Woody Allen originally was asked to direct, but he was more interested in playing the role of Lewis and declined the offer. Twenty years later, he would be cast as Lewis in the 1996 television adaptation.
Initially, Bob Hope and Bing Crosby were proposed for the leads, but Simon was opposed to the idea, as he felt the roles required Jewishcomedians. Several actors, including Groucho Marx and Phil Silvers were considered and the roles eventually were given to real-life vaudevillian veterans Red Skelton and Jack Benny.
The Sunshine Boys is a play by Neil Simon that was produced on Broadway in 1972 and later adapted for film and television.
Plot
The play's protagonists are Al Lewis and Willie Clark. Lewis and Clark were once a successful vaudevillian comedy duo known as the Sunshine Boys. During the later years of their 43 year run, animosity between the partners grew to the point where they ceased to speak with each other. Eleven years prior to the events of the play, Al retired from show business, leaving Willie struggling to keep his career afloat.
Willie, now an old man struggling with memory loss, reluctantly accepts an offer from his nephew Ben, a talent agent, to reunite with Al for a CBS special on the history of comedy. Willie and Al meet in Willie's apartment to rehearse their classic doctor and tax collector sketch. The reunion gets off to a bad start, with the two getting into heated arguments over various aspects of the performance. However, thanks to the urging of Al's daughter, the two decide to go through with the performance.
The Sunshine Boys is a 1996 American comedy film directed by John Erman and based on the play, The Sunshine Boys by Neil Simon about two legendary (and cranky) comics brought together for a reunion and revival of their famous act. The film stars Woody Allen and Peter Falk as the comedy duo alongside Sarah Jessica Parker.
Plot
Al Lewis (Woody Allen) and Willy Clark (Peter Falk) are two old comedians who were once a popular vaudeville comedy act known as "Lewis and Clark" and also called the Sunshine Boys. After 43 years together, they parted ways 11 years ago on unfriendly terms and have not spoken to each other since then. A reunion is planned for a major network special on the history of comedy.
Production
In 1995, Simon adapted his play for a Hallmark Entertainment production. His teleplay updated the setting and made the two comedians the product of the early days of television, the medium in which the playwright got his start. Unlike the film adaptation, although they are portrayed as cantankerous, their animosity was not as severe as Matthau's and Burns' characters' bad relationship.

The Sunshine Boys 1975 HD 7 TV Spots Trailer Walter Matthau George Burns Richard Benjamin
A 16mm print from my collection that I find an interesting one. There are 7 TV spots, ranging from 30 to 60 seconds each. These mini TV trailers are not your typical trailers. While some took the typical approach, others I find unique. Clips of famous comedians such as Alan King, Soupy Sales, Milton Berle and others mentioning their favorite comedians, clips from other movies and people just laughing are used to sell the film. While this approach doesn't really tell you anything about the film itself, it is an atypical approach.
The color is fading on this print as is typical. The film transfer is cropped as minimal as possible so you may see some edge.
Walter Matthau, George Burns, Richard Benjamin, Lee Meredith, Carol Arthur, Rosetta LeNoire.
