Duchess of York is the principal courtesy title held by the wife of the Duke of York. The title is gained with marriage alone and is forfeited upon divorce. Three of the eleven Dukes of York either did not marry or had already assumed the throne prior to marriage, whilst two of the dukes married twice, therefore there have only ever been ten Duchesses of York. It is said that the positions of Duke and Duchess of York are charmed, because the title is created every time, or these women become queen consorts.
Duchesses of York
The ten Duchesses of York (and the dates the individuals held that title) are as follows:
The Duchess (1813–1836) was a British Thoroughbredracehorse and broodmare best known for winning the classicSt Leger Stakes in 1816. In a racing career which lasted from March 1815 until October 1819 she competed in thirty-three races and won nineteen times. She was still unnamed when winning three races as a two-year-old in 1815, when she was one of the leading juveniles in the north of England. In the following year she was named Duchess of Leven, which was shortened to The Duchess when she was sold to Sir Bellingham Graham. She won seven of her nine races as a three-year-old, including the Gold Cup at Pontefract and the St Leger at Doncaster. The Duchess remained in training for a further three seasons, winning five times in 1817, twice in 1818 and twice in 1819, beating many leading horses of the time including Blacklock, Doctor Syntax, Rhoda and Filho da Puta. After her retirement from racing, The Duchess had some success as a broodmare.
Background
The Duchess was a bay mare bred by Mr Ellerker and was the fifth of eight foals produced by Ellerker's mare Miss Nancy (1803–1817). The Duchess was the only classic winner sired by Cardinal York, a son of Sir Peter Teazle. Cardinal York was based at Mr T Kirby's stable at York, where he was standing at a fee of seven guineas in 1816.
Set in the late 18th century, the story follows the life of Georgiana Cavendish, Duchess of Devonshire. Well known for her beauty and fashion sense, she is also remembered for her extravagance and gambling habits. Despite the blatant infidelities of her husband, the cold and much older William Cavendish, the 5th Duke of Devonshire, Georgiana thrives, becoming a fashion icon, a doting mother, a shrewd political operator, and darling of the common people. In befriending Lady Bess Foster, Georgiana is crushed when Bess and The Duke begin an affair. Despite Georgiana's anger, the Duke wants Bess to remain living with them. Bess later explains to Georgiana that the reason she began the affair with the Duke was so that she could get her children back. The Duke wants a male heir, which the Duchess has not yet provided. The idea is that Bess can, since she already has three sons, of whom the Duke is very fond, treating them as if they were his own.
The Dutchess is the debut studio album by American singer Fergie. It was released on September 13, 2006, by A&M Records and the will.i.am Music Group as her first solo album since the break from her band The Black Eyed Peas. The album was recorded between The Black Eyed Peas' tour in 2005, and the songs were written throughout the last 8 years that preceded its release. While developing the album, Fergie wanted to create an autobiographical album that would be more intimate between her and the listener. By doing so, the album experiments with different music genres, including hip-hop, reggae, punk-rock, pop, and soul. Lyrically, The Dutchess has themes about love and critics, while also dealing with her drug abuse and addiction.
Upon its release, The Dutchess received mixed reviews from music critics, with many praising its production, calling it one of the most eclectic and adventurous albums of 2006, but some criticized the album's lyrical content and believed the material was not strong for her voice. It became a commercial success, reaching number 2 on the US Billboard 200 and spending 94 weeks inside the chart, while also topping the Australian Albums Charts and becoming a worldwide success, reaching platinum status in over eight countries. It sold almost 4 million copies in the United States and over 8 million copies worldwide.
York (i/ˈjɔːrk/) is a historic walled city at the confluence of the rivers Ouse and Foss in North Yorkshire, England, and is the traditional county town of Yorkshire to which it gives its name. The city has a rich heritage and has provided the backdrop to major political events in England throughout much of its two millennia of existence. The city offers a wealth of historic attractions, of which York Minster is the most prominent, and a variety of cultural and sporting activities making it a popular tourist destination for millions.
In the 19thcentury, York became a hub of the railway network and a confectionery manufacturing centre. In recent decades, the economy of York has moved from being dominated by its confectionery and railway-related industries to one that provides services. The University of York and health services have become major employers, whilst tourism has become an important element of the local economy.
Torsten Stenzel began his musical career early in his childhood, learning the piano from the age of five when he began his classical training. In the early 1990s his musical orientation changed, and he discovered the growing techno/house movement. He built his own recording studio. Torsten Stenzel is credited for several gold and platinum awards, an 'Echo' nomination and over three million record sales.
Jörg Stenzel has, since the age of eleven, been interested in stringed instruments, the guitar in particular. The two brothers combined their talents in 1997 and project 'York' was born.
York has released four successful UKsingles. Their first single, "The Awakening", reached #11 in the UK Singles Chart in October 1999. Their second single, "On The Beach" (which sampledChris Rea's song, "On The Beach") was their biggest hit, the 'CRW edit' helped the single to reach #4 in the UK chart in June 2000, and it sold over 200,000 copies. The next chart entry "Farewell To The Moon" reached #37 in November 2000. Their final UK hit single to date was "The Fields of Love" which featured ATB. It reached #16 in January 2001.
Duchess of Cornwall visits Egyptian horse and donkey hospital on final day of royal tour
The Duchess of Cornwall has visited the site of an animal sanctuary for horses and donkeys which was founded with the help of Daily Telegraph
readers.
In 1931, the wife of an Army officer was so horrified to find Britain's loyal war horses working into old age on the streets of Egypt that she wrote to The Telegraph pleading with its readers for help.
The result was £20,000 in donations and a refuge for 5,000 of those horses saved from suffering and ending their lives in peace.

Big Horse Herd On the Move at Duchess Sanctuary
At the Duchess Sanctuary in Oregon, we care for almost 190 horses. Many of them were saved from the PMU, or Pregnant Mare Urine industry. In the PMU barns they stood pregnant in narrow tie stalls for months at a time while their urine was collected to make hormone replacement therapy drugs for women.
But now at the sanctuary, they've left that unhappy life behind, and instead spend their days out on hundreds of acres of grass, hills, and trees. They have a permanent safe home here and we will care for them to the end of their lives. During the grazing season, we rotate the big herd of about 125 horses through different pastures. This keeps the grass healthy and the horses happy. Right now it's peak grass growing season, and we are moving the herd every few days. Although I've witnessed t...

Duchess Horse Sanctuary Open House Part I
A public open house at the Duchess Horse Sanctuary was held on 7 June 2014. The 1,120-acre grassy facility on rolling hills near Oakland, Or. is operated by Fund for Animals in partnership with HSUS.
Duchess was established in 2008 for nearly 200 formerly abused, abandoned, neglected & homeless horses. Mares and their offspring rescued from the pregnant mare urine (PMU) industry make up most of the herd. We also saw orphaned mustangs and horses rescued from auctions and feedlots. Duchess Sanctuary is a first-class operation where the animals are safe, loved and very well cared for.
In this video, volunteers Mel and Sean took us on a tour of the area where horses with special needs are cared for. Then volunteer Brad gave us a short talk in the dry lot area.

The herd rumbles through the gate, a few horses kick up their heels on the way by, and 125 happy horses drop their heads to graze fresh green grass.
