Oxford (/ˈɒksfərd/) is a city in the South East region of England and the county town of Oxfordshire. With a population of 159,994 it is the 52nd largest city in the United Kingdom, and one of the fastest growing and most ethnically diverse. Oxford has a broad economic base. Its industries include motor manufacturing, education, publishing and a large number of information technology and science-based businesses, some being academic offshoots. The city is known worldwide as the home of the University of Oxford, the oldest university in the English-speaking world. Buildings in Oxford demonstrate notable examples of every English architectural period since the late Saxon period. Oxford is known as the "city of dreaming spires", a term coined by poet Matthew Arnold.
History
Medieval
Oxford was first settled in Saxontimes and was initially known as "Oxenaforda", meaning "Ford of the Oxen" (according to the English Place-Name Society, who base their result on a passing reference in Florence of Worcester's work "Chronicon ex chronicis"); fords were more common than bridges at that time. It began with the establishment of a river crossing for oxen around AD 900. In the 10th century, Oxford became an important military frontier town between the kingdoms of Mercia and Wessex and was on several occasions raided by Danes.
Oxford is a city in, and the county seat of, Lafayette County, Mississippi, United States. Founded in 1837, it was named after the British university city of Oxford in hopes of having the state university located there, which it did successfully attract.
As of the 2010 US Census, the population is 18,916; the Census Bureau estimates the city's 2013 population at 20,865. Oxford is the home of the University of Mississippi, founded in 1848, also commonly known as "Ole Miss".
Oxford has been named by USA Today as one of the top six college towns in the nation. It is included in The Best 100 Small Towns in America. Lafayette County consistently leads the state rankings in the lowest unemployment rate per quarter. Oxford City Schools are ranked as "Star" schools, the highest ranking available, and Lafayette County school systems are consistently ranked as "5-star" systems.
History
Oxford and Lafayette County were formed from lands ceded by the Chickasaw in the treaty of Pontotoc Creek in 1832. The county was organized in 1836, and in 1837 three pioneers—John Martin, John Chisom, and John Craig—purchased land from Hoka, a female Chickasaw landowner, as a site for the town. They named it Oxford, intending to promote it as a center of learning in the Old Southwest. In 1841, the Mississippi legislature selected Oxford as the site of the state university, which opened in 1848.
Oxford is a residential town located in western New Haven County, Connecticut, United States. The population was 12,683 at the 2010 Census. Oxford is the 26th wealthiest town in Connecticut by median household income. Distinct settled areas in the town include Oxford Center, Quaker Farms, and Riverside. Oxford belongs to the Naugatuck Valley Economic Development Region and the Central Naugatuck Valley Planning Area, and the Bridgeport–Stamford–NorwalkMetropolitan Statistical Area. Some of Oxford's unofficial nicknames, used often by the town's residents, are: O-Town, Oxhood, and The Miami of the Naugatuck Valley. A little-known fact about Oxford is that international rap superstar Aubrey "Drake" Graham actually hails from the town-- when he references "The Six" in some of his songs, he is actually referring to Oxford. "The Six" refers to the first two digits of the town's ZIP code, 06478.
History
In the 18th century, farmers herded livestock through Oxford from as far away as Litchfield on the way to the port of New Haven. In the 19th century, the town lost population as farmers moved to work in better-paying factories.

If you read "Bob, a DJ and a clown" on a guest list, are three people coming to the party, or only one? That depends on whether you're for or against the Oxford comma -- perhaps the most hotly contested punctuation mark of all time. When do we use one? Can it really be optional, or is there a universal rule? TED-Ed explores both sides of this comma conundrum.

00:00 Introduction
Oxford is defined by its quarters which are closed, unlike a derby where they're open. Then we have a vamp like here, the ankle is exposed. You usually have a cap-toe and a center seam. As explained, the oxford is just defined by these few characteristics and as such, there are many different kinds out there. Let's do a run-through so you know exactly what is what.
01: 06 1. Cap-toe oxford
Basically, what you're looking for is a shoe with a cap-toe, no broguing which means no hole perforations that's all black with neat lines and elegant last. This is in fact, the very first black oxford I bought as a teenager and I still have it today simply because it's so timeless and versatile.
01: 36 2. Plain oxford.
Basically, it's like a cap-toe oxford, it just lacks the cap-toe and sometimes you can see a medallion on them but then it's not a plain oxford anymore. Usually, the plain oxford is favored in patent leather for evening shoes so you can wear it with a tuxedo.
So, how should you wear these oxfords? Like I said, first one should be in black. If you have another cap-toe oxford, you can go with a solid, dark brown one that's going to be versatile or burgundy. Plain oxfords are best in patent leathers for evening wear and nothing else.
02:16 3. Wingtip oxford or brogue.
Basically, what that means, it has a wingtip in front that is like a W and we did an entire video just about this kind of style so, take a look at it, here.
02:35 4. Saddle oxford or Saddle shoe
It has the same closed lacing system but it has a middle strip of leather which is called a saddle. It's particularly popular in the US and outside the US, it never really caught on. It's a more casual style and I suggest you only wear it if you're big into Americana or you just want to create a preppy outfit otherwise, it looks out of place.
03:03 5. Kiltie Oxford
It's very rare and it actually has an additional tongue on the outside which looks a little bit like a kilt hence the name and it's sometimes seen on golf shoes. Other than that, I really don't suggest you wear the kiltie unless you have a very specific look in mind but it looks very special and unique and people will definitely ask you about it.
03:30 6. Whole Cut
It's called that way because it is cut from one whole piece of leather. Generally, it has just one center seam in the back and it's very popular these days. The only problem with the whole cut is that if it's made out of a ready to wear shoe oftentimes, it wrinkles more easily simply because it's one piece of leather that is shaped to your last so keep that in mind when you invest in one.
04:01 7. Seamless Oxford
there's actually not a single seam so you have to get a very good hide that adjusts to the entire last and that's why it's only something you often see in bespoke shoes. Seamless and whole cuts are very sleek and elegant shoes that sometimes, they have a medallion on top and you can wear them with suits but if you have them in brown and burgundy colors, also with sportcoat combinations. Overall though, I'd say it's more in the formal end of things just because of the clean line and the lack of seams.
04:37 8. U tip
it's similar to a wing tip but it has that U shape when you look at it from the top. It often comes as a spectator, as you can see here, with two tones and basically, it's a very loud shoe, it's a usual shoe and therefore, it's only suggested if you want to create an outfit that is defined and that catches people's eyes.
That being said, one of the ways to get really a lot out of your oxfords is to change the color of your shoelaces. While a pair of shoes can cost you $200, $300 or $2000, a pair of shoelaces cost about ten bucks and it can really change the entire look.
There are lots of other color combinations for oxfords and since it's such a classic, versatile and timeless last and style, you will find basically anything under the sun.

Muslim journalist Mehdi Hasan, political editor of the Huffington Post, warns Anne-Marie Waters that her "astonishing claims" might endanger her future as a Labour Party candidate, but assured her "don't worry, the BNP will take you".
Hasan asks why, if Islam is "responsible for killing," such a tiny percentage of believers actually participate in violence. He asks the audience if they really believe that 1.6 billion people are all "followers, promoters and believers in a religion of violence".
Hasan urges them not to "fuel the arguments of the phobes and bigots and legitimise hate", but to "trust the Muslims that you know and that you hear."

ABOUT THE OXFORD UNION SOCIETY:
The Union is the world's most prestigious debating society, with an unparalleled reputation for bringing international guests and speakers to Oxford. It has been established for 189 years, aiming to promote debate and discussion not just in Oxford University, but across the globe.
The Oxford Union is deeply grateful and encouraged by the messages of support in response to our determination to uphold free speech. During our 200 year history, many have tried to shut us down. As the effects of self-imposed censorship on university campuses, social media and the arts show no signs of dissipating, the importance of upholding free speech remains as critical today as it did when we were founded in 1823. Your support is critical in enabling The Oxford Union to continue its mission without interruption and without interference. You can support the Oxford Union here: https://oxford-union.org/supportus

In-depth guide to Oxfords here:

What exactly is an oxford shoe? Its history dates back centuries and if you want to learn all the details about it, please check out our in-depth guide on our website, here.

Zing Tsjeng visits Oxford to examine the ongoing controversy as universities across the UK reckon with their unsavoury connections to colonialism. People like slave owners, slave traders and white supremacists have historic connections to some of the UK’s finest universities. They don’t put that bit in the prospectus, but it’s the truth.
Empires of Dirt is a show about Europeans getting rich at the expense of everyone else. VICE World News host Zing Tsjeng uncovers the ugly history of the European colonial empires they don’t teach us in schools. Countries around the world were looted for their treasures, people were oppressed and exploited and European powers relentlessly profited. The far-reaching repercussions of colonialism are all around us, from our financial institutions to the food we have in our cupboards at home – and it’s about time we took notice.
