Rolandskvadet - The Song of Roland
This one, also called "Roland og Magnus kongen" (Roland and king Charlemagne) is a modern rendition of the medieval Song of Roland. Roland was one of Charlemagne's Twelve Peers, who died together with Holger the Dane and part of their levies, after the Basque tribes, with Moorish assistance, ambushed them in the Roncesvalles/Roncevaux Pass in the Pyrenees.
Roland was said to carry two items which were blessed, plus his loyal steed Vielantif: his hunting horn Olifant and his sword, Durandal, which the moors tried to steal but could not take away from his dead hands.
Roland became a symbol of the Christian Knight, who would rather die than retreat, even after trason, and is still a popular figure in the folklore of many countries, from France to Germany, Norway, Italy and Spain.

The Song of Roland - Michael Kelly - (Rosalind Jehanne cover)
My cover and interpretation of Mistress Rosalind Jehanne's 'The Song of Roland', which she based off of the ancient French work of the same name.
The original Song of Roland was penned sometime between the late 11th and early 12th centuries, by a French poet by the name of Turold or Turoldus, and is possibly the oldest major work of French literature of which there is still a complete, intact copy. In the poem, King Charlemagne's forces have fought the Muslim army of King Marsile to the point of forcing a surrender. Having received promises of treasure and Marsile's conversion to Christianity if the Fran...

"Rolandskvadet" - Medieval Song of Roland
This is just a small excerpt of the 4000 lines contained with in the ballad of Roland, a Frankish nobleman and army commander returning from Iberia, where he and his men were ambushed and killed. It is worth noting that this song was originally written in French and not Norwegian, where the first record of this song in French was in the 1100s, while the Norwegian translation sprung up in the late 19th century.

Rolandskvadet | Norwegian ballad of the Song of Roland (lyrics)
A Norwegian retelling of the famous Song of Roland, a medieval French epic or chanson de geste written down around the 12th century AD. The epic poem itself is based on the defeat of Charlemagne's rear guard as his army returned from Moorish Spain in 778. It has since, however, become unrecognizably embellished as the story continued to grow in popularity.
This version is performed by the Mediaeval Trio, and can be found on Amazon, along with a wonderful collection of other Norwegian songs on their album "Folk songs", whose link I have included below:
http://www.amazon.com/Trio-Mediaeval-Folk-Songs/dp/B000UVRL7O
Vocals: Anna Maria Friman, Linn Andrea Fuglseth, Torunn Østrem Ossum
Percussion: Birger Mistereggen
The original text is in Norwegian: (English translation by Andrew Smith)

The Moors in the song are referenced to as "blaumann", which comes from the poem's "blaumadur", "blue-men", in reference to their dark skin color. I decided not to make this translation too literal, as to not lose my channel despite this being a historical song that naturally will carry the thoughts and point of view of that people and that society.
Also, special thanks to Robbe, Steven and Fabio for helping with the translation in our Telegram group.
Lyrics:
Runde dei opp sine silkje segl høgt I sigalråe,
Sigla dei ut åt hei'ingslondo I virkevikune ein og tvåe
Slogest dei utpå Ronsarvollen I dagane två og trjå;
Fram så søkte blåmann-fjødi skygde fyri sole;
Roland sette luren fyr blogga munn, så bles han I med vreide;
Kva tru vantar freden min? No høyrer eg luren låta!
Heim kom Magnus kongjen

My cover and interpretation of Mistress Rosalind Jehanne's 'The Song of Roland', which she based off of the ancient French work of the same name.
The original Song of Roland was penned sometime between the late 11th and early 12th centuries, by a French poet by the name of Turold or Turoldus, and is possibly the oldest major work of French literature of which there is still a complete, intact copy. The events portrayed in the poem are much older, however, and are based on Battle of Roncevaux Pass which took place in the year 778, during the reign of Charlemagne (Charles the Great).
In the poem, King Charlemagne's forces have fought the Muslim army of King Marsile to the point of forcing a surrender. Having received promises of treasure and Marsile's conversion to Christianity if the Franks will leave Spain, Charlemagne must select a messenger to send to Marsile's court to negotiate the peace. Roland, Charlemagne's nephew, nominates his stepfather, Ganelon, for the duty. Afraid that he will be murdered in the Muslims' court, and suspicious that this is what Roland intends, he gets revenge in betrayal by informing the Saracens of how they can successfully attack the Frankish rearguard, where he knows that Roland will be in command, along with his closest friend Oliver, and Archbishop Turpin.
Ambushed at Roncevaux, the Franks are overwhelmed. Oliver urges Roland to blow his horn, 'Oliphant', to summon the aid of the rest of Charlemagne's army. At first he refuses, thinking it an act of cowardice, until the Archbishop intervenes. Hearing the call, Charlemagne rides to Roland's aid, despite attempts at trickery by Ganelon. However, it becomes clear that by the time reinforcements arrive, the battle will be lost.
While I learned the song through oral tradition, and the way that I sing the lyrics differs a little from the versions I've been able to find online, there is one line that deserves a special note. I sing it as "your sword beneath your side" rather than "your sword there by your side". The line references his hiding the legendary sword Durendal with his own body after being struck his mortal blow, so that the relic will not fall into the hands of his Saracen enemies after his defeat.

"THE SONG OF ROLAND" - written by Mistress Rosalind Jehanne (m.k.a. Jonna Bernstein)
The fairest flower of chivalry to bloom in all the land,
The noblest of all the knights of Charlemagne.
Was Roland, Roland, King Charles sister's son,
Renowned through all the Frankish lands for battles you have won.
In Council hear you Ganelon make plea to go to war,
To aid the rebel Saracens, against their rightful lords
Roland, Roland, you call this plan ill made,
But nonetheless does Charlemagne agree to send them aid.
The Ganelon requests for you the post most perilous,
And willingly do you accept, as honor deems you must.
Roland, Roland, the rear guard you command,
With Oliver your loyal friend to ride at your right hand.
But at the Vale of Roncevaux your doom is now anigh,
The Saracens do hold the pass, and will not let you by.
Roland, Roland, you know now you're betrayed,
But in your heart is courage, and your voice is not dismayed.
Face ye now grim battle, take your shields and hold them high,
With honor we have lived our lives with honor we shall die.
Roland, Roland, sound your mighty horn.
Try to call the men back that rode out just yestermorn.
The king has heard you call afar, but Ganelon says nay,
Tis only our young Roland, out hunting on this day.
Roland, Roland, sound your horn again.
Meanwhile the battle rages in the valley and the glen.
Again the King has heard your call. Again the traitor lies,
And none shall come to aid you, since your peril he denies.
Roland, Roland, Sound your final blast,
As one by one your men at arms die fighting in the pass.
And last of all is Oliver by swordsmen overthrown,
And you of all the Frankish knights now stand alone.
Roland, Roland, oh black the day you died.
Your comrades slain around you and your sword there by your side.
They found you on a hilltop with your face turned to the foe,
And never has there been a day of such great woe.
Roland, Roland, your name will live in song,
Whenever brave men take up arms to right a grievous wrong.
The fairest flower of chivalry to bloom in all the land,
And the noblest of all the knights of Charlemagne.

Take the pronunciation with a grain of salt; resources on Old French phonology are difficult to find and I did my best to emulate recordings that seem well informed, but there are likely many errors in pronunciation here.

-----------------
Seks mine sveinar heime vera
Og gjøyme det gullet balde;
Dei andre seks på heidningslando
Gjøyme dei jarni kalde.
Ria dei ut or Franklandet
Med dyre dros i sadel.
Blæs i luren, Olifant,
På Ronsarvollen.
Slogest dei ut på Ronsarvollen
I dagane två og trio;
Då fekk'kje soli skine bjart
For røykjen av manneblodet.
Ria dei ut or Franklandet...
Roland sette luren for blodiga mundi
Blæs han i med vreide.
Då rivna jord og jardarstein
I trio døger av leide.
Ria dei ut or Franklandet...
-----------------
Six men stayed behind
To guard their gold;
The other six in heathen lands
Brandished cold steel.
They rode out of Frankish lands
With spoils in their saddles.
Blow your horn, Olifant,
At Roncevaux.
They fought at Roncevaux
For two days, if not three;
And the sun could not shine clear
Through the stench of men's blood.
They rode out of Frankish lands...
Roland placed the horn to his bloodied mouth
And blew with all his might.
The earth shook and mountains resounded
For three days and nights.
They rode out of Frankish lands...

In this episode of Literary Tales, we explore and analyze the great medieval French poem "The Song of Roland." In it we tease out the themes of tribal fealty, love, theology, and sacrifice, which culminate in the poet's synthesis of Frankish tribal fealty and sacrifice with the theology of love and martyrdom in Christianity.
