If you're looking for a place to cool off during the summer months, head to the Bogey Hole. It's a natural rock pool that was hand-carved by convicts in the 1800s. The crystal-clear water is perfect for a refreshing swim, and the surrounding scenery is breathtaking.
If you're interested in seeing some of Australia's wildlife, then Blackbutt Reserve is a great place to visit. This reserve is home to a wide variety of animals, including koalas, kangaroos, and wallabies. You can take a leisurely stroll through the park and observe these animals in their natural habitat.
For history buffs, the Newcastle Museum is a must-visit. The museum tells the story of Newcastle's past, including its coal mining heritage and its role in World War II. It's a great way to learn about the city's history and culture.
Another must-see attraction in Newcastle is Nobbys Lighthouse. The lighthouse was built in 1858 and has been guiding ships into the harbor ever since. You can take a guided tour of the lighthouse and enjoy the panoramic views of the ocean and city.
For those who love a good walk, the Newcastle Memorial Walk is a must-visit. This scenic walkway spans over 450 meters and offers stunning views of the coastline. The walk is a tribute to the ANZACs and provides an opportunity for visitors to reflect on Australia's military history.
If you're a wine lover, then a visit to the Hunter Valley is a must. This region is known for producing some of Australia's best wines. You can go on a wine tasting tour and sample some of the region's finest wines.
Finally, for those who just want to relax and soak up the sun, Merewether Beach is the perfect place to do so. This beach is one of the most popular in the area, and it's easy to see why. With its golden sand and crystal-clear water, it's the perfect spot to unwind and enjoy the beauty of Newcastle.
In conclusion, Newcastle, NSW, has something for everyone. Whether you're an adrenaline junkie, a history buff, or a nature lover, there are plenty of things to do and see in this vibrant city. So pack your bags, grab your camera, and get ready to explore everything that Newcastle has to offer!

Gold Hot Spots of Australia - Ophir, New South Wales

Throughout history,...
Ophir is the site where ‘payable gold’ was first discovered in Australia and is located 17 kilometres northeast of Orange, New South Wales.
Throughout history, it has been thought that William Tom Junior, John Lister, and Edward Hargraves first found payable gold in February 1851 at Ophir.
Hargraves was awarded 'ten thousand - five hundred pounds' (£10,500) by the New South Wales Government for the discovery.
Although Hargraves was rewarded for the find, new information coming to light shows that it was William Tipple Smith who first discovered gold in 1848 at the site where Ophir now is.
In April 1851, William Tom found a 14-gram nugget at the junction of the two creeks. Within three days, another 113 grams of gold, including a 55-gram nugget, had been found.
Within weeks, there were around 400 prospectors in the valley, and Australia's first gold rush had begun.
By July of that year, hotels, blacksmiths, general stores, and other services had been established, and there were approximately 2000 diggers in the area.
Only 446 gold licenses had been issued, many of the diggers were fossicking illegally.
By 1852 the gold rush was over. Only a small number of diggers persisted. Word spread that there was 'easier gold' to be found on the Turon fields, and many of the prospectors left for 'easier pickings'.
Chinese miners reworked in the diggings with some success in the mid-1850s.
Reef mining began in the area in 1866 when the Belmore Reef was discovered. Mining on the reef continued for the next 30 years.
Today, the leading site is now known as the Ophir Recreation Reserve. A 560-hectare historical reserve is located at the junction of the Lewis Ponds and Summer Hill Creeks.
The reserve offers picnic and camping facilities as well as magnificent walking trails.
Evidence of the gold rush, such as old alluvial, reef, and deep lead mines, are still visible to those exploring the area.
The reserve is a popular destination for prospectors. The 'Doug Stones Ophir – Mullion Creek Goldfield' map provides well-researched details of alluvial workings, reef lines & locations, also where nuggets have been previously found.
If you are searching for a new location to prospect for gold, the Ophir Recreation Reserve is undoubtedly a spot worth considering.
