What does “wabi-sabi” mean, really?
What the hell does Wabi-sabi mean? There are many ways to define it but one is the joy you feel at the sight or feeling of imperfection. Let’s look at an example.
The founding fathers of Japanese tea ceremony 🍵 as we know it today are Takeno Joo and his student, Sen-no-Rikyu.
One day when Rikyu was still an awkward teenager, Joo told him to go sweep the garden outside. So Rikyu goes out with a broom, but the garden is already immaculately clean. So Rikyu is like, what in the exquisite Fukuokan seafood did he want me to do? That guy and his Zen riddles 😫!!
But he looked at the perfectly clean garden and thought for a bit 🤔, and shook a branch of a tree. A few maple leaves scattered on the ground.
Joo saw this and he was like… “You know a thing or two about wabi-sabi.”

"Gion Festival: Kikusui Float Tea Ceremony and Historical Overview" / 祇園祭菊水鉾お茶席
The Gion Festival's Kikusui Float Tea Ceremony (Kikusuihoko Ochaseki) is held in honor of the Kikusui Float, which derives its name from the famous Kikusui Well located at Daikoku-an, the residence of tea master Takeno Jōō, who was also the mentor of Sen no Rikyū. The tea ceremony is conducted by the Omotesenke, Urasenke, and Enshū-ryū schools of tea. During the tea ceremony, participants drink Amagiku dew and are served a special wagashi called "Shitadari," inspired by the child doll representing the dance of Kikujidō, who is believed to have lived for 700 years. By the way, Shitadari is a sweet made with black sugar and is known as Kohakukan. It is also said that visitors to the Kikusui Float Tea Ceremony can take home the plates used for serving the sweets (to be confirmed).

Some scholars say that wabi-sabi is a positive response to the spotting of beauty in something that seems imperfect ☺️!

The Omotesenke school is one of the three main schools of the Japanese tea ceremony. It is considered the original school of the Sen family's tea ceremony, established by Sen no Rikyū, and traces its roots back to his grandson Sen Sōtan, specifically his third son, Erimoto Sōsa. The term "Omotesenke" is used to distinguish it from the Urasenke school.
The Urasenke school is another of the three main schools of the Japanese tea ceremony. It originated from the youngest son of Sen Sōtan, Sōsa's grandson, Sen Sōshitsu. The name "Urasenke" refers to the fact that the Urasenke tearoom, Konnichian, is situated behind the Omotesenke tearoom, Fushinan.
Enshū-ryū is a school of tea ceremony that developed among the samurai class. It was founded by Kobori Enshū, a disciple of the tea master Furuta Oribe. Enshū-ryū combines the introspective concepts of "wabi" and "sabi" with its own unique sense of aesthetics called "kirei-sabi."
【Gion Festival: Historical Overview】
The Gion Festival (Gion Matsuri) originated in 869 during the early Heian period when a nationwide epidemic occurred. It was believed to be a curse from the deities Gozu Tennō and Susanoo-no-Mikoto. Urabe no Hiramaro erected 66 floats at the Shinsen-en garden to cleanse impurities by transferring evil spirits and to honor the deity Gozu Tennō, considered an incarnation of the Yakushi Nyorai. Additionally, three portable shrines were sent from the Yasaka Shrine, which venerates Gozu Tennō as the main deity, to pray for the eradication of the epidemic. The Gion Goryōe (Gion Spirit Festival) originated from this event. Since 970 (Tenroku 1), the festival has been held annually on June 14th.
Gion Festival: Historical Timeline and Origins (869-)
【Kikusui Float: Historical Overview】
The exact origin of the Kikusui Float (Kikusuihoko or Kikusuiboko) is unclear. The "Gion Shakki" (Records of Gion Shrine) in the "Gion Shaki" Vol. 15 (Records of Yasaka Shrine) mentions the "Kikusuihoko" and "Tomorisuhoko" floats between Nishiki-Koji and Shijo, indicating their existence before the onset of the Ōnin War (1467-1477). The Kikusui Float is associated with Daikoku-an, the residence of tea master Takeno Jōō, during the late Muromachi period. It derives its name from the famous Kikusui Well (Kikusuii) located on the premises. Takeno Jōō, after coming to Kyoto at the age of 24 and learning tea ceremony from Sanjo Nishi Sanetaka, classical literature, renga, and tea ceremony from Fujiwara no Sōri, established Daikoku-an to pursue the Kikusui Well. He resided there until the age of 36 before returning to Sakai. Takeno Jōō created a simplified version of the Wabi-style tea room called "Wabisuki" or "Chabuton." The Kikusui Float was destroyed in the Donnodayake fire of 1864 (Genji 1) but was revived after 88 years in 1952. It participated in the festival with a temporary float, and in 1953, the completion ceremony was held, marking its return with the main float.
