How To Direct a Play | Theatre Directing
How do you approach a play as a Director? Is the playwright supreme, or is the director most important? In any case, if you are a director, the Number One thing to do is to figure out exactly what the play is about. Look at the content and decide what the theme is. Style must always come from Theme, not vice versa. If you impose your own style on the play, you are playing God. This in not your job. This is one of the (few) rewards available to the Playwright, so be nice to them. Direct your actors, don't try to re-write the play.

Clint Dyer, recently took on the role of Deputy Artistic Director at the National Theatre, after having a successful career as an actor, director and writer. Clint was Primarily an actor but has recently taken on more directing and writing roles. As an actor Clints credits include SUS (Young Vic), Ma Raineys Black Bottom (National theatre), The Kid Stays in the Picture (Royal Court/ Complicite). Clint has directed The Big Life (Apollo-West End and Stratford East), Kingston 14 (Stratford East), The Westbridge (Royal Court). As writer-director theatre includes, Death of England (National Theatre), Sylvia Plath (The Royal Court) and as writer co-director theatre includes The Happy Tragedy of Being Woke (Complicité).
