How to manage Chronic Ringworm infection? - Dr. Rajdeep Mysore
A ringworm infection is nothing but a fungal infection. Dermatophytosis, also known as ringworm, is a fungal infection of the skin.[2] Typically it results in a red, itchy, scaly, circular rash.[1] Hair loss may occur in the area affected.[1] Symptoms begin four to fourteen days after exposure.[1] Multiple areas can be affected at a given time.[4]
About 40 types of fungi can cause ringworm.[2] They are typically of the Trichophyton, Microsporum, or Epidermophyton type.[2] Risk factors include using public showers, contact sports such as wrestling, excessive sweating, contact with animals, obesity, and poor immune function.[3][4] Ringworm can spread from other animals or between people.[3] Diagnosis is often based on the appearance and symptoms.[5] It may be confirmed by either culturing or looking at a skin scraping under a microscope.[5]
Prevention is by keeping the skin dry, not walking barefoot in public, and not sharing personal items.[3] Treatment is typically with antifungal creams such as clotrimazole or miconazole.[7] If the scalp is involved, antifungals by mouth such as fluconazole may be needed.[7]
Globally, up to 20% of the population may be infected by ringworm at any given time.[8] Infections of the groin are more common in males, while infections of the scalp and body occur equally in both sexes.[4] Infections of the scalp are most common in children while infections of the groin are most common in the elderly.[4] Descriptions of ringworm date back to ancient history.[9]

Ringworm is a infection caused by a fungus, not by a worm. This infection can affect any part of your skin infact it can affect your hairs and nails as well. It can cause itchy rash and affect various body surfaces. In the past few decades, we are encountering cases of Ringworm that are extensive and recurrent, the change in pattern in infection is not known, it can be change in environmental factors, fungal species and could be irregular treatment . more important is the misuse of topical steroids;. The treatment for Ringworm infection includes oral medications a s well as creams to be applied. Please follow your dermatologists instruction and do not stop the treatment till your dermatologists instructs, as the infection can recur. Dryness of your skin discourages the growth of the fungus on your skin. So a regular bath followed by a through drying is very important. Avoid use of non porous clothing which keeps your skin moist. All your clothing should be washed regularly,. All your clothings and bed linen on the infected person who should be washed separately and better pressed to get rid of the fungus. Avoid sharing of the clothes, soaps, towels or other personal belongings if you have an infected person at home.

A ringworm infection is nothing but a fungal infection. It is wrongly known as ring worm because it was earlier people used to think it was because of a worm and because it used to be round patches on the skin. So chronic ring worm infections is caused when people have tried various over the counter mediations which most of the times contain a steroid. Steroid reduces the itching immediately but it can spread and the infection to different areas. These days we have creams like betnovate, panderm, quadriderm. Several other creams which are very cheap in cost, but contain a steroid and are given by pharmacists knowingly or unknowingly and these cause chronic ring worm infection. Chronic ring worm infection does not respond to older antifungal medications and they respond to newer antifungal medications. A course of antifungal medications can range between 14 days to even 3 months in certain cases but if the patients is regular with the doctor, he can eradicated it and can never have that problem in the future. Certain other precautions that you can take are to wear loose clothes where the clothes are completely dried in sunlight. Avoid sharing the towels and clothes of even your family members because if they have the infection it can spread to you.

Fungal infection of the scalp are called as scalp ring worms. This is not a worm but an organism like a virus or a bacteria, which is not visible to the naked eye, but it cause infections of the hair, skin and nails. The specific group of fungus causes the scalp infections. It belongs to a group of dermatophytic fungus. This is something that is common in school going children. It is characterized by the formation of a greyish or a scaly patch on the scalp and there is a loss of hair. The children usually complain of excessive itching. This is one sort of presentation. The other sort of presentation is when there is formation of pus filled lesions or pustules and pain or mass like appearance on the scalp. The treatment of this is antifungal therapy, which includes oral medications. So this is a skin condition which is well controlled by the usage of application medicines and oral tablets.
