Côte Sauvage de Quiberon - Incredible beaches and a spectacular rock arch | Northern France Part 18

Quiberon and Vannes - a seaside resort in Brittany and medieval walls | Northern France Part 19
Quiberon is a well-known seaside resort in Brittany at the southern end of the peninsula of the same name. The place lies between the Atlantic Ocean on its west side and the Bay of Quiberon on the east side. The beaches on the east side are calm and sheltered from the wind and are good for bathing or swimming. The large beach "La Grande Plage" right next to Quiberon is also very popular with families. The western side of the Atlantic, however, is also called Côte Sauvage, i.e. "wild coast" and is scenically beautiful, but the waves are not without danger. You can find a video of the Côte Sauvage here: https://youtu.be/jx4vZFZ-OBU
The imposing Château Turpault, named after its builder, was built in the early 20th century. It is privately owned and unfortunately cannot be visited. Neverthel...

Places to see in ( Quiberon - France )
Quiberon is a town and a peninsula on the southern coast of the Finistère department of western Brittany, near Carnac. The peninsula is 14 kilometres long and connected to mainland France by little more than a bank of sand with a road across it, with the entrance to the peninsula being overlooked by the 19th century Fort de Penthièvre. Although there are few important monuments in the town of Quiberon it is pleasant to explore: your visit will be centred around the port and on the long sandy beach in the town itself. This main beach is almost one kilometre long and called La Grande Plage.
Behind the beach you can see various grand villas dating from the time that Quiberon became established as a resort at the end of the 19th century, when trainlines...

We are in Brittany on the Quiberon Peninsula. Today we take a hike along the west side of the peninsula, the so-called wild coast (Côte Sauvage). Our starting point is the village of Kerhostin, which can be easily reached by train in summer. The destination of the hike is the town of Quiberon at the southern tip of the peninsula.
At Kerhostin at the beginning of the peninsula is Fort Penthièvre, which was built in the 18th century to protect the peninsula from enemy attacks. It is still used militarily today. Our hiking trail runs above the rocky and rugged coast, which is repeatedly interrupted by small bays. We quickly reach Portivy, a charming village with a small fishing port. It's low tide and the fishing boats are out of water. Next to it there is also a small beach, where sand and rocks alternate.
We continue on the trail that takes us along the wild coast for several kilometers. Again and again, magnificent views open up to us, such as at the Pointe Beg-An-Aud headland and the Pointe du Percho. From high above we look down on the rocks of the coast sculpted by wind and waves. The unbridled power of the Atlantic shaped this landscape, the impressive surf conveys something of this force to us.
From the Pointe du Percho we already have a beautiful view of the highlight of this hike, namely the beach "Plage de Port Blanc" with the famous rock arch "L'Arche de Port Blanc", also called "Roche Percée".
This sandy beach is now very wide at low tide and the water is gone again. We can walk along the rocks below for a long time. People spread out on the extensive beach, despite the high season, everyone finds their place. The rock arch offers a fantastic panorama, especially the view through the arch to the sea is unique. From the mussel banks that we see on the rocks, we can conclude that the scenery is completely different at high tide: Then the beach has largely disappeared and the rock arch is also washed by the surf, which has its own charm.
We leave this beautiful place and continue walking along the coast. The path leads us back up to the rocks with wonderful panoramas of beaches and wild rocky coves. Swimming in these bays can be very dangerous due to the waves and currents and is therefore prohibited in some places. But many tourists are not impressed by this. It's easy for us not to jump into the water. The beaches are really fantastic, but the water is just too cold for us!
Finally we reach the outskirts of the town of Quiberon and pass the pretty seafront Château Turpault. Passing the port and the wide beach of Quiberon, we come to the center of Quiberon and look now for a créperie for dinner to reward ourselves for the long hike

You can find a video of the Côte Sauvage here: https://youtu.be/jx4vZFZ-OBU
The imposing Château Turpault, named after its builder, was built in the early 20th century. It is privately owned and unfortunately cannot be visited. Nevertheless, it is an eye-catcher at the beginning of the Côte Sauvage.
We take a walk to the beautiful little headland of Conguel in the very south of Quiberon. Here, at the end of the peninsula, in the midst of the water-washed, wild rocks, we see a few more small offshore islets, and in the distance, the Teignouse lighthouse marks the separation between the Bay of Quiberon and the Atlantic. An idyllic place, we feel like we are at the end of the world.
Off the Quiberon peninsula is the largest of Breton's islands, Belle-Île-en-Mer, a popular tourist destination with regular ferry services from Quiberon.
In contrast to the more modern seaside resort of Quiberon, Vannes, the main town on the Gulf of Morbihan, presents itself as a city with a rich historical heritage. Between the mighty city walls, the Remparts, and the small river Marle, we find beautiful and lush flowering gardens that invite you to take a stroll. Passing the port, we then reach the old town through the Saint-Vincent city gate. Beyond the gate, the 17th-century buildings crowd the street. The half-timbered ensemble around the Henri IV square, which is dominated by the Saint-Pierre cathedral, is particularly beautiful. The construction of the cathedral began in the 15th century but was only completed in the 19th century.
Town villas and half-timbered houses stand side by side around the Place des Lices, where medieval tournaments were held. The facades shine in colors that make the houses look particularly cheerful.
The City Hall of Vannes is a copy of the City Hall of Paris. In front of the town hall is an equestrian statue of Richemont, Duke of Brittany, who played a key role in the expulsion of the English from Brittany and Normandy in the 15th century.
At the end of the day, as always in Brittany, we strengthen ourselves with tasty galettes and delicious crêpes. At sunset we return to Quiberon.
Next week we will conclude our northern France trip at the megaliths of Carnac. The video can be found here: https://youtu.be/Co4OpBEOPxw

Behind the beach you can see various grand villas dating from the time that Quiberon became established as a resort at the end of the 19th century, when trainlines first arrived here, as well as some more recent developments. In the town behind the beach you can see typical low Brittany whitewashed houses and shops, and the 12th century Church of Notre-Dame de Locmaria. There is also a small museum dedicated to the history of the Quiberon peninsula, called the Maison du Patrimoine (on rue de Port Haliguen in the town centre). There are two ports here: Port Maria, where the fishing fleet is based and from where you can take excursions to the nearby islands, and Port Haliguen, which is the port for pleasure boats. The castle you can see on a headland is called Chateau Turpault and was built in 1910 - it is not open to the public.
The Quiberon peninsula is a very popular seaside resort in the summer, and has some attractive beaches on the sheltered eastern coast. The most popular beaches (apart from the beach in Quiberon town) are those at Saint-Pierre and Penthievre. At Saint-Pierre-de-Quiberon you can also visit the menhirs (the town lies at the southern end of the 'Coast of megaliths' which runs south from Carnac on to the peninsula).
Head to the most southerly point on the peninsula, called the Pointe du Conguel, for the best view across the to the islands in Quiberon Bay. Pointe de Percho at the north-west of the peninsula is also well worth visiting for the views across to the islands of Belle-Ile and Groix.
The western coast of the peninsula is altogether more dramatic and a popular site with walkers, cyclists and nature lovers. While the coast here is very pleasant to explore on foot or by bike, there is also a road that follows this western part of Quiberon and incorporates numerous stopping places, so it is still easy to enjoy the scenery. Include Kervihan, Kerné and Kerniscop for some of the most dramatic scenery. The other main reason that Quiberon attracts visitors is because ferries to the popular islands of Belle-Ile, Ile de Houat and Ile de Hoedic leave from the port here.
( Quiberon - France ) is well know as a tourist destination because of the variety of places you can enjoy while you are visiting Quiberon . Through a series of videos we will try to show you recommended places to visit in Quiberon - France
