"What is Apoptosis?" The Apoptotic Pathways and the Caspase Cascade
This 3D medical animation explains the functioning of the extrinsic and intrinsic apoptotic pathways. We start off by taking a look at the important role apoptosis plays in growth and development as well as removing DNA damaged cells. Then we see how activation of the caspase cascade occurs in each external and internal signalling pathway. Lastly we get a glimpse of cancer cells and their ability to block apoptosis.

Apoptosis: Programmed Cell Death
We've touched on apoptosis before, especially when we learned about cancer in the biochemistry series. But let's a closer look. We know that apoptosis is programmed cell death, a failsafe mechanism whereby faulty cells that pose a threat to an organism can be systematically destroyed. How does this work? Where do the signals come from and how do they propagate? What kinds of proteins are involved in carrying out this activity? Come and see!

Apoptosis - Introduction, Morphologic Changes and Mechanism
#apoptosis #pathology #cellinjury
Apoptosis, also called “programmed cell death” is the process where the cell regulates its own death through the production of certain enzymes. These enzymes cause degradation of nuclear and cytoplasmic DNA and the cell breaks into fragments called apoptotic bodies. Apoptotic bodies are then gobbled up by phagocytes.
