0:00 Introduction
Natural remedies and traditional medicine have been around for centuries, each with its own unique approach to healing the body. While traditional medicine uses pharmaceuticals and other medical interventions to treat various illnesses, natural remedies use natural substances and techniques to promote overall health and wellness.
The question arises: are natural remedies better than traditional medicine? The answer is not a simple one, as both have their own advantages and disadvantages.
Natural remedies use herbs, plants, and other natural substances that have been used for centuries for their medicinal properties. These remedies are often free from harsh chemicals and side effects commonly associated with traditional medicines. They are often used to treat common ailments such as colds, headaches, and stomach issues.
Traditional medicine, on the other hand, uses a variety of medical interventions such as surgery, radiation therapy, and pharmaceuticals to treat various illnesses. These interventions have been developed over time and are often backed by extensive research and clinical trials.
While both natural remedies and traditional medicine have their place in the world of healthcare, it's important to note that they both have their limitations. Natural remedies may not be effective in treating more serious illnesses or conditions that require medical intervention, while traditional medicine may come with significant side effects and risks.
It's also worth noting that natural remedies and traditional medicine can often be used in conjunction with one another. For example, someone with chronic pain may use natural remedies such as acupuncture or herbal supplements alongside traditional pain medications.
Ultimately, the decision of whether to use natural remedies or traditional medicine should be based on individual needs and preferences. It's important to do research, consult with healthcare professionals, and make informed decisions about one's own healthcare.
In conclusion, natural remedies and traditional medicine both have their pros and cons. It's up to each individual to decide what approach to take when it comes to their own health and wellness. The most important thing is to prioritize self-care and make informed decisions about one's healthcare.

Traditional medicine, particularly herbal remedies have been an integral resource for health for millennia in communities around the world, and it is still a mainstay for some with inequities in access to conventional medicine. They have made significant contributions to human health through their health promotive, curative and rehabilitative properties and in the prevention of illnesses. Many herbal medicines used traditionally have become modern medicines through drug development - morphine, aspirin, and artemisinin are some notable examples. Yet, herbal medicine is not fully acceptable and integrated in mainstream medicine. This talk focuses on proposing a strategy for harnessing the potential contribution of traditional medicine in healthcare– supported by modern science and principles of scientific validation. DEVINA LOBINE is an enthusiastic bio-scientist. Her research interest is centered on ethno-pharmacology, drug discovery and development on non-communicable diseases. She holds a degree in Agricultural Biotechnology and PhD in the field of Natural Products. Devina has several years of practical and applied experience in various fields of life sciences and has authored/co-authored over 60 publications. She was awarded the 2020 Sub-Saharan Africa Young Talents-L'Oreal-UNESCO for Women in Science prize for her research work. As Science leader, Devina is passionately engaged on numerous projects and activities related to STEM agenda.
