The Virginian, which was renamed The Men from Shiloh in its final year on network TV, is an American Western television series starring James Drury in the title role, along with Doug McClure, Lee J. Cobb, and others. It originally aired on NBC from 1962 to 1971, for a total of 249 episodes. (Drury had played the same role in 1958, in an unsuccessful pilot that became an episode of the NBC summer series Decision.) Filmed in color, The Virginian became television's first 90-minute Western series (75 minutes excluding commercial breaks). Cobb left the series after the first four seasons, and was replaced over the years by mature character actors John Dehner, Charles Bickford, John McIntire, and Stewart Granger, portraying different characters. It was set before Wyoming became a state in 1890, as mentioned several times as Wyoming Territory, although other references set in later, around 1898.
The series was loosely based on The Virginian: Horseman of the Plains, a 1902 Western novel by Owen Wister that Hollywood had previously adapted for movies. Percy Faith composed the show's original theme.
The series ran for nine seasons, making it network television's third-longest running Western, behind Bonanza at 14 seasons and 430 episodes, and Gunsmoke at 20 seasons and 635 episodes.
Set in the late 19th century, and loosely based on The Virginian, A Horseman of the Plains, a 1902 novel by Owen Wister, the series revolved around the tough foreman of the Shiloh Ranch, played by Drury. His top hand, Trampas (McClure), and he were the only characters to remain with the show for the entire run, although Ross Elliott, as Sheriff Abbott, recurred throughout the run, appearing in 61 episodes over nine years. As in the book, the foreman went only by the name "the Virginian". The series was set in Medicine Bow, Wyoming. Various references in the first season indicate that setting is 1898.
The series focused on the foreman's quest to maintain an orderly lifestyle at Shiloh Ranch. The ranch was named after the two-day American Civil War Battle of Shiloh, at Pittsburg Landing, Tennessee. The show's white Appaloosa was named Joe D., and Trampas' buckskin horse was named Buck. As the show progressed, Trampas became the more developed of the characters, and continues to be the role for which actor Doug McClure was best-known.
Several cast changes were made throughout the program's run. In the first four seasons (1962–1966), the owner of the ranch was Judge Henry Garth (Cobb). His de facto daughter Betsy (Roberta Shore) lived at the ranch with him, and had a sister relationship with the ranch hands. Ranch hand Steve Hill (Gary Clarke) joined in episode storylines. Randy Boone joined the show in the second season as a youthful ranch hand who played guitar and sang duets with Betsy.
In the third season, Clu Gulager, who had previously guest-starred twice in earlier seasons, was added to the show as the restless deputy Emmett Ryker. After executive producer Frank Price was replaced by Norman Macdonnell at the end of season three, season four became a troublesome time. When Shore left the cast, Macdonnell added a new leading woman — Diane Roter, who played Jennifer, the judge's niece. When Cobb left the show in 1966, John Dehner, as Morgan Starr, was brought in as the manager of Shiloh when Judge Garth left to become the governor of Wyoming. His demanding presence and tough demeanor did not fit well with the show, nor did fans like his character.
Producer Frank Price was brought back on board for season five to straighten out the series. He replaced the characters of Randy, owner Morgan Starr, and Jennifer with a few actors who brought back the family atmosphere to the show. John Grainger (played by Charles Bickford) became the new owner. Elizabeth Grainger (played by Sara Lane), was John Grainger's granddaughter. Her brother Stacey (Don Quine) rounded out this new cast.

THE REBEL needs THE YANK! Writer/producer Andrew J. Fenady wanted a companion show to his Nick Adams series starring his friend, James Drury. The year was 1960 and Fenady, steeped in western history and Civil War lore, put together a terrific script, cast and production team for THE YANK. Fenady also enlisted the same director who had helmed THE REBEL’s first episode in 1959, Irvin Kershner.
Both pilots were loaded with hard cuts, violence, and interesting camera placement. THE REBEL, starring Nick Adams, had sold quickly. Fenady was hoping that lightning would strike twice. In addition to working together on THE REBEL, Fenady and Kershner had previously teamed on the low budget cult classic, STAKEOUT ON DOPE STREET. All were years before George Lucas tapped Kershner to direct the STAR WARS sequel, THE EMPIRE STRIKES BACK (1980).
Fenady, whether it was for his TV series THE REBEL, BRANDED or HONDO, always packed his programs, and movies like CHISUM, with very talented character actors we all know and love. In THE YANK, we see an array of the finest. John McIntire. L.Q. Jones. Harry Townes. John Sutton. Jack Pennick. And, as a picked upon ex-Yankee surgeon in a Southern town, James Drury is terrific, gives a very strong performance and shows why he became one of TV’s most popular performers. Lots of moral dilemma and compromised characters populate this solid half hour.
Fortunately, or unfortunately, depending on how you look at it, THE YANK failed to get picked up. Unfortunate for Fenady, but fortunate for Jim Drury because he soon became the star of the 3rd longest running network western in TV history, THE VIRGINIAN (1962-1971).

►Official ‘The Man’ Lyrics
Written by Taylor Swift & Joel Little
I would be complex
I would be cool
They’d say I played the field before I found someone to commit to
And that would be ok
For me to do
Every conquest I had made would make me more of a boss to you
I’d be a fearless leader
I’d be an alpha type
When everyone believes ya
What’s that like? I’m so sick of running as fast I can
Wondering if I’d get there quicker
If I was a man
And I’m so sick of them coming at me again
‘Cause if I was a man...
Then I’d be the man
I’d be the man
I’d be the man They’d say I hustled
Put in the work
They wouldn’t shake their heads and question how much of this I deserve
What I was wearing
If I was rude
Could all be separated from my good ideas and power moves
And they would toast to me, oh
Let the players play
I’d be just like Leo
In Saint-Tropez Chorus What’s it like to brag about
Raking in dollars
And getting bitches and models
And it’s all good if you’re bad
And it’s okay if you’re mad If I was out flashing my dollars
I’d be a bitch, not a baller
They paint me out to be bad
So it’s okay that I’m mad I’m so sick of running as fast I can
Wondering if I’d get there quicker
If I was a man
I’m so sick of them coming at me again
‘Cause if I was a man...
Then I’d be the man
I’d be the man
I’m so sick of running as fast I can
Wondering if I’d get there quicker
If I was a man
And I’m so sick of them coming at me again

Wondering if I’d get there quicker
If I was a man
And I’m so sick of them coming at me again
‘Cause if I was a man...
Then I’d be the man
I’d be the man
I’d be the man
I’d be the man
I’d be the man
I’d be the man
If I was a man
I’d be the man

The Men yes, "The", are a four-piece post-punk outfit from Brooklyn, NY. Their catalog which began in 2008 with a hand-dubbed self-released demo cassette has grown in 2011 to include two more LP's- We Are the Men and Immaculada-two more tapes, and a 7". Having three songwriters in the band allows them to pull from innumerable post-punk sources, referencing drone, metal, shoegaze, and even Suicide lyrics on Leave Home. They have breathed new life into the genre of hardcore and created a seminal album that is truly for punks of all ages.
The Men’s hugely influential album Leave Home came out during an exciting time in New York City. DIY lofts and shitty bars littered downtown Manhattan and North Brooklyn. The Acheron had just opened its doors. Kill Your Idols had broken up. Toxic State Records was just getting started with Crazy Spirit, Dawn of Humans, Hank Wood, and Perdition EP’s. The city was alive with punk and noise and filth. And right at that time, The Men were the show to be at. Every gig was dripping with sweat. Hallways and sidewalks were packed between sets. Chaos reigned in the pit.
The Men hit like a bag of hard cement, a hardcore band with a familiar sound but with an aura of absolute chaos and intensity, like everything was on the brink of going off the rails at every moment of their set, a downhill freight train with no brakes. During these shows one’s focus could shoot back and forth between the intimidatingly angry-eyed, shaved-headed Chris Hansell (who went on to front Warthog) and the long-haired hippie punks Mark Perro, Nick Chiericozzi, and Rich Samis, that made up the surrounding band. Just one of the many juxtapositions the band embraced.
If The Men were a chapter in Michael Azzerad’s Our Band Could Be Your Life, the early EP’s and cassettes would obviously be Minor Threat and Black Flag, while Leave Home would likely be Sonic Youth. It was just before they made the full jump into each record being a smorgasbord of underground genres, from dream pop to folk; before they had tracks called “Country Song,” for example. This was a preview of what was to come. Leave Home was a pivot from pure hardcore punk, as the band got lost in the groove in a way one couldn’t on a straight up punk record. That groove was strong on “If You Leave…,” “(),” and “Bataille,” while they spaced out on “Shittin’ With The Shah” and stayed as fierce as ever on “LADOCH.” And of course, Leave Home had a re-recording of their hardest track to date, “Think,” making it clear that they were still the moshers we all had come to know and love. If The Men raised their flag as an important New York punk band with Immaculada, they started waving it in the freakiest way with Leave Home.
There is no doubt that Leave Home was one of the most influential records of the last decade. You can hear their mark everywhere from Ty Segall and Thee Oh Sees to Milk Music and Hank Wood. Few bands have traversed as many genres as The Men and even fewer have done it so well. It is a testament to the band’s undying authenticity and adventurism that the record sounds as timeless and urgent now as it did when it blew the doors of New York punk off its hinges ten years ago, leaving a giant hole for bands of all kinds to come racing through.
