The 1908 London Olympics
A specially compiled selection of extracts from surviving footage of Track & Field and Marathon events during London's first ever stint as host city.
The 1908 Olympics had been awarded to Rome, but due to the eruption of Mount Vesuvius in April 1906 London was selected as an alternative. Twenty-two nations competed in 110 events, opening on 27th April and closing on 31st October.
Track & Field events, held at the specially built White City stadium, were captured in the first part of this film, which illustrates the multitude of sports taking place simultaneously: archery, shot putt, high jump and discus alongside tug-of-war, gymnastics, swimming and water polo, with the cyclists sweeping past on the track in the background.

Controversy at London's 1908 Olympics
If you think controversy at the Olympics is a modern phenomena, the 1908 Games will make you think again. Rows over rules were rife, and the so-called 'British sense of fair play' was conspicuous by its absence.
But along with the scandal, 1908 produced a truly memorable marathon and set the standard for future Olympics.

The 1908 Olympic marathon took place in sweltering heat, leading to one of the most dramatic race finishes in the history of the Games. Race leader Dorando Pietri, struggling to stay on his feet as he neared the finish line, was famously disqualified for the assistance he received. This marathon would prove significant for another reason, as the distance from Windsor Castle to White City - 26 miles and 385 yards - would be adopted as the standard race length from 1924. At the 1908 Olympics in London, Italian Dorando Pietri was leading the field in the marathon before he collapsed from exhaustion in the final metres. He received assistance from officials and was able to cross the finish line in first place . However, after a protest from second placed Johnny Hayes, he was later disqualified and the gold went to the American. Nevertheless, Pietri subsequently became an international celebrity, with Queen Alexandra awarding him a gilded silver cup for his efforts.

The 1908 Summer Olympics, officially the Games of the IV Olympiad, were an international multi-sport event which was held in 1908 in London, United Kingdom, from 27 April to 31 October 1908.
These games were originally scheduled to be held in Rome, but relocation on financial grounds followed a disastrous eruption of Mount Vesuvius in 1906. Rome eventually hosted the 1960 Summer Olympics. They were the fourth chronological modern Summer Olympics in keeping with the now-accepted four-year cycle as opposed to the alternate four-year cycle of the proposed Intercalated Games. The IOC president for these Games was Baron Pierre de Coubertin. Lasting a total of 187 days, or 6 months and 4 days, these games were the longest in modern Olympics history; since 1988, the Games have ordinarily lasted 17 days.
