Geneva Summit could refer to either of two Cold War-era meetings held thirty years apart in Geneva, Switzerland:
The Geneva Summit (1955) was held on July 18, 1955, and was a meeting of "The Big Four": President Dwight D. Eisenhower of the United States, Prime Minister Anthony Eden of Britain, Premier Nikolai A. Bulganin of the Soviet Union, and Prime Minister Edgar Faure of France
The Geneva Summit (1985) was on November 19, 1985, between U.S. president Ronald Reagan and Soviet premier Mikhail Gorbachev
The purpose was to bring together world leaders to begin discussions on peace. Although those discussions led down many different roads (arms negotiations, trade barriers, diplomacy, nuclear warfare, etc.), the talks were influenced by the common goal for increased global security.
The mission
The stated mission of the 1955 summit was to reduce international tensions. The Geneva Summit was seen as an extremely important building block to better friendships and more open communication between the leaders of "The Big Four". The creation of an international community was introduced as a way to help relieve global tensions and mistrust. This community would form the critical foundation of a unified world in which minimal barriers to trade and common interests would serve to engender diplomacy.
The Geneva Summit of 1985 was a Cold War-era meeting in Geneva, Switzerland. It was held on November 19 and 20, 1985, between U.S. President Ronald Reagan and Soviet General Secretary Mikhail Gorbachev. The two leaders met for the first time to hold talks on international diplomatic relations and the arms race.
Run-up to the summit
Both the Soviet Union and the United States were seeking to cut the number of nuclear weapons, with the Soviets seeking to halve the number of nuclear-equipped bombers and missiles, and the U.S. desiring to ensure that neither side gained a first-strike advantage, and to protect rights to have defensive systems. Diplomats struggled to come up with planned results in advance, with Soviets rejecting the vast majority of the items that U.S. negotiators proposed. With the meeting planned months in advance, the two superpowers used the opportunity to posture and to stake their positions in the court of public opinion. Reagan's security advisor Robert McFarlane announced that they were having "real trouble establishing a dialogue" with the Soviets, and announced a first test for the Strategic Defense Initiative missile defense. The Soviets announced a unilateral moratorium on underground nuclear tests and invited the Americans to join them, a request that was rebuffed.
Swiss Italian (Italian:svizzero italiano) is the name used for the variety of the Italian language spoken in the Italian-speaking area of Switzerland. Swiss Italian is spoken as natively by about 350,000 people in the canton of Ticino and in the southern part of Graubünden (Canton Grigioni). Swiss-Italian also refers to the Italian speaking population in this region (southern Switzerland) close to the border with Italy. Swiss Italian dialects are spoken in emigrant communities around the world, including in Australia.
Spoken in Ticino is also the Ticinese, a comprehensive name for the dialects of Western Lombard spoken in the same area of Switzerland.
Characteristics
Despite being like standard Italian, Italian spoken in the Italian-speaking region of Switzerland presents some regional differences from the Italian spoken in other regions of Italy due to the presence of French and German from which it forms calques. An example would be the words for driving licence: in Italian it is called a patente di guida while in Swiss Italian it becomes licenza di condurre, from the French permis de conduire. Another example is the interurban bus: In Italian it would be autobus or corriera while in Switzerland it is the Autopostale or posta (because nearly all interurban lines are run by a subsidiary of the Swiss Post).
The number of Swiss nationals has grown from 1.7 million in 1815 to 6.76 million in 2009, 90% of them living in Switzerland. About 60% of those living abroad reside in the European Union (423,300); the largest group of Swiss descendants outside of Europe is in Canada (146,830).

19th November 1985: Reagan and Gorbachev meet for the first time at the Geneva Summit
The 54 year old Gorbachev had been elected on 11 March, and quickly began to address the economic, social, and political problems facing the USSR. In terms of foreign policy, his ‘new thinking’ doctrine moved away from adopting nuclear deterrence and the accumulation of nuclear weapons and instead sought common security. This would demand cooperation with the United States in order to bring about bilateral reduction of nuclear arms.
Meanwhile Ronald Reagan, who had served as President of the United States since 1981, referred to the USSR as the ‘evil empire’. Despite adopting a hard line against the Soviet Union, he similarly sought to end the nuclear arms race albeit by the development of the Strategic Defense Initiative (also referred to as “Star Wars”) that would make a first-strike ad...

Despite adopting a hard line against the Soviet Union, he similarly sought to end the nuclear arms race albeit by the development of the Strategic Defense Initiative (also referred to as “Star Wars”) that would make a first-strike advantage impossible and render nuclear weapons obsolete.
Since both countries wished to reduce their nuclear stockpiles, arrangements were made for a summit conference in Geneva. The first meeting took place on 19 November and, over the course of the next two days, Reagan and Gorbachev spoke at length about nuclear arms reduction and other issues of international diplomacy. Although the two leaders achieved little in terms of formal agreements, they developed a personal connection that led to further meetings over the next two years.
These summits eventually led to the negotiation of the Intermediate-Range Nuclear Forces Treaty. Signed in Washington D.C. on 8 December 1987, the INF eliminated an entire class of nuclear weapons.
Despite adopting a hard line against the Soviet Union, he similarly sought to end the nuclear arms race albeit by the development of the Strategic Defense Initiative (also referred to as “Star Wars”) that would make a first-strike advantage impossible and render nuclear weapons obsolete.

US President Joe Biden and Russian President Vladimir Putin hold a meeting at Parc 'La Grange' villa in Geneva on Wednesday.
The two leaders are set to meet for crunch talks for the first time since Biden was sworn in as president in January.
The pair are expected to talk about US concerns on Russian sabre-rattling on the Ukrainian border, the imprisonment of Kremlin opponent Alexei Navalny, and Putin's support for Belarusian strongman Alexander Lukashenko.
Washington has repeatedly accused Russia of interfering in the 2016 and 2020 US elections.
Earlier this year, Biden blacklisted six Russian technology companies for "carrying out Russian government-directed attempts to influence the 2020 US presidential election, and other acts of disinformation and interference."
However, Putin called for the US and Russia to work together to fight cyberattacks, saying: "It is our great hope that we will be able to set up this process with our US partners."
SCHEDULE:
0827GMT - View of the Parc 'La Grange' villa in Geneva.
TIME TBC - Arrivals
TIME TBC - Meeting
TIME TBC - Putin news conference
TIME TBC - Biden news conference
TIME TBC - Swiss President Parmelin and FM Cassis news conference

This excellent Cold War documentary by Professor David Reynolds examines the fascinating interaction between Ronald Reagan and Mikhail Gorbachev.

Are we sleeping in the shadows of life? Is a past of shady photographs a past of lies? The sun that rise to kiss the skies... What I wouldn't give to see it with new eyes And then what? Standing at the summit of a hill When the mountain is the thrill Makes me so sad... Cold and dark, forgetting what it feels like, to hold and to be held But she can't hide emotions, her tears are never far away She is hammered by a legacy, long since dead Thinks the monster won't return once it's been fed And then what? When the mountain is a hill Once you're drained of all your skill You fly away? You left us here to remember The scented touch of love Drunk and disillusioned I stand before you now I can't take this world for what it is There's nothing left to find Friends and lovers, are you all
