's growth and ambitions are notable, yet it remains deeply controversial. Critics label Orania as racist, while supporters...

We tried KFC in South Africa #kfc
👇 After @kfcwhat are the biggest fast food chains in #SouthAfrica?
KFC holds 24.3% of the fast food market by sales in the country, according to Business Tech. Its closest rival, McDonald’s, represents 13% followed by Nando’s (6.5%), Debonairs Pizza (4.7%), and Wimpy (4.1%).
As we traveled through South Africa, there was no denying that #KFC was the leading #fastfood chain in the country. We saw them in any city we passed through, and many of them attracted lines out the door.
When we saw one at the Cape Town Airport, we knew it was our final chance to give it a try. As expected, there were many items we don't see in the US and some classics as well. We tried a combo that included many menu items. Watch the video to see what we thought, and drop a follow if you enjoy what you see!

For decades, South Africa was under apartheid: a series of laws that divided people by race. Then, in the 1990s, those laws were dismantled. But many of the barriers they created continue to divide South Africans by skin color - which in turn determines their quality of life, access to jobs, and wealth. Racial division was built into the fabric of cities throughout South Africa, and it still hasn't been uprooted.
That's partly because, while apartheid was the culmination of South Africa's racial divisions, it wasn't the beginning of them. That story starts closer to the 1800s, when the British built a network of railroads that transformed the region's economy into one that excluded most Black people -- and then made that exclusion the law.

Critics label Orania as racist, while supporters argue it is a place for cultural preservation and self-determination. This ongoing debate highlights the complexities of Orania's existence in modern-day South Africa.
I want to find out the truth about Orania and see it for myself. What drives people to live in such a secluded and controversial place? How do they balance their ideals with modern South Africa? By making the 9-hour journey from Cape Town, I hope to answer these questions, meet the locals, and share the real story of this unique community.
Thanks to Orania's team for providing some extra footage.
