"The Doom that Came to Sarnath" (1920) is an early short story by H. P. Lovecraft. It is written in a mythic/fairy tale style and is associated with his Dream Cycle. It was first published in The Scot, a Scottish amateur fiction magazine, in June 1920.
The influence of Lord Dunsany on the story can be seen in the reference to a throne "wrought of one piece of ivory, though no man lives who knows whence so vast a piece could have come", which evokes the gate "carved out of one solid piece" of ivory in Dunsany's "Idle Days on the Yann".
Though Sarnath is a historical city in India —the place where the Buddha first taught— Lovecraft said that he thought he invented the name independently.
Synopsis
According to the tale, more than 10,000 years ago, a race of shepherd people colonized the banks of the river Ai in a land called Mnar, forming the cities of Thraa, Ilarnek, and Kadatheron (not to be confused with Kadath), which rose to great intellectual and mercantile prowess. Craving more land, a group of these hardy people migrated to the shores of a lonely and vast lake at the heart of Mnar, founding the metropolis of Sarnath.
Isipatana is mentioned by the Buddha as one of the four places of pilgrimage which his devout followers should visit, if they wanted to visit a place for that reason. It was also the site of the Buddha's Dhammacakkappavattana Sutta, which was his first teaching after attaining enlightenment, in which he taught the four noble truths and the teachings associated with it.
Origin of names
Sarnath has been variously known as Mrigadava, Migadāya, Rishipattana and Isipatana throughout its long history.
Mrigadava means "deer-park". Isipatana is the name used in the Pali Canon, and means the place where holy men (Pali: isi, Sanskrit: rishi) landed.
Sarnath is one of the Four Greatest Places of Buddhist Pilgrimage. Lumbini, Bodhgaya and Kushinagar being the rest of the three greatest places of pilgrimage.

Sarnath is located around 10 kilometres from the ancient city of Varanasi and is one of the most important centres of pilgrimage for Buddhists.
After attaining enlightenment at Uruvela, Budhha was undecided about teaching Dhamma to others, but on inspiration from Brahma, he set out to teach the five ascetics who have served him for six years but left him after he abandoned the path of self-mortification.
Budhha reached the Deer park on a full moon night of Asadha month, and that very night he gave his first sermon. The second sermon given by Buddha is called Anattalakkhana Sutta. In Sarnath Buddha also preached one of the richest men of his time, named Yash and his 54 followers and they all became Arahants.
Later Buddha asked all these 60 Arahants to go in different directions with no two Arahants going on the same road, thus establishing the order of monks or Sangha.
Emperor Ashoka visited this place in 249 BC and erected several important monuments to mark this pilgrimage, including Dhamek Stupa, Dharmarajika Stupa and Ashoka Pillar with the lion capital atop. This capital is now India’s national symbol.
The monastic settlement of Sarnath was destroyed by the end of the 12th century during the Turkish invasion. During the next few centuries, it was gradually deserted and erased from the memory of people. It remained lost till 1836 when British archaeologist rediscovered the site.
After remaining lost and deserted for more than 800 years, today, Sarnath has gradually become one of the most visited places in India and one of the most important centres of Buddhist pilgrimage in the world.

We took a quick food break and headed to Sarnath, the birthplace of Buddhism. The deer park in Sarnath is where Gautama Buddha first taught the Dhamma, and where the Buddhist Sangha came into existence through the enlightenment of Kondanna.
We headed back to Varanasi to end our Indian Street Food tour. We stopped at Deena Chat shop to try four dishes, Golgappas, Aloo Tikki, Tomato Chaat and Chura Matar. They were all so good, but my favorite was Chura Matar!
I hope you loved this Indian Street Food tour of Varanasi, and side trip to Sarnath! If you liked the video please give me a thumbs up, comment below and subscribe to my channel!

A thousand years has passed such wealth and golden reign A time of growth and no pain a thousand years has gone Such wealth and golden lies that time of growth amount to nothing but doom In towers once so stern upholding wisdom Where knowledge was enthroned they laugh as jesters A thousand years did pass and then came doom To sweep away the filth festering the soil Weeded from the ground torn away to give place for life
