Secretive Giant TSMC’s $100 Billion Plan To Fix The Chip Shortage

Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Company makes 24% of all the world's chips, and 92% of the most advanced ones found in today's iPhones, fighter jets and supercomputers. Now TSMC is building America's first 5-nanometer fabrication plant, hoping to reverse a decades-long trend of the U.S. losing chip manufacturing to Asia. CNBC got an exclusive tour of the $12 billion fab that will start production in 2024.
As the world grapples with an ongoing chip shortage, a quiet giant among chipmakers has committed to investing $100 billion over three years to ramp up production.
Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Company may not be a household name, but with a market value of over $550 billion, it’s one of the world’s 10 most valuable companies. Now, it’s leveraging its considerable resources to bring the world’s most advanced chip manufacturing back to U.S. soil.
CNBC got an exclusive tour of the $12 billion fabrication plant, or fab, in Phoenix, Arizona, where TSMC will start making 5-nanometer chips in 2024. The company says it will produce 20,000 wafers each month.
“These are parts that are going to be used in lots of different places: CPUs, GPUs, IPUs, etc. They’ll be used in smartphones,” Rick Cassidy told CNBC. Cassidy is TSMC’s chief strategy officer and the president and CEO of TSMC’s project in Arizona.
TSMC makes key components for everything from cellphones to F-35 fighter jets to NASA’s Perseverance Rover mission to Mars. Earlier this month, it announced plans for a new factory in Japan, where it will produce chips with older technologies, for things like household devices and certain car components. TSMC is also Apple’s exclusive provider of the most advanced chips inside every iPhone currently on the market and most Mac computers.
“But they remain sort of in the background, in terms of end markets. So Apple gets all the accolades when a new phone comes out,” said Joanne Itow, managing director of manufacturing at Semico Research.
“We’re low-key. We let our products speak for themselves. Their success brings all the business that we could ever hope for,” Cassidy said.
The U.S. was the birthplace of advanced silicon, but for decades now, it’s been losing market share to Asia, where 79% of the world’s chip production happened in 2020, according to industry association SEMI. It calculated the U.S. was responsible for 12% of worldwide chip manufacturing last year, down from 37% in 1990.
TSMC alone was responsible for 24% of the world’s semiconductor output in 2020, up from 21% in 2019, according to the company. When it comes to the most advanced chips used in the latest iPhones, supercomputers and automotive AI, TSMC is responsible for 92% of production while Samsung is responsible for the other 8%, according to research group Capital Economics.
“It’s become almost a monopoly at the leading edge, and all of those manufacturing operations, for the most part, are out of Taiwan, Hsinchu. That becomes a matter of national importance for the United States, but not only the United States, but the Western world,” said Christopher Rolland, Susquehanna’s senior semiconductor analyst.
Along with cutting edge 3- and 5-nanometer chips, TSMC also makes larger chips for products such as electric toothbrushes and coffeemakers. Cars often use less-advanced 28- to 40-nanometer chips. All types of chips have been impacted by the shortage. Carmakers including GM and Toyota have paused production at some plants. And Apple is likely to slash its 2021 production targets for the iPhone 13, with orders for some models delayed by more than a month.

CNBC Marathon got an exclusive look at how the world makes the now all important processing chips at ASML, TSMC and Intel.
Tour inside ASML’s cleanrooms to see how these $200 million EUV systems print minuscule designs on advanced microchips using exploding molten tin, the flattest surface in the world, and light so narrow it’s absorbed by air.
And for decades, Intel was the leading maker of the world’s most advanced chips. Intel’s history is interwoven with that of Silicon Valley, credited with the invention of RAM and microprocessors, the building blocks of modern computing. Now Intel has fallen behind. But its new CEO, Pat Gelsinger, has a bold plan to catch up to Samsung and TSMC by 2025, by building new chip fabrication plants in the U.S., Europe and Israel totaling more than $44 billion. CNBC got an exclusive tour at the fab expansion outside Portland, Oregon, that’s set to open early next year.
CNBC Marathon brings together the best of CNBC’s chip coverage and examines how this competitive, lucrative and vital industry is changing.

How ASML, TSMC And Intel Dominate The Chip Market | CNBC Marathon
https://wn.com/How_Asml,_Tsmc_And_Intel_Dominate_The_Chip_Market_|_Cnbc_Marathon
Chapters:
00:00 Introduction
00:39 Inside ASML, the company that all advanced chipmakers rely on (Published Mar. 2022)
19:10 Exclusive look inside the secretive Taiwan chip giant TSMC (Published Oct. 2021)
36:47 Inside Intel’s bold $26 billion U.S. plan to regain chip dominance (Published Nov. 2021)

Renowned romance novelist Chiung Yao has passed away at the age of 86. The author was found dead in her Tamsui residence on Tuesday afternoon, where she had taken her own life. Over the course of her decades-long career, the writer touched the lives of countless readers in the Chinese-speaking world, as well as dozens of actors that starred in the TV adaptations of her works. Fans and friends have taken to social media to share their memories with Chiung Yao and bid her farewell.

This is my final decision. My time has come and life will not get better than it is.
Smiling at the cameras, famed author Chiung Yao records her final public message. On Dec. 4, the writer was found dead in her residence in New Taipei’s Tamsui District, where she had taken her life. Her passing came as a shock to many.
Kao Chin Su-mei
Lawmaker (Independent)
Chiung Yao was the creator of the first dramas that Taiwan co-produced with China, “Four Loves” and “Three Flowers.” I have been very lucky to have worked with her and her husband, I’m thankful for the opportunities they gave me and I hope they are both happy together on the other side.
Many artists have mourned Chiung Yao’s death on social media, including Chinese actor Zhao Wei and Taiwanese actors Ruby Lin and Alec Su, all of whom who rose to fame after starring in “My Fair Princess.” Taiwanese actor Brigitte Lin says she will always remember her as a strong woman.
Chang Man-chuan
Author
The news of her passing came at 1:22 p.m. Her husband’s lucky number was 22, so I think it’s a sign of the loving connection they had.
Police responded to Chiung Yao’s suicide at 1:22 in the afternoon, a number that author Chang Man-chuan says is symbolic for its ties to Chiung Yao’s late husband Ping Hsin-tao. Through their lives, the husband-and-wife duo established Crown Culture Corporation, a publishing house that worked with renowned writers such as Eileen Chang, Sanmao and Amy Cheung. Many of their works were adapted to television, starring more than 100 famous actors. In addition, Chiung Yao owned three film and television companies, with a value of some NT$3 billion.
Chiung Yao’s body has been taken to the Second Funeral Parlor in Taipei, and is due to be incinerated on Friday. She decided to not hold a public farewell ceremony, making for a quiet and tranquil end for the literary icon.

Hey, I’m Sonny! I’m from the US but I’ve been living in Asia for 10 years and started making food and travel videos to document my experiences. I travel to different parts of the world, hunting down and documenting the most unique food each country has to offer.
If you see any factual food errors in my videos, please feel free to politely let me know in the comments. I'm a huge fan of trying different, interesting foods in each country. My show is from a Western point of view, but more importantly, MY point of view. It is not meant to offend any person or culture.

Is Taiwan a Country or Part of China?
A look at the complex political situation on the island of Taiwan. The island of Taiwan is administered by the Republic of China, which lost the Chinese Civil War to the Communists which control the mainland to this day, proclaiming the People's Republic of China in 1949.
Both the ROC and the PRC claim to be the legitimate government of China. Taiwan is a de facto independent country but is not a member of the United Nations since being replaced in 1971 by the PRC.
The current situation is stuck in a stalemate with the two ways of resolving the dispute (unification and independence) both seeming very unlikely to happen any time soon.

Newest version of China’s Apple Maps shows ‘Taiwan Province’ over island of Taiwan|Taiwan News
An updated version of Apple Maps didn’t get much fanfare than usual in Taiwan, but across the Strait, Weibo’s top search result: Taiwan Province, became a hot topic. A peek inside China’s new version of Apple Maps shows what the commotion is all about: the words Taiwan Province are written over the island of Taiwan. And member of the public on both sides of the Strait were more than happy to share their views on this contentious issue.
On February 27, Weibo’s top search rankings had over three million results for a familiar yet controversial name: Taiwan Province. This contentious name’s rise to number one on the charts caught Taiwanese off-guard. A look inside the iPhone’s recently updated Apple Maps for China’s market shows what the fuss is all about: “Taiwan Province” is written over ...

Shark Fishery Images from Taiwan, Province of China Underline Global Threat | Pew
New images from a fishing port in Taiwan, Province of China underline the threat to sharks around the world. Fishermen kill up to 73 million sharks annually in order to satisfy the demand for shark fin soup. While the scale of the trade in Taiwan, Province of China is massive, globally it is just the fourth largest fisher of sharks, after Indonesia, India and Spain.

John Cena apologises for saying Taiwan is a country amid backlash
The Fast & Furious star and wrestler John Cena has apologised for calling Taiwan ‘a country’ in an interview he gave to a Taiwanese broadcaster this month.
Subscribe to Guardian News on YouTube ► http://bit.ly/guardianwiressub
‘I made a mistake. I love and respect Chinese people,’ Cena said to his 600,000 fans on his Chinese Weibo account. The controversy began when he told the Taiwanese broadcaster TVBS in Mandarin ‘Taiwan is the first country that can watch’ his latest film, Fast & Furious 9. China sees Taiwan as a part of its own territory, and rejects any reference to the self-governed island as an independent state.

Taiwan Province
Taiwan Province is one of the two administrative divisions of the Republic of China that are officially referred to as "provinces". The province covers approximately 69% of the actual-controlled territory of the ROC, with around 31% of the total population.
Geographically it covers the majority of the island of Taiwan as well as almost all of its surrounding islands, the largest of which are the Penghu archipelago, Green Island, Xiaoliuqiu Island and Orchid Island. Taiwan Province does not cover territories of the special municipalities of Kaohsiung, New Taipei, Taichung, Tainan, Taipei, and Taoyuan, all of which are located geographically within the main island of Taiwan. It also does not include the counties of Kinmen and Lienchiang, which are located alongside the southeast coast of mai...

Taiwan forces Qatar to remove Chinese province reference on FIFA World Cup identification card
Taiwan objected strongly to Qatar's move after it listed as a 'province of China' in an online application form ahead of this year's FIFA World Cup and forced it rectify the 'error'. This after the dropdown menu on the website to apply for Hayya card had showed 'Taiwan, Province of China'. The listing had angered Taiwanese officials who then requested organisers to change the name to 'Taiwan' following which Qatar rectified the 'error'. Watch this video to know more.

I think this is just them getting excited over nothing. In the real world, it’s a simple matter that we don’t belong to them.
Member of public
Over there they have their own political reasons, so we can’t be too demanding because we don’t have any control over what they do.
Compared to flabbergasted Taiwanese, many Chinese internet users were so excited about the change that they posted comments online. One said the name should’ve been like this all along while another was happy to announce that the maps of AutoNavi Software and Baidu were updated to show Taiwan Province as well. But then some Chinese netizens took a self-mocking approach. One user pointed out that Apple is surely clever enough to have two different names for Taiwan: one within the Great Firewall and one outside of it. And another user reminded readers that in the virtual world he used to falsely claim that an entertainment star he had a crush on was his girlfriend. So, he believes Chinese are essentially lying to themselves.
Hong Kong citizen
At the end of the day China’s market is quite big, with many people having their investments there and people are doing business in China. So, sometimes you have no choice but to do what they want to do.
The data for Apple Maps is primarily provided by Dutch location technology company TomTom. But China’s government policy has put restrictions into place, which has resulted in Apple Maps having two data suppliers in the Chinese market: China’s own AutoNavi Software and Hong Kong’s MapKing. But in other countries Apple Maps still shows Taiwan, without the word “Province” alongside it. It seems that even in map software, there seems to be “one Taiwan with respective interpretations.”

It also does not include the counties of Kinmen and Lienchiang, which are located alongside the southeast coast of mainland China and administered as a separate Fujian Province.
