The Low Countries (Dutch: de Lage Landen, French: les Pays-Bas) is a coastal region in western Europe, consisting especially of the Netherlands and Belgium, and the low-lying delta of the Rhine, Meuse, Scheldt, and Ems rivers where much of the land is at or below sea level. This wide area of Northern Europe roughly stretches from French Gravelines and Dunkirk at its southwestern point, to the area of Dutch Delfzijl and German Eastern Frisia at its northeastern point, and to Luxembourg and French Thionville in the southeast.
Most of the Low Countries are coastal regions bounded by the North Sea or the English Channel. The countries without access to the sea have linked themselves politically and economically to those with access to form one union of port and hinterland.
The Low Countries were the scene of the early northern towns, newly built rather than developed from ancient centres, that marked the reawakening of Europe in the 12th century. In that period, they rivaled northern Italy for the most densely populated region of Europe. Most of the cities were governed by guilds and councils along with a figurehead ruler; interaction with their ruler was regulated by a strict set of rules describing what the latter could and could not expect from them. All of the regions mainly depended on trade, manufacturing and the encouragement of the free flow of goods and craftsmen.

The Rise of the Dutch Republic – How the Low Countries Became a Confederacy
How did the Low Countries become a republic? The Dutch Republic was a confederacy that was established in 1588. It happened when the Eighty Years' War (the Dutch Revolt) was going on for twenty years. The Reformation early 1500s caused many people in the Low Countries to turn to Protestantism. Spanish ruler Charles V and his son Phillips II started to prosecute these so-called heretics (Calvinists). Many of them burned at the stake. Dutch nobles handed in the Supplication of the Nobles (Smeekschrift der Edelen). After this the prosecutions were halted. The Protestants started with Hedge-Preaches (Hagenpreken) what followed by the Iconoclastic Fury (Beeldenstorm). Phillips II sent Duke Alva (known as Iron Alva) to restore order. Many people fled the Low Countries. One of them was William of...

This was known as the Spanish Fury (Spaanse Furie). With the Pacification of Ghent (Pacificatie van Gent) were the Dutch provinces (Catholic or Protestant) united themselves against Spanish aggression. What followed was the Act of Abjuration (Plakkaat van Verlatinghe). In 1588 the Dutch Republic (Republiek der Zeven Verenigde Nederlanden) was established.

And if I lose control, I will see you in Hell, Let me fall apart when I see you go, And when she feels the low She gets higher than Mars, And dances to the sound, From the beats in our hearts If she flies away today could my heart withstand the break, Does the low beat the way to your heart She'll take your breath away, Like the light takes the Stars, The wind that moves the waves, To the sea she goes And when she feels the low, She gets higher than Mars, And dances to the sounds, From the beats in our hearts If she flies away today could my heart withstand the break, Does the low beat the way to your heart If she flies away today could my heart withstand the break, Does the low beat the way to your heart I will stay the highest If she danced away today could my heart withstand the break, Does the low beat the way to your heart If she flies away today could my heart withstand the break, Does the low beat the way to your heart Does the low beat the way to your heart
