Bonus Edition Introduction by George Kupczak of the AT&T Archives and History Center.
A non-linear documentary about operators - male and female, but mostly female - at their work, and describing their work and the type of customers they encounter. A fascinating inside look at the skills needed by operators in dealing with the public. Shot in the style of a Maysles- or Weisman-type documentary. There are clips from a 1913 D.W. Griffith silent film, Telephone Girl and the Lady, at the beginning and end.
"The operator's job, despite tensions and aggravations, is one which consists primarily of human contact and as such, carries rich rewards."
Cox went on to direct television in Hollywood and also documentaries for PBS...

The Making of Information Age: Enfield Telephone Exchange
This film explores the story of the Enfield telephone exchange and the role of female operators in the development of telephone networks. The Enfield exchange was one of the last to be converted from manual to automatic switching. After closure, the Science Museum preserved a section of the switchboard which is now on display in the new Information Age gallery along with stories of the women who worked on the exchange.

Being A Telephone Operator in 1979
To support my efforts to create more clips please donate to me at www.patreon.com/allinaday. Back in 1979 when I filmed this, AT&T was very proud of their “center” in New York City. The newest technology they said. Some of the women looked like they liked it or tolerated it, and most of the men wouldn't talk to us. Can you imagine when a human voice knew your name on the phone! These are outtakes from my PBS documentary titled The Information Society.
