Princess Charlotte Augusta of Wales (7 January 1796– 6 November 1817) was the only child of George, Prince of Wales (later to become King George IV) and Caroline of Brunswick. Had she outlived both her grandfather King George III and her father, she would have become Queen of the United Kingdom, but she died following childbirth at the age of 21.
Charlotte's parents disliked each other from before their arranged marriage and soon separated. The Prince of Wales left most of Charlotte's care to governesses and servants, but only allowed her limited contact with the Princess of Wales, who eventually left the country. As Charlotte grew to adulthood, her father pressured her to marry William, Hereditary Prince of Orange (later King of the Netherlands), but after initially accepting him, Charlotte soon broke off the intended match. This resulted in an extended contest of wills between her and her father, and finally the Prince of Wales permitted her to marry Prince Leopold of Saxe-Coburg-Saalfeld (later King of the Belgians). After a year and a half of happy marriage, Charlotte died after giving birth to a stillborn son.
Princess Charlotte of Wales was an East Indiaman, launched in 1812 and named for Princess Charlotte of Wales. She made nine voyages to Madras and Bengal for the British Honourable East India Company before she was broken up in 1831.
Voyages
Because she sailed during the Napoleonic Wars, on her first two voyages she sailed under a letter of marque dated 4 April 1812.
Princess Charlotte of Wales, under the command of Captain John Craig, left Falmouth on 15 May 1812, bound for Ceylon and Bengal. She reached Madeira on 3 June, Colombo on 2 October and Saugor on 22 December. From there she sailed to Malacca, where she arrived on 1 April 1813, Batavia on 28 April, and Samarang on 24 May. In June 1813 she transported troops for a punitive expedition to the Sultanate of Sambas. She then left Malacca on 28 July, and Penang on 10 August. She left Saugor on 24 September, Calcutta on 26 October, and Saugor again on 4 December. On 10 January 1814 she arrived at Madras and on 4 February Point de Galle. By 10 April she had reached St Helena. She arrived at The Downs on 6 August.
Princess Charlotte was a 60-ton brig that disappeared in 1820 on its voyage between Hobart Town and Sydney.
The Princess Charlotte was constructed by the Government in 1819 at Newcastle, New South Wales. She left Hobart Town on 27 September 1820 for Sydney with crew and passengers and a cargo of wheat. The passengers included four soldiers from the 48th Regiment and at least three convicts. The Captain was Edward Devine
