Margaret Lockwood, CBE (15 September 1916 – 15 July 1990) was an English actress who was a film star in the 1930s and 1940s.
Early life
She was born Margaret Mary Day Lockwood in Karachi, British India, to Henry Francis Lockwood, an English administrator of a railway company, and his Scottish third wife Margaret Eveline Waugh. She returned to England in 1920 with her mother, brother 'Lyn' and half-brother Frank, and a further half-sister 'Fay' joined them the following year, but her father remained in Karachi, visiting them infrequently. She also had another half-brother, John, from her father's first marriage, brought up by his mother in England. Lockwood attended Sydenham High School for girls, and a ladies' school in Kensington, London.
Margaret Lockwood was a women's cricket player, who played two test matches for the England women's cricket team in 1951.
Lockwood was born in Huddersfield, Yorkshire on March 8, 1911. She played for three major teams during her career in cricket: England Women, North Women, and Yorkshire Women. Her two trials were against the Australian Women in Scarborough and then a few days later in Worcester. She died in Leeds, Yorkshire at the age of 87 on January 14, 1999.
It is perhaps a strange coincidence that there was a British actress named Margaret Lockwood a little before Margaret Lockwood the cricket player played for England. Even more strange, Margaret Lockwood the actress unintentionally created a piece of cricket slang that lasts to this day. Lockwood the actress appeared in the 1945 film "The Wicked Lady" and the slang turned "wicked lady" to "wicked maiden" and finally into "wicket maiden".
Margaret Beck (later Margaret Lockwood; born 1952) is a retired badminton player from England who ranked among the world's best during most of the 1970s.
Playing career
An exceptional junior talent, she won women's singles at the 1970 British Commonwealth Games while still in her teens.
In 1973, Ms. Beck won the women's singles at the All-England Championships, which, aside from the international team championships (Uber Cup and Thomas Cup), was then the world's most prestigious tournament.

Youth and education
Redgrave was born in Bristol, Gloucestershire, England, the son of the silent film actor Roy Redgrave and actress Margaret Scudamore. He never knew his father, who left when he was only six months old to pursue a career in Australia. His mother subsequently married Captain James Anderson, a tea planter, but Redgrave greatly disliked his stepfather.
He studied at Clifton College and Magdalene College, Cambridge. Clifton College's theatre, The Redgrave Theatre, is named after him. He was a schoolmaster at Cranleigh School in Surrey before becoming an actor in 1934. There he directed the boys in Hamlet, King Lear and The Tempest, but managed to play all the leading roles himself. The "Redgrave Room" at the school was later named after him. In the new Guildford School of Acting building which opened in January 2010, there is the "Sir Michael Redgrave Studio".
Paul Lukas (May 26, 1891– August 15, 1971) was an Hungarian-born American actor. He won the Oscar for Best Actor for his performance in the film Watch on the Rhine (1943).
Life and career
Lukas was born Pál Lukács in Budapest into a Jewish family, the son of Mária (née Zilahy) and János Lukács, an advertising executive.
Lukas made his stage debut in Budapest in 1916 and his film debut in 1917. At first, he played elegant, smooth womanizers, but increasingly he became typecast as a villain. He had a successful stage and film career in Hungary, Germany, and Austria, where he worked with Max Reinhardt. He arrived in Hollywood in 1927 and became a naturalized citizen of the United States in 1937.
Dame Mary Louise WebsterDBE (19 June 1865 – 29 May 1948), known professionally as May Whitty and later Dame May Whitty, was an English stage and film actress.
Background
Born in Liverpool, England, to William Alfred Whitty (ca. 1837–1876) and Mary Louisa (née Ashton, ca. 1837–1894), she made her first stage appearance in Liverpool in 1881, later moving to London to appear in the West End.
She married actor-manager Ben Webster in 1892 in St Giles's Parish Church, London, and in 1895 they visited the United States, where Whitty appeared on Broadway. Their first child, a son, died at birth. Their only surviving child, a daughter born in the USA in 1905, Margaret Webster, was a stage actress and held dual US/UK citizenship. Whitty's stage career continued for the rest of her life. In March 1910, she made her transition to middle-aged and elderly character roles, playing Amelia Madras in Harley Granville-Barker's four-act comedy The Madras House.
Honours
In 1918, she was made a Dame Commander of the Order of the British Empire (DBE, gazetted under her legal married name Mary Louise Webster) in recognition of her charitable work during World War I. She was the first film and stage actress to receive a damehood, along with the opera singer Nellie Melba, who was also thus honoured in 1918.
The Lady Vanishes is a 1938 British thriller cinema film directed by Alfred Hitchcock, starring Margaret Lockwood and Michael Redgrave. Written by Sidney Gilliat and Frank Launder based on the 1936 novel The Wheel Spins by Ethel Lina White, the film is about a beautiful English tourist travelling by train in continental Europe who discovers that her elderly travelling companion seems to have disappeared from the train. After her fellow passengers deny ever having seen the elderly lady, the young woman is helped by a young musicologist, the two proceeding to search the train for clues to the old lady's disappearance.
The Lady Vanishes was filmed in the Gainsborough Studios at Islington, London. It was Hitchcock's last British film until the 1970s, he relocated to Hollywood soon after its release. Although the director's three previous efforts had done poorly at the box office, The Lady Vanishes was widely successful, and confirmed American producer David O. Selznick's belief that Hitchcock indeed had a future in Hollywood cinema. Having remained one of Hitchcock's most renowned British films over the years, a remake (also titled The Lady Vanishes) was released in 1979, and in March 2013 the BBC broadcast a TV adaptation starring Tuppence Middleton as Iris.
