‘If members want to continue interjecting, I’ll eject them,’ Smith snaps. When Scott Morrison fails to respond quickly to a question from the opposition, Smith warn the prime minister, ‘I’m asking you to return to the question,’ Morrison quickly responds, ‘Happy to do that, Mr Speaker.’
Smith then says: ‘I don’t care whether you’re happy or not. You need to return to the question'.

Tony Smith to resign as speaker on November 22
Speaker of the house Tony Smith has announced he is resigning from his position on November 22.
“As you are aware a new senate president was elected just last Monday, so it’s important for the Parliament that I take the next few weeks to work with him on a whole range of matter that we have joint responsibility for here in the building,” he said.
“I also want to give all members early notice of my decision so they can consider the vacancy.”
Mr Smith said he was resigning because he wanted to finish his career in government as a backbencher, wanted to speak in the house again and focus on his electorate.
“It’s not because I’m tired of the job, I doubt I would ever tire of it, it’s not certainly not because I’m tired of pulling ministers or members into line, I think you know, I would ...

Tony Smith reminds the House that it does not have to comply with Senate orders
4/12/2019 "Just before I call the minister, I'm going to say that any questions can be answered, but, as a matter of principle on behalf of all members of the House of Representatives, there is absolutely no obligation to comply with a Senate order. That's an important principle. Indeed, there have been requests in the past that members of this House appear at Senate hearings. Former Prime Minister Keating responded more colourfully than I am now.
And I'm just going to say on behalf of all members of this House: the Senate has no business seeking members of this House to comply with anything they seek to do. As you can tell, my attitude to the first part of the question—"

Tony Burke: Parliament has become a 'house of chaos'
Shadow Industrial Relations Minister Tony Burke says Canberra has descended into a “house of chaos” after a “bizarre” final two weeks of parliamentary sitting.
“I haven’t seen a fortnight like this one and it’s hard to keep up with the number of bizarre things that have been happening,” he told Sky News Australia.
“They’re not paying attention, we had a member of parliament speak on the wrong bill, deliver a speech on a bill that apparently the member had voted on last week but had another go even though something else was before us.
“We’ve had people crossing the floor, back and forth, all over the place ... I’ve never seen anything like it, it’s as simple as that.

“Mr Morrison will come to the dispatch box each day and open up with, ‘It’s all going well, it’s all fantastic’, then just get stuck into Labor and gradually get angrier as Question Time goes on.
“But if you look at the faces behind him, they know that this is not a government that’s delivering for the country.”
