Lithic Reduction at a Middle Woodland Site in Bartow County, Georgia
Presentation by Dane Roberts and Dr. Terry Powis
The Middle Woodland period witnessed elaborate social and economic networks that involved a number of different type sites. While the Hopewell Interaction Sphere typifies the level of trade and exchange among large sites like Leake located in north Georgia, smaller sites were engaged in resource extraction activities. Investigations at the George Smith Site, located in Bartow County, Georgia near the Leake and Hardin Bridge sites, have revealed significant quantities of lithic material that identify it as a short-term logistical camp. This paper seeks to examine the lithic data to address the socio-economic relationship between these three sites.

Levallois Core Technology: An Alternative Way of Making Stone Tools
In this video, Dr. James Dilley explores the Mousterian (Mode 3) style of flintknapping known as “prepared core technology” or the “Levallois technique”. The Levallois technique requires a high level of skill and cognition to plan several steps ahead during the flintknapping process (Schlanger 1996) as the shape and preparation of the core determines the shape of the flakes that are removed. By creating a prepared core, successfully removed flakes are detached which have a size and shape determined to some extent by the maker. This allows a flintknapper to detach large flakes with razor sharp edges that would make suitable cutting tools, or triangular flakes suitable for spear points.

Lithic Technology
Lithic technology is a reductive technology that involves removing flakes from a core of glass or cryptocrystalline rock, such as flint or chert, in order to achieve a desired shape, or to use the flakes themselves as blanks that the knapper can shape into tools. This video is a brief introduction to stone-tool technology with an emphasis on hard-hammer percussion flaking and retouch by pressure flaking.

Lithic Analysis in Archaeology
This video introduces some of the most basic aspects of observing and making measurements on the products of flintknapping, with emphasis on debitage (the flakes removed from a core). It also introduces the chaîne opératoire as a theoretical and conceptual tool for the analysis of lithic and other technologies.

Hello everybody now those under the age of 15 aren't gonna know what this is but this is the first core 2 duo. It's the e6700 and it actually paved for intel modern multi-core CPUs as we know them. It came out 17 years ago as a mid-range processor but a lot has changed since then. We're gonna take a look at how it holds up in a modern environment with modern games and find out what exactly made this processor so good.
So it's 2005, and the first dual-core chips are hitting the market with Intel’s Pentium Ds and AMD’s Athlon X2 series. At the time Intel was using its problematic netburst architecture and knew it needed a complete redesign if it wanted to stay competitive. So they came out with the Core 2 duo series as a part of the brand new “core” microarchitecture and the Conroe family.
It was nothing short of amazing and part of their success comes from a thing called wide dynamic execution and macro fusion. Wide dynamic execution basically allows the processor to work on multiple instructions in parallel, rather than sequentially. So CPUs fetch the instruction and decode it into micro-operations called u ops. Then Out-of-Order Execution rearranges the order of uops based on processing availability and dependencies. Macro fusion then combines pairs of these instructions into a single uop, meaning these chips were able to process more instructions per clock cycle than ever before
They also shortened the pipeline to 14 stages down from Netburst’s 31. Having a longer pipeline can actually be beneficial and can allow for higher clock speeds, and in the early 2000s, everyone was trying to clock their chips as fast as possible. But a longer pipeline also increases the penalty of mispredicted branches which forces the CPU to discard its predictions and flush the pipeline. Having a shorter pipeline meant less predicted processing stages were lost and the CPU could recover much quicker.
But arguably the important change was to the advanced smart cache. It uses prefetch algorithms to collect data from the memory controller before it is needed and stores it in the L2 cache. They had a similar setup in their netburst chips, but what made it advanced was its ability to dynamically allocate cache space for both of the cores using an arbitration bus. Previous netburst chips had 2 independent caches connected via the system bus which caused a lot of latency. Each netburst core needed to store its own data even if it was identical to that of the other core. Luckily Conroe fixed this issue with this new cache designed specifically for multi-core chips.
So what did our chip actually come with?
Well, the core 2 Duo e6700 obviously had 2 cores, and also 2 threads with a 65-watt tdp, a clock speed of 2.67 GHz, and 4 MB of L2 cache. Although it didn't have integrated graphics, when compared to modern CPUs, the only feature it really lacks is hyperthreading and support for the SSE4 instruction set which can cause issues in modern games.
Now I bought this CPU for $15 on eBay and threw it in an Inspiron 530 with 8 GB of DDR2 memory, Windows 7, a 7200 rpm hard drive, and an RTX 3060. Generally, a 15-year age gap of any kind is a red flag, but I wanted to make sure the e6700 was not bottlenecked by the GPU. In fact, I considered building an entire High-end LGA 775 setup just to make sure the processor was running as fast as possible.

This statement was inspired by the observation that so many aspects of the physical world seem to be describable and predictable by mathematical equations to incredible precision especially as quantum phenomena. But quantum phenomena have no subjective qualities and have questionable physicality. They seem to be completely describable by only numbers, and their behavior precisely defined by equations. In a sense, the quantum world is made of math. So does that mean the universe is made of math too? If you believe the Mathematical Universe Hypothesis then yes. And so are you.

In his essay “The Unreasonable Effectiveness of Mathematics”, the physicist Eugine Wigner said that “the enormous usefulness of mathematics in the natural sciences is something bordering on the mysterious”.

We are the Numberblocks! Little blocks with big ideas, having a ton of number fun. Learn how to add, subtract and count the fun and educational way! In this educational CBeebies cartoon for kids, children can learn how to count with basic maths sums, using addition and subtraction with singular blocks that join together to make increasingly bigger numbers.

Huge thanks to Chris Hadfield and for joining me for a day of mathematics. Stay tuned for our next video where we derive the rocket equation!
You can go and watch Lucie Green's first video with Chris Hadfield right now: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Avwip5hpVOE

Free resources for teachers!
We have a complete guide to the mathematics in this video as well as some student worksheets and activities.

I should also say we went to Florida to film in February 2020, before the pandemic. Which is why it all looks so normal. It's surreal to think about it now!
CORRECTIONS
- A few people have pointed out that I’m assuming a circular orbit. Yes indeed: I should have made it clearer in the video we were ignoring elliptical orbits as near-Earth is pretty much perfectly circular.
- And people are very upset I said I was in Orlando. Which was my fault: I meant to say “near Orlando” to help non-USA people orient themselves. I figured more people know where Orlando is (roughly) than Cape Canaveral. If it helps: Chris also pointed out my mistake (in the nicest way possible) once that shot was over but we didn’t have time to re-do it.
- Let me know if you spot any other mistakes!
Thanks to my Patreons who mean I can endure the hardship of a trip to Florida to hang out with an astronaut. Only kidding. I paid for that bit. But they covered the extra production costs. Here is a random subset of those fine Patreon People:

Vector spaces are one of the fundamental objects you study in abstract algebra. They are a significant generalization of the 2- and 3-dimensional vectors you study in science. In this lesson we talk about the definition of a vector space and give a few surprising examples.
