Set in the Bronx in 1963, the film follows a gang of Italian-American teenagers known as the Wanderers and their ongoing power struggle with a rival gang called Fordham Baldies.
After an advance screening,The Wanderers premiered on July 13, 1979, to mostly positive reviews. The film was a financial success, grossing $23 million at the worldwide box office. The Wanderers is a novel by Ingrid Rimland published in 1977 loosely based upon her own experiences from growing up in a Mennonite community in the Ukraine. Rimland wanted to write a novel about her people, and The Wanderers tells the story of the plight of Mennonite women caught in the social upheavals of revolution and war. The novel traces the decimation of a pacifist people during the Russian Revolution, anarchy, famine, the Stalinist purges, escape from the Ukraine, and eventual resettlement in the rain forests of Paraguay.
The novel remains Rimland's most acclaimed book. It earned her the California Literature Medal Award for best fiction in 1977.

The Wanderers (1979) - ''Leave the kid alone!''
A new guy arrives in town and lays waste to the feared Baldies in the underrated gang film THE WANDERERS.
The best moment is when Perry and Terror, the neighborhood bully, size each other up in a spaghetti western-style stare-down.
Do you think Terror backed down? Or was he just "waiting for the right moment", as Turkey put it?

The Wanderers (1979) - ''Leave the kid alone!''
Set against the urban jungle of 1963 New York's gangland subculture, this coming of age teenage movie is set around the Italian gang the Wanderers. Slight comedy, slight High School angst and every bit entertaining with its classic 1950's Rock n' Roll soundtrack such as "Walk Like a Man", "Big Girls Don't Cry" by The Four Seasons and "My Boyfriend's Back" by The Angels. Focusing around a football game where the different gangs play with and against each other, then at its grand finale, come together in a mass of union to defend their honour and their turf. Nostalgic stuff and above all a Rock n' Roll retrospective on a grand musical era. Timeless.
