The county was archaically called Downshire. It borders County Antrim to the north, the Irish Sea to the east and south, County Armagh to the west, and County Louth across Carlingford Lough to the southwest. In the east of the county is Strangford Lough and the Ards Peninsula. The largest town is Bangor, on the northeast coast. Three other large towns and cities are on its border: Newry lies on the western border with County Armagh, while Lisburn and Belfast lie on the northern border with County Antrim. Down contains both the southernmost point of Northern Ireland (Cranfield Point) and the easternmost point of Ireland (Burr Point).
At the by-election in 1771 following Ward's creation as Baron Bangor
Elections in the 1760s
At the 1768 general election Roger Hall and Bernard Ward were elected unopposed.
Election in the 1610s
"In the co. of Down, May-day was the county court day for the election, which the sheriff held at Newry, at which day the sheriff proceeding to the election, moved the freeholders to choose Sir Richard Wingfield and Sir James Hamilton, being recommended to him by the Lord Deputy; but the natives named Sir Arthur Magenisse and Rowland Savage; whereupon all the British freeholders, being 131, cried “Hamilton and Montgomery”, omitting Wingfield; and the Irish, to the number of 101, cried “Magenisse and Savage”. Exception being presently taken to divers of the British for want of freehold, 14 were examined on oath by the sheriff and deposed they were freeholders, and thereupon the sheriff returned Hamilton and Montgomery; to which some of the Irish made objections, which were found partly untrue, and partly frivolous."
A naked woman kneels by the water; one foot is in the water, one foot is on the land. Above her head a star shines out. In each hand she holds a jug. From one jug she pours a liquid into the water. From the other jug she pours a liquid onto the land. In other, older decks, a woman (or sometimes even a man) is simply looking and sometimes gesturing at a large star in the sky.
The main character of the third series of JoJo's Bizarre Adventure, Jotaro Kujo, is the user of Star Platinum, a powerful Stand that possesses super-strength and super-speed. It was named after this tarot card.
The Star was Hong Kong's first tabloid newspaper, founded in 1965 and closed down in 1984. It was founded by Graham Jenkins, an Australian journalist, who was the newspaper's editor until 1979. After the 1967 riots, Graham decided to add a Chinese language edition. The newspaper was printed and published by Consolidated Newspapers Ltd. When the newspaper was closed, 120 employees lost their jobs virtually overnight. The news came as a shock because the newspaper had increased its readership in the years before the closing.
Reporters included Alfred Lee (Editor), San (Women's page), Kenneth Ko, Christine Chow, Christina Xu (who later worked for the South China Morning Post). Photographers included Norman Lam, Norman Lau, Thomas Chan.
Cromdale (Scottish Gaelic:Crombail) is a village in Strathspey, in the Highland council area of Scotland, and one of the ancient parishes which formed the combined ecclesiastical (later civil) parish of "Cromdale, Inverallan and Advie" in Morayshire.
The present small, growing village of Cromdale lies on either side of where the A95 road crosses Cromdale Burn, between Grantown-on-Spey and Aberlour; this bridge is about 500 metres south of the confluence of the burn with the River Spey.
The village was within Inverness-shire until 1869, following which it became part of the Morayshire until 1975, when the county was divided between the Highland and Grampianregions; it is now within the Highland Council Area. The village retained Morayshire as its official postal address for many years after the change in local government boundaries.
The parish church and cemetery are located beside the River Spey at the end of Kirk Road beside the bridge which is the latest of three which replaced the nearby ferry. The bridge was financed by local residents, having been obtained as a War Surplus item from the War Office and erected in 1922 at a cost of £ 6889. The remains of an older bridge can be seen a short distance upstream; this (much lighter) bridge was swept away in 1894, the 1922 bridge replaced one that collapsed in 1921.

A fire damaged the light and lantern in 1900 and it was converted to an unwatched electric light in 1934 (Ireland’s first to be converted to electric).
The RNLI station was inaugurated in 1910 and it’s current lifeboat, 14-21, is a Trent class lifeboat with a maximum speed of 25 knots and a range of 250 nautical miles. It also has a small XP boat to access shallow and inaccessible areas.

In Banbridge town in the County Down One morning last July, From a boreen green came a sweet Colleen And she smiled as she passed me by. She looked so sweet from her two bare feet To the sheen of her nut brown hair. Such a coaxing elf, sure I shook myself For to see I was really there. From Bantry Bay up to Derry Quay and From Galway to Dublin Town, No maid I've seen like the brown Colleen That I met in the County Down. As she onward sped, sure I scratched my head, And I looked with a feelin' rare, And I say's, say's I, to a passer-by, "whose the maid with the nut brown hair"? He smiled at me and he says's, say's he, "that's the gem of Ireland's crown. It's Rosie McCann from the banks of the Bann, She's the star of the County Down." From Bantry Bay up to Derry Quay and From Galway to Dublin Town, No maid I've seen like the brown Colleen That I met in the County Down. At the harvest fair she'll be surely there And I'll dress in my Sunday clothes, With my shoes shone bright and my hat cocked Right for a smile from my nut brown rose. No pipe I'll smoke, no horse I'll yoke Till my plough turns rust coloured brown. Till a smiling bride, by my own fireside Sits the star of the County Down. From Bantry Bay up to Derry Quay and From Galway to Dublin Town, No maid I've seen like the brown Colleen
