China's Forgotten History in Indonesia: Lanfang Republic
Predating both the Republic of Ezo and Republic of Formosa, the now mostly forgotten Lanfang Republic technically was the first republic in Asia and remained independent, more or less, until Dutch occupation in 1884.
During the 18th century, the sultanates of Sambas, Sukadana, and Landank over in western Borneo needed laborers to work their lucrativce gold and tin mines. This attracted hundreds, if not thousands, of Chinese, who soon established "gongsi" or companies to supervise business matters. These gongsi, sometimes transliterated as kongsi, also mediated interaction with local entities, like the sultanates, provideded some basic social services, and importantly protected their workers.

China is home to one of the world's oldest civilizations. The history of China splits into periods of time called dynasties, the first one being the Xia Dynasty (pronounced like shaw) over 4000 years ago. And during the Qin Dynasty, the Great Wall of China was built, and the people developed advanced technology in mathematics and infrastructure. The last emperor was overthrown in 1912, and the country became a republic. But then in 1949, the current communist government overthrew the republic following a civil war.
There are so many cool attractions and landmarks to visit in China. Besides the Great Wall of China, there is the site of the terracotta army, a series of statues that represent Chinese warriors. They were buried under ground for more than 2,000 years! The Forbidden City is another great attraction, a place that was home to 24 of China's emperors. It was built around 1420 AD. Can you guess why it's called the forbidden city?

The founding father of what came to be known as the Lanfang Gongsi was Low Fong Pak (also known as Luo Fangbo), a Hakka from modern Guangdong.
Anyway, following a war against the Mempawah Kingdom, in 1777, Low proclaimed the Lanfang Republic and was himself elected as the country's first president by popular vote. Things looked good for the upstart republic, util the arrival of the Dutch. The First Kongsi War or the 1823 West-Kalimantan Uprising would forshadow other conflicts with the rising colonial power, which ultimately brought about the Lanfang Republic's demise.

Made in the aftermath of the Chinese Revolution, this profile of Taiwan shows the Nationalist Chinese government in exile, and highlights the fact that the island is now the sanctuary of the "free Chinese". Taipei is shown, the seat of government of Nationalist China, and profiles are shown of native Taiwanese and the immigrant Chinese and exiled citizens of China. At the 3:00 mark, the Taipei airport is seen, with the "Welcome to Free China" sign prominently placed at the tarmac. Full of Cold War rhetoric, the film spends a lot of screen time showing the training of the Taiwanese Army and Air Forces, as well as the Navy. The Free Chinese Air Force is seen at the 5:30 mark, patrolling the "Bamboo Curtain" with surplus U.S. P-47 Thunderbolts. A full-scale military landing exercise is shown at the 6:45 mark, while the narrator speaks about how this is a preliminary / preparatory exercise of the type that will be conducted in the future against mainland China. Of course, such an invasion remained completely impractical and the thing of fantasy, not reality, in the decades that followed.
Taiwan, officially the Republic of China, is a sovereign state in East Asia. The Republic of China, originally based in mainland China, now governs the island of Taiwan, which makes up over 99% of its territory, as well as Penghu, Kinmen, Matsu, and other minor islands. Neighboring states include the People's Republic of China (PRC) to the west, Japan to the east and northeast, and the Philippines to the south. Taiwan is one of the most densely populated countries in the world with a population density of 648 people per km2 in March 2015. Taipei is the seat of the central government, and together with the surrounding cities of New Taipei and Keelung forms the largest metropolitan area on the island.
The island of Taiwan (formerly known as "Formosa") was mainly inhabited by Taiwanese aborigines until the Dutch and Spanish settlement during the Age of Discovery in the 17th century, when Han Chinese began immigrating to the island. In 1662, the pro-Ming loyalist Koxinga expelled the Dutch and established the first Han Chinese polity on the island, the Kingdom of Tungning. The Qing dynasty of China later defeated the kingdom and annexed Taiwan. By the time Taiwan was ceded to Japan in 1895, the majority of Taiwan's inhabitants were Han Chinese either by ancestry or by assimilation. The Republic of China (ROC) was established in mainland China in 1912. After Japan's surrender in 1945, the ROC assumed its control of Taiwan. Following the Chinese civil war, the Communist Party of China took full control of mainland China and founded the People's Republic of China (PRC) in 1949. The ROC relocated its government to Taiwan, and its jurisdiction became limited to Taiwan and its surrounding islands, with the main island making up 99% of its de facto territory. Despite this, the ROC continued to represent China at the United Nations until 1971, when the PRC assumed China's seat via Resolution 2758 and the ROC lost its UN membership. International recognition of the ROC has gradually eroded as most countries switched recognition to the PRC. 21 UN member states and the Holy See currently maintain official diplomatic relations with the ROC. It has unofficial ties with most other states via its representative offices.

President Joe Biden said after his meeting Monday with Chinese President Xi Jinping that he is confident China is not preparing to attack Taiwan.
"I'm committed to keeping the lines of communications open between you and me personally, but also our governments across the board," Biden told Xi on Monday, emphasizing both countries share a responsibility to "manage our differences, prevent competition from becoming anything ever to near conflict, and to find ways to work together on urgent global issues that require our mutual cooperation."
Xi responded: "The world has come to a crossroads. Where to go from here – this is a question that is not only on our mind but also on the mind of all countries. The world expects that China and the United States will properly handle the relationship."

Typhoon Kong-rey makes landfall in Taiwan; largest storm to hit island in three decades
Typhoon Kong-rey has made landfall in Taiwan, claiming at least one life and injuring dozens more. While the storm has been downgraded from a super typhoon, intense wind and rain caused a near-shutdown of the island. Schools and offices were shut, while hundreds of local and international flights and ferry services were grounded. Kong-rey is the biggest to land since 1996, with a radius of 320km -- almost big enough to engulf all of Taiwan. Conditions are expected to remain severe until early tomorrow. Victoria Jen reports.

A look at the complex political situation on the island of Taiwan. The island of Taiwan is administered by the Republic of China, which lost the Chinese Civil War to the Communists which control the mainland to this day, proclaiming the People's Republic of China in 1949.
Both the ROC and the PRC claim to be the legitimate government of China. Taiwan is a de facto independent country but is not a member of the United Nations since being replaced in 1971 by the PRC.
The current situation is stuck in a stalemate with the two ways of resolving the dispute (unification and independence) both seeming very unlikely to happen any time soon.

Shark Fishery Images from Taiwan, Province of China Underline Global Threat | Pew
New images from a fishing port in Taiwan, Province of China underline the threat to sharks around the world. Fishermen kill up to 73 million sharks annually in order to satisfy the demand for shark fin soup. While the scale of the trade in Taiwan, Province of China is massive, globally it is just the fourth largest fisher of sharks, after Indonesia, India and Spain.

‘I made a mistake. I love and respect Chinese people,’ Cena said to his 600,000 fans on his Chinese Weibo account. China sees Taiwan as a part of its own territory, and rejects any reference to the self-governed island as an independent state.

Taiwan forces Qatar to remove Chinese province reference on FIFA World Cup identification card
Taiwan objected strongly to Qatar's move after it listed as a 'province of China' in an online application form ahead of this year's FIFA World Cup and forced it rectify the 'error'. This after the dropdown menu on the website to apply for Hayya card had showed 'Taiwan, Province of China'. The listing had angered Taiwanese officials who then requested organisers to change the name to 'Taiwan' following which Qatar rectified the 'error'. Watch this video to know more.

On February 27, Weibo’s top search rankings had over three million results for a familiar yet controversial name: Taiwan Province. A look inside the iPhone’s recently updated Apple Maps for China’s market shows what the fuss is all about: “Taiwan Province” is written over the island of Taiwan.

I think this is just them getting excited over nothing. In the real world, it’s a simple matter that we don’t belong to them.
Member of public
Over there they have their own political reasons, so we can’t be too demanding because we don’t have any control over what they do.
Compared to flabbergasted Taiwanese, many Chinese internet users were so excited about the change that they posted comments online. One said the name should’ve been like this all along while another was happy to announce that the maps of AutoNavi Software and Baidu were updated to show Taiwan Province as well. But then some Chinese netizens took a self-mocking approach. One user pointed out that Apple is surely clever enough to have two different names for Taiwan: one within the Great Firewall and one outside of it. And another user reminded readers that in the virtual world he used to falsely claim that an entertainment star he had a crush on was his girlfriend. So, he believes Chinese are essentially lying to themselves.
Hong Kong citizen
At the end of the day China’s market is quite big, with many people having their investments there and people are doing business in China. So, sometimes you have no choice but to do what they want to do.
The data for Apple Maps is primarily provided by Dutch location technology company TomTom. But China’s government policy has put restrictions into place, which has resulted in Apple Maps having two data suppliers in the Chinese market: China’s own AutoNavi Software and Hong Kong’s MapKing. But in other countries Apple Maps still shows Taiwan, without the word “Province” alongside it. It seems that even in map software, there seems to be “one Taiwan with respective interpretations.”
