The Evidence is a character-driven police procedural revolving around a San Francisco Police Department inspector forlorn over the murder of his wife. His best friend and partner provides some comic relief. Each episode begins with a voice-over and the presentation of the evidence for the episode's particular crime. The evidence is presented as though it is puzzle pieces and inviting the viewer to 'play along' in solving the mystery. As the story progresses the characters discover the evidence shown to the viewer at the start of the episode. The inspectors are aided by Dr. Sol Goldman, the medical examiner. The multi-episode story arch involves Inspector Cole investigating the murder of his wife Julia.
The Evidence is a Canadian alternative rock band from Calgary, Alberta formed in 2000. The band was originally known as The Failure until 2007. The Evidence is a power trio consisting of members Dean Rud (bass, vocals), Tyler Pickering (guitar, vocals), and Casey Lewis (drums, vocals). To date the band has released three full-length albums, and three music videos.
History
In 2010, the band was the recipient of CFEX's Xposure award which netted the band with $25,000 in tour funding and placed them in rotation in the broadcaster's playlist for the summer.
Edward Ka-Spel (born Edward Francis Sharp, 23 January 1954 in London) is an English singer/songwriter and musician residing in the Netherlands.

Adjusting sense representations for knowledge-based word sense disambiguation
Speaker: Tristan Miller, Technische Universität Darmstadt (Germany)
Abstract: Word sense disambiguation (WSD) – the task of determining which meaning a word carries in a particular context – is a core research problem in computational linguistics. Though it has long been recognized that supervised (i.e., machine learning–based) approaches to WSD can yield impressive results, they require an amount of manually annotated training data that is often too expensive or impractical to obtain. This is a particular problem for under-resourced languages and text domains, and is also a hurdle in well-resourced languages when processing the sort of lexical-semantic anomalies employed for deliberate effect in humour and wordplay. Bootleg: Chasing the Tail of Self-Supervised Named Entity Disambiguation (CIDR 2021)
We present our work on Bootleg, a self-supervised named entity disambiguation (NED) system that links mentions in text to entities in a knowledge base. Bootleg is built to improve disambiguation of entities which appear infrequently in training data, called tail entities. The tail is where disambiguation gets interesting as models cannot rely on learned textual cues. See how we solve this using structured data over entity types and relations. We further discuss the challenges of managing entity embeddings in downstream systems.

In contrast to supervised systems are knowledge-based techniques, which rely only on pre-existing lexical-semantic resources (LSRs) such as dictionaries and thesauri. These techniques are of more general applicability but tend to suffer from lower performance due to the informational gap between the target word's context and the sense descriptions provided by the LSR. In this seminar, we treat the task of extending the efficacy and applicability of knowledge-based WSD, both generally and for the particular case of English puns. In the first part of the talk, we present two approaches for bridging the information gap and thereby improving WSD coverage and accuracy. In the first approach, we supplement the word's context and the LSR's sense descriptions with entries from a distributional thesaurus. The second approach enriches an LSR's sense information by aligning it to other, complementary LSRs. In the second part of the talk, we describe how these techniques, along with evaluation methodologies from traditional WSD, can be adapted for the "disambiguation" of puns, or rather for the automatic identification of their double meanings.

The Evidence - The Oath
The Oath
It's like looking at the spider trying to crawl across my wall
When I'm waiting for the phone to ring, though I know you'll never call
I tried singing my lungs out, I tried screaming in vain
I tried hating you, baby, I tried cursing your name
I tried reading your words to me, it didn't numb the pain
I tried being a different man, but I still feel the same
Why do I put my faith in you, when I know you're going to let me down?
It's like locking all your deadbolts when your enemy's inside
It's like having all your dreams come true and you're still not satisfied
I tried writing you letters, I tried telling you lies
I tried making you see the truth when I looked into your eyes
I tried cutting connections, I tried severing ties
I tried loving myself instead, but it's me that I despis...

Damn That River
Scaredy cat,
You're so afraid to open up and see
The world around you
Juvenile,
Your heart's on trial and your hiding from the truth
But I think it's found you
It's found you
C'est la Vie
Woe is we
Inopportunity seizes your heart
And pushes it to the ground now
So damn it up
Clam it up
Pretend you couldn't care less
About anyone's feelings
Except your own now
Damn that river
Truth is flowing fast
Damn that river
Good things never last
Damn that river
Don't you listen,
Don't you understand

Abstract: Word sense disambiguation (WSD) – the task of determining which meaning a word carries in a particular context – is a core research problem in computational linguistics. Though it has long been recognized that supervised (i.e., machine learning–based) approaches to WSD can yield impressive results, they require an amount of manually annotated training data that is often too expensive or impractical to obtain. This is a particular problem for under-resourced languages and text domains, and is also a hurdle in well-resourced languages when processing the sort of lexical-semantic anomalies employed for deliberate effect in humour and wordplay.

Disambiguation or Entity Linking is the assignment of a knowledge base identifier (Wikidata, Wikipedia) to a named entity. Our goal was to improve an MVP model by adding newly created knowledge while maintaining competitive F1 scores.
Taking an entity linking model from MVP into production in a spaCy-native pipeline architecture posed several data science and engineering challenges, such as hyperparameter estimation and knowledge enhancement, which we addressed by taking advantage of the engineering tools Docker and Kubernetes to semi-automate training as an on-demand job.
We also discuss some of our learnings and process improvements that were needed to strike a balance between data science goals and engineering constraints and present our current work on improving performance through BERT-embedding based contextual similarity.

I tried loving myself instead, but it's me that I despise

Damn That River
Scaredy cat,
You're so afraid to open up and see
The world around you
Juvenile,
Your heart's on trial and your hiding from the truth
But I think it's found you
It's found you
C'est la Vie
Woe is we
Inopportunity seizes your heart
And pushes it to the ground now
So damn it up
Clam it up
Pretend you couldn't care less
About anyone's feelings
Except your own now
Damn that river
Truth is flowing fast
Damn that river
Good things never last
Damn that river
Don't you listen,
Don't you understand
Just keep your there,
Stuck in the sand
I fell so low on the long way home Sinking ever steadily waiting for this heart to stop in between where We die far from this long goodbye Emptiness Where we fall drifting apart Facing the end with regret I cannot [2X] Shadows weaken starting to stir A motion in deception begins to blur I'm focusing on things I can't end Broken ties and wounds that won't mend To the city of ghostly statues And a broad feeling of clamor I'll step to the edge and push ten long until the words hit just like a hammer Emptiness Where we fall drifting apart Facing the end with regret I cannot [2X] And all that I have ever loved has now turned empty and all that I have Ever kept, is in this long goodbye When You fall, I will fall with Heaven in between this breath beneath When You fall, I will fall with Heaven in between this breath beneath I bid farewell to this year long wrapped in wings To the shameless, to The faceless, You will forever remain... nameless
